My take away: This was a master class in confronting a narcissist. Don't go into it expecting to get anything out of THEM. Go into the argument with a goal that can be accomplished without requiring the narcissist to acknowledge or recognize the accomplishment. It takes away their ability to feel powerful by depriving you of any approval they think you might be looking for, and it exposes how powerless they really are. Go in with a goal you can fulfill single handedly without "needing" their contribution; Allow them the opportunity to represent themselves as a person, but be firm on what you are there to accomplish for YOURSELF as a separate person who has a life detached and outside of any relationship with the narcissist. That way, you retain the power to leave any time having taken what you came to get out of the situation, and they are left trying to trap you with points that you will never actually be emotionally invested in because you are not looking for any outcome that relies on approval or recognition from the narcissist. Anything they say will stand alone to represent themselves, because they can't control the script how they usually do by derailing you with disingenuous jabs to make you emotionally invested in their reactions and responses and therefore they can't gaslight the conversation after or do damage control. Don't go in trying to 'win', go in with an intention that will be fulfilling and productive for your life without attaching you to any external expectation for mutual closure. Its every dog for themselves in the ring with a narcissistic. They watch and see what you really care about and will try to use it to trap you into a state of mind where you are responding to them so much that you can't control the direction of the interaction. Even caring about each other will show a weakness they can tap into and turn people against each other and away from themselves. Deflection. Confession through projection. Simply brilliant. I'm an ex Def fan btw, from back before the creepshow art drama hit and the tea community imploded on itself.
My one and only issue with how gut handled this is that people who don't have any context, might get the wrong take away from this convo. If you didn't watch the first convo these two had, it comes off as if gut is being unnecessarily hard on def, not letting him speak, and constantly talking over him - but its because this is the only way to handle noodles. Its is really satisfying to see def get called out on his bullsh!t (the main reason why it was so frustrating to listen to the first convo - Gut let Dennis get away with a lot) but it mightve been better, optically speaking, to just not engage. Theres just no winning with people like this
I never understood ideas like "how to hurt a narcissist" or "how to win against a narcissist". It's like, they're already hurting, that's *why* they're a narcissist. My thought was like, if you have to treat a conversation like a battle where you're going to get nothing out of it, then it's not worth your time. It's just going to upset either you or them. Exactly! I’ve watched Dennis for a long while, and similarly Papa. I would watch Dennis every morning with the husband as a silly catch-up, and even my husband listening as I watched last night, said this is just sad. My take away:
This was a master class in confronting a narcissist.
Don't go into it expecting to get anything out of THEM. Go into the argument with a goal that can be accomplished without requiring the narcissist to acknowledge or recognize the accomplishment. It takes away their ability to feel powerful by depriving you of any approval they think you might be looking for, and it exposes how powerless they really are. Go in with a goal you can fulfill single handedly without "needing" their contribution; Allow them the opportunity to represent themselves as a person, but be firm on what you are there to accomplish for YOURSELF as a separate person who has a life detached and outside of any relationship with the narcissist. That way, you retain the power to leave any time having taken what you came to get out of the situation, and they are left trying to trap you with points that you will never actually be emotionally invested in because you are not looking for any outcome that relies on approval or recognition from the narcissist. Anything they say will stand alone to represent themselves, because they can't control the script how they usually do by derailing you with disingenuous jabs to make you emotionally invested in their reactions and responses and therefore they can't gaslight the conversation after or do damage control.
Don't go in trying to 'win', go in with an intention that will be fulfilling and productive for your life without attaching you to any external expectation for mutual closure. Its every dog for themselves in the ring with a narcissistic. They watch and see what you really care about and will try to use it to trap you into a state of mind where you are responding to them so much that you can't control the direction of the interaction. Even caring about each other will show a weakness they can tap into and turn people against each other and away from themselves. Deflection. Confession through projection.

My one and only issue with how gut handled this is that people who don't have any context, might get the wrong take away from this convo. If you didn't watch the first convo these two had, it comes off as if gut is being unnecessarily hard on def, not letting him speak, and constantly talking over him - but its because this is the only way to handle noodles. Its is really satisfying to see def get called out on his bullsh!t (the main reason why it was so frustrating to listen to the first convo - Gut let Dennis get away with a lot) but it mightve been better, optically speaking, to just not engage. Theres just no winning with people like this
I never understood ideas like "how to hurt a narcissist" or "how to win against a narcissist". It's like, they're already hurting, that's *why* they're a narcissist.

If you have been in any type of abusive relationship where you never felt like you could communicate your feelings or problems, you know this all too well. It was difficult to listen to without remembering these exact types of conversations I have had with previous partners. There isn't changing a person that cannot acknowledge that they're the problem. Therapy is only useful if one is willing to hold themselves accountable.

My take away:
Don't go into it expecting to get anything out of THEM. Go into the argument with a goal that can be accomplished without requiring the narcissist to acknowledge or recognize the accomplishment. It takes away their ability to feel powerful by depriving you of any approval they think you might be looking for, and it exposes how powerless they really are. Go in with a goal you can fulfill single handedly without "needing" their contribution; Allow them the opportunity to represent themselves as a person, but be firm on what you are there to accomplish for YOURSELF as a separate person who has a life detached and outside of any relationship with the narcissist. That way, you retain the power to leave any time having taken what you came to get out of the situation, and they are left trying to trap you with points that you will never actually be emotionally invested in because you are not looking for any outcome that relies on approval or recognition from the narcissist. Anything they say will stand alone to represent themselves, because they can't control the script how they usually do by derailing you with disingenuous jabs to make you emotionally invested in their reactions and responses and therefore they can't gaslight the conversation after or do damage control.
Don't go in trying to 'win', go in with an intention that will be fulfilling and productive for your life without attaching you to any external expectation for mutual closure. Its every dog for themselves in the ring with a narcissistic. They watch and see what you really care about and will try to use it to trap you into a state of mind where you are responding to them so much that you can't control the direction of the interaction. Even caring about each other will show a weakness they can tap into and turn people against each other and away from themselves. Deflection. Confession through projection.

Def very specifically did not apologize for the joke involving Mama Gut's history. Listening to him insist he did is mind numbing and insane, particularly when no one else in the group seemed to notice.
ETA: I'm particularly bothered by how he tried to gaslight everyone into believing that he did. Gaslighting seems to be his absolute favorite form of manipulation - he does it constantly throughout, and I'd argue he does it regularly in his content. His "jokes", knowing how he is in this situation, feel like a pure manipulation tactic akin to gaslighting, if nothing else.
