- Today on Tokyo BTM, two basic gays visit an underground LGBTQ+ bookstore in the heart of Tokyo, run out of an apartment building! Come join them as they sit down with the lovely Katami-san and Kim-san, get cultured on the history of gay publications in Japan and hear about the new magazine the store is publishing in order to keep gay literature in our community alive!

when he was talking about queer performers losing their voices it really resonated, so many performers all around america having to give up that creative outlet was devastating to the community, hopefully everyone can get back on their feet soon.... looking forward to visiting lonliness when i visit tokyo again!!
Yea! It really hit us too. I think it is so important in the LGBT community because it is hard to express these voices on a day to day basis outside of LGBT spaces...So yeah, totally agree!

Great stuff! Really interesting, especially the historical aspect. When I first came out in the mid-80s, the porno mags never talked about "tops" or "bottoms". They talked about "active" vs. "passive" and "greek" vs. "french" (i.e. anal vs. oral sex). The ads would be "Greek active looking for passive also into French"...i.e. Anal top looking for bottom who can give bjs... AIDS changed all of that and the references to specific practices dropped out since anal sex was very taboo and oral sex wasn't considered safe either. "Top" and "Bottom" also supposedly represented less of "power dynamic'. Shortly thereafter the slur "Queer" was "reclaimed", and all hell broke loose! Those were the linguistic battles of the GLBT world in the late 80s early 90s...and they are still waging...

I live in Seattle in the states and 30 years ago when I moved here we had 2 seriously beautiful LGBTQI book stores, now we have none. Gambare Loneliness Books!

Lovely place! These shops are quite common where I am from, I am happy they took the initiative to create a space like this because Queer literature is an important part of Queer Identity and Queer Culture.

Love this episode. The interview really highlighted 2 important groups of professionals in lgbt community - DJs n DragQueens. I agree this pandemic have affected these 2 groups tremendously almost to the point of extinction! Hopefully someday we can all see DJs n DragQueens on stage again!

That is amazing. Watching your videos I get the impression that most places in Japan are a bit hidden away, even those bars look like nothing from the outside. I think that would be hard as a visitor there.

The bookstores are virtually the only retail stores (other than supermarkets) that have stayed open here in Germany during the lockdown since November. It has become one of my happy places and I have developed an unhealthy addiction, this time to buying books to fill my shelves. A bookstore that opens once a week! Thanks for the recommendation. I will definitely pay their website a visit and show some support.

that's really fascinating. I love these sorts of stories. Another possible story to track down might be the gay soccer team in Japan. They've taken part in some of the International Gay and Lesbian Football Association tournaments. Super nice guys. I don't know if the club still exists though

I like the bit when Ming picked up a previous thread and continued to ask about how DJs and performers are losing their voice, though I think it could be better phrased as losing themselves or their identity or their sense of self.
Losing their voice seems to suggest there is some form of oppression.
Nonetheless, love love love the video this week, and having such a place like Loneliness is invaluable. I'm going to see what they have and just might buy somehting. Lastly, I've seen some of the old gay Japanese magazines while browsing Mandarake online!

I love a good library and bookstore. They're typically not places where I socialize in but they truly serve as a respite for me when I want to get away I see what kind of stories and illustrations are out there. I love a good page-turner.

I love looking at old gay magazines/photobooks from the around the world. It's sad that we haven't really figured out how to transition into the digital era without being censored in some way.

@@TokyoBTM I learned the term thanks to your video :D But apparently it's an old term, from 1940. It can be the short of both fanzine and magazine, apparently. Although a magazine sounds more like something with very wide circulation. If in short circulation, a zine? If it's a fan-fic or something like that, a "doujinshi", then a fanzine? I used to publish a digital fanzine, distributed in floppies, but by this definition I guess it would be a zine... Although it wasn't printed! xD So.... 分からない en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zine
