Your story, your voice, your work, but mostly… your love and enthusiasm for the microcosmos all made me fall in love with it too. Mesmerizing! Thank you.
Thank you James and Hank for reawakening childlike wonder in this 68 year old. I got my first microscope as a teen, and I've had a few off and on, then life kind of took over and the unseen world took a back seat. That, is about to change, given my new scope should be arriving any day now. Keep inspiring and bringing us joy!!
I am 33 years old builder. I discovered yor channel 3-4 days ago and I passionately fell in love with your work. Now I am searching on the internet where to go to study microscopy/ microbiology 😊 Best regards from Russia ! May the science bring us all together!
What an absolute joy to hear James' lovely voice, telling the story of his love affair with microscopy in his own words. Thank you for all your brilliant work, James, we're so glad you and Hank connected and created this amazingfantasticbrilliant channel.
Poop is life, just ask a gardener. But pondwater is even more magic, full of sunlight and photosyntesis and the animals who eat and mate. I love these videos you people make. Thank you.
James you have changed my life. You’re my hero. I have been watching Journey to the Microcosmos for a while, maybe three years. In all that time I wanted to get a microscope but I didn’t know what to get. My husband got me one for our 16th anniversary and it’s been the greatest gift of my life. I cannot tell you how many hours our whole family spends together, getting samples, and watching the footage. How hard we research organisms to find out what they are. I’ve spent the last three weeks trying to identify a prehistoric looking Tardigrade with what looks like tusks. We went hiking during a heatwave to collect samples, seriously. We climbed a waterfall together to find out what diatoms were up there. We explore together. We science together lol thank you so much. You’ve changed our lives, truly James and Hank. My four year old can tell you all about microbes and where to find them. It’s just amazing.
@@JamsGerms I think it was a Echiniscus testudo, again not sure. It took a long time to figure it out. It’s really hard to identify tardigrades! The little guy is so beautiful and unique. I found him on some lichen on an old oak tree in my Mom’s front yard. I thought about sending you the footage because I’d never seen one like that before. As it turns out the lichen and Moss on that tree are full of different tardigrades and a lot more. Thank you so much for replying. I am honored, truly! I’m so glad you saw my message. I had some happy tears when I saw you replied. Are you going to write another book soon? I’ll be first in line to pick it up. I’d love to read more of your research.
When I was 12, I found out about microscopes. I started saving the $5 i got a week for school lunch and after about half a year of hungry afternoons (unbeknownst to my parents) I got a microscope from the second hand store which had a dozen old highschool microscopes. My parents stopped giving me school lunch money after they found out I wasn't using it for food, but it didn't matter cause I'd already won >:-) First thing I wanted to look at was live blood, but I was too scared to get a sample from myself lol. I instead looked at a dead spider, and was blown away by the tiny mites on its hairs. Bugs on bugs?? Bugs²!!! My mom later cut her finger on accident and the first thing i did was excitedly exclaim "GIVE ME YOUR BLOOD!!" I still have my old slides, and I look at all kinds of cool things in the lab I work in :-)
I'm loving this channel. It's fascinating and has me captivated. In college I signed up for microbiology... I got only 3 weeks into classes and had to go on bedrest for the remainder of my pregnancy. I had always planned to go back to college later, but having a special needs child, I chose to stay home to care for him myself. Seeing this channel helps fill my curiosity. Thank you for your awesome videos. ❤
Seeing someone progress and improve their skills is such a wonderful feeling. In the 15+ years I've been a citizen of the internet, I've seen digital artists start from humble beginnings, hone their craft, and develop into amazing masters. When I find established content creators I like, I often go back through their old work to properly appreciate how they've improved over time, and if they've changed anything about their style.
This is a wonderful description of the fact that one person’s passion can produce great things. James’ microscopy is really unprecedented in its high quality.
I'm so glad to finally get to hear James on here. Truly an unexpected origin story but I'm sure thankful for it. His microscope footage has given me a whole new appreciation for the microcosmos. I had never seen such clear and high resolution videos of microbes before. To be able to make out the rippled texture on a Stentor was something I just didn't even know was possible. So thank you James, and everyone else at JttM for helping me revel in the wonders of the very small.
I'm majoring in fisheries engineering and have recently discovered this fascinating world. I currently work with rotifers and microalgae, but your channel keeps me excited about the endless research possibilities. Thank you Master James and thank you to everyone who is part of this community.
You guys are my favorite TH-cam channel for sure. Such amazing videos and great views and perspectives of the world we live with every day but usually never get to see.
It's delightful to hear directly from James. It's hard to believe this channel has been around for so long; in my mind it's still "Hank's new project where he gets to channel his meditative side, and also how does Hank have time for yet another new project?"
I am so impressed with the chaos and beauty of your world, James. All those tiny beings moving around with a purpose only they can understand. Your work brings a measure of order and understanding out of the chaos. We advance, a little study at a time, one after the other...
This was a wonderful insight into the beginnings of this channel! I for one am deeply grateful for James' love of microscopy and his willingness to share so much of his treasured images with us. This has been a wondrous journey from the very first video, and I feel rather privileged to have been along for the ride so far! Thank you, James!! And thank you, Hank, and all the rest of the Journey team!!!
I remember when I saw my first video from this channel nearly 2 years ago, and I think I watched at least another 10 in a row. At a certain age I think you become wise when you realise just how little you actually know about the universe, then you see one of these videos and become bewildered, and yet enlightened at just how much you will never know, but will never be short of exploration. It's not just microbes under a microscope slide on video, there's philosophy, art, meditation, engagement, humour and of course science. Thank you James, Hank and other contributors for these truly wonderful films ☮❤
On topic, I got my first microscope when I was 9, in 1989. It was £50 which was not cheap back then, and it had a rotational block of 3 differing zoom levels. Of course the first thing I did was go straight to the highest zoom and try to focus the glass slide, until I heard the cracking noise of the lens as I crushed it onto the slide 😂😭 It also had an ability to take film photos with an attachment, but absolutely no instructions on how to take an image! Never did figure it out and didn't really ever get back into it from those failures. If I had these videos back then, maybe I would have persisted to be a microbiologist by now....
You have always been an inspiration James, thank you for sharing your story with the world, I've read your story on Instagram as well and you are such a strong and wonderful person. You deserve all the success and love in the world.
This is one of the best channels. Thank you so much to James, Hank, and everyone on the Journey to the Microcosmos team. I first found this channel because I wanted to learn more about gastrotrichs and so I did a search and found that this channel had a great vid about them. That's usually how I find good science channels, by doing a search for something that I am wondering about. I was surprised when I found out that Hank does the narration because he sounds so chill compared to when he did crash course. Thanks again for everything.
Thank you for this wonderful video reflecting on James' life and his journey to the microcosmos. Well done! And nice to hear your voice, James as you relate part of your story.
I really enjoyed seeing this footage and learning about James' beginnings. Seemed to legitimize my own journey and that of my two young sons with whom I share my passion for discovery. Keep up the good energy.
As someone that has become a collaborator with a PhD student I can say this as advice: keep sharing what you find is interesting with academics. It might take days, weeks, months, but eventually you’ll find someone that you can ‘vibe’ with and share your expertise.
this is my confort channel , i leave the new video late at night to watch in the dark with hank smooth naration voice, thank you and can't wait for more
I got a microscope on my birthday last year - and only got to set it up for the first time two days ago. Since then, my dad and I went out to get water from nearby to check it out - and it was love at first sight for me, too! It's so amazing. It's like peering into another world. I don't have a very close-up professional microscope, but it's still so amazing to see everything.
James, You❤ inspired me to buy a microscope after I found my 60 year old microscope in a closet with its focus machinery literally worn out. I had loved it as a child, but had forgotten the sense of wonder and awe looking at ciliates brings. There is nothing on TV that can compete with the visual and intellectual excitement contained in a few jam jars of pond water! Thank you. Your book is a work of art!
Muchas gracias.
I hope that this channel allows you receive the funds to do independent research. I'm doubting that studying microscopic life is a goal at many universities, simply because it hasn't been researched enough. Kepp up the great work James, I sincerely hope through the power of this channel and your co owners, you can receive a big grant of cash/equipment to further your research.
Awesome to hear from James! If only the wavelength of visible light could be made shorter! :-(. Although I can imagine this would kill everything on our finely balanced plabet/ universe.
Much of the magic occurs when you 1st realize it's down to light moving into Mk. 1 eyeballs. Whether it's a microscope or telescope, no one can fake what you are seeing, and suddenly the universe becomes very real.
Do microbes behave differently when in the flatness of a slide compared to their natural habitat? Seeing as microscopes and their limitation of field of focus due to the nature of a lens (hence the need for slides to reduce the field of focus), it means changing part of the world that these creatures live in. I've always been curious about this notion
How do u identify which microbe is which one ? I mean if you take sample from a puddle , you will get a lot of amoeba and microbes. So how would uk which one is which one ?
It would be cool if we found a microbe that can communicate by responding to taps or blinking lights. Maybe it wiggles it's tale in a pattern and we go "eureka, it's way smarter than we thought!"
Nice i got into microscopes when i was very young i asked for microscopes for xmas and my birth day but i only got crappy toy microscopes. i had a really strange one with a black and white crt screen instead of a normal view finder .it was from the late 90s or the year 2000 why was it still black and white? and wouldn't a normal microscope be cheaper anyway? it had 40X zoom could be worse.
Ugghhhhh I want a microscope so bad but electricity SUMMER RATES. Had to postpone buying it like over a month now. New goal is buying it before October lol

It was exciting to hear your origin story. Your work speaks for itself but it is nice to put a voice to it.
Why don't you put anything on your other sites?? I look every here and there but never see anything new on them
thankyou for sharing, it is so important
You're so cool dude. Since I found this channel in highschool I have desperately wanted a microscope to have my own journeys aswell. ❤

Keep up the good energy.
Utterly, mesmerizingly fascinating stuff!
Thanks for sharing James' story. I like to hear about behind the scenes and what people go through to create this content.

Great video, very nice to get more personal with you all. Wish that you guys still get the views, you all certainly deserve it.

Always excited to see a new video!
Thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge! 🙏🙏🙏
Kudos, James. Thank you for your insights.
Love you James! Beautiful images!
I was trying to remember the name of the creator of Dinotopia yesterday and this thumbnail helped me remember! James Gurney.
Would love to see a video about food borne pathogens
A6what does botulinum look like? Salmonella? Lysteriosis bacteria?
Fascinating stuff thanks for sharing your journey of discovery
I have ALWAYS love Science. Microbiology, Microscopy and everything that's invisible to the naked eye.
Thanks so much for sharing your story🔬🦠💚
I'm considering buying the microscope soon. Thank you for making me fascinated.
Thank you James!!!🥰

Just a suggestion, but try reaching out to linus (ltt) and wendell (level1techs) for a collab on building a storage server for the footage.
it's nice to hear james get a speaking role on the main show

What is the model of the phase condenser? What is the model of the microscope? Etc etc? We need detailed information please. Thanks

Would you mind telling me where do you get your information about microbes as I am interested in starting this channel
I hope to land in this field for a career, so unique and interresting❤
Hola, saludos
¿Por favor, podrías recomendarme un microscopio para para practicar esta actividad?
Gracias
hat's off!
finally the master himself
It would be cool if we found a microbe that can communicate by responding to taps or blinking lights. Maybe it wiggles it's tale in a pattern and we go "eureka, it's way smarter than we thought!"
thats amazing my husband got a microscope too for sexing tarantula molts, but its possible we could also view other microscopic creatures with it
James lives in Poland? Did I understand that right?
Nice i got into microscopes when i was very young i asked for microscopes for xmas and my birth day but i only got crappy toy microscopes. i had a really strange one with a black and white crt screen instead of a normal view finder .it was from the late 90s or the year 2000 why was it still black and white? and wouldn't a normal microscope be cheaper anyway? it had 40X zoom could be worse.
MOAR PURPLE AMOEBA PLEASE 🙏😊
Please please make an EU (Irish!) Microscope available on your website - I'm a biologist and I would love to buy one🔬
Ugghhhhh I want a microscope so bad but electricity SUMMER RATES. Had to postpone buying it like over a month now. New goal is buying it before October lol
OMG IS THAT JAMES ACTUALLY TALKING IN A VIDEO?!?!? AND YOU ACTUALLY LINKED HIS TH-cam CHANNEL IN THE DESCRIPTION?!??!??!!
5000 hours of footage?
Those rotifers have almost vacuums for mouths and 2 red psudeoeyes! Or something like that. I dont know. That was bugged out.
Thanks you!!n
Please help with the VR Microcosmos game.
We need to get a chance for the master of microscopes James awards for the players who can conquer the most.
He sounds a lot like a friend called James and now im curious 😅
9:15 Can't fool me, that's a naedocyte breeder!
The stark contrast between videos like that and the NPC streamer thing going on right now...
We'll information 😅
Missed the nice voice
So what do you do ?? What exactly warrants your 50 % of the channels ownership ??
Honestly seems like you guys put more effort into slow paced narration than education these days, your videos have become less information dense.
I just don't know why, but you guys apparently thought that was a good idea to put a talking robot in your videos in my language. I just can't watch the video like this. How can I turn it off? I want the real narrator of the video. I love this channel, I love James, but I can't listen him !!!!
