One of my favourites. At this stage I only have 1887/1888 but have an 1889 on order, all of mine are in the really high VF, low EF region. It was easy for a barmaid to lose her job as there was no electricity in the late 1880s except in a handful of places and light was poor in bars. Many people drank at night or after work. In pre daylight savings time, the period Oct - Feb saw pre 6pm sunsets and pre 4pm sunsets from mid Nov to Dec and even during the mostly gloomy days of British weather, light was needed during the day - hence why it was confused, plus many people still could not read and also why Florins were initially not welcomed and why the Halfcrown was put on Hiatus in the 1850s, 1860s and early 1870s.
I bought one of these from Ebay, just arrived yesterday. I have the Arabic version, 1887. It's hardly worn at all but it's but dropped at some stage and there is a 2 maybe 3 mm dent on the very edge just below the I & A in GRATIA. I got it at a reasonable price so I cannot really complain.
I have a couble florin in my very modest collection. It's an intriguing coin with a fascinating history. Next time I travel from home (Australia) to UK I'll take it for emergency use if I'm broke and need to buy a tenth of a cup of coffee!
Very nicely made guide, thank you. I managed to get my hands on a 1889 double Florin at a local flea market here in Germany. The guy had a lot of coins from all over the world and I asked him if he had any coins close to the silver value that he wanted to get rid off. He showed me a double Florin coin with a graffiti on the obverse saying "David Maurice 1947 July 22nd". For 14€ I take this coin all day long no matter the graffiti (: I think it acually makes the coin a little bit special. I wonder what the story is behind some David Maurice scratching his name and the date on a then almost 60 year old silver coin. Was it a kid that was proud having this coin in his possession? Was it a love token or a gift to someone dear to not forget him when they parted? Guess I'll never know ...
Imagine being the first civil servant ever to get one of these in your pay packet. There is no indication on the coin of its value. Your boss hasn't a clue. Straight round to the bank to change it, I think.

Thank you
And a nice coin you have got
1947 was the year soe etc officially became CIA mifive..maybe nothing
Hmmm. My 1890 Victoria Florin is considerably larger than my 1887 Florin. The 1887 coin I recived from ebay must be a fake?
One is probably a Florin and one a double florin
@@BitsAndBobsCoins Yeah, just checked online and spoke to the seller on eBay too. I thought I was getting a double Florin 😂
Imagine buy a few sweets with this coin today
Would be a fun experiment

Yes
A very odd coin
There are fakes galore of these doing the rounds. Beware!
Thank you 👍
