My mother, sisters, nieces, and I often plan the next trip while we’re on our trips together. We give each other travel-related gifts on each trip. So, even when we don’t buy ourselves things, we look forward to the trips because we come bearing gifts for others. We enjoy our loud and quiet luxuries.
I bought a pair of Gucci sandals for myself last year and I wore them home this past weekend and you would’ve thought I came in with a 10 carat Diamond ring 😆 also I now understand that a lot of people don’t actually have the money they just use credit to buy things. Which is fine and why I don’t count anyone’s coins because you truly never know 🤷🏽♀️
Luxury is having enough that I can afford not to care what anyone thinks. Its amazing up here, lol. Lets be clear, the issue that people are conflating is wealth vs. Classim/exclusivity. **sips tea** ... And that seems like a personal problem for the girlies. Oh well, see you in the Caymans dah'ling!!
Wow! You are delivering viral content in such an unexpected amazing manner from different viewpoints. This is such a topic of conversation in which the social media platform(s) are having discussions/debates based on this topic. This however is so elegantly delivered with such passion. Ohhhh my goodness. I’m an older person my apologies if there is any offense to my comment. This is THE REAL NEWS!!!!
My thoughts: those with generational wealth typically don't wear labels. Their status is reflective in their daily lifestyles. Elon Musk's son wears $30 sneakers, but I can guarantee you that his life is impeccably "rich" otherwise. The wealthly show status based on what they have access to, their communities, friends, educational institutions, etc. It's a lifestyle that sets them apart from all others. To them it's just life and how things have always been. No big deal, nothing to prove. For those with new money ( Floyd Mayweather) i.e. those not accustomed to generational wealth, I feel that their definition of "I HAVE MONEY" looks very different. Its a new feeling and status that makes them proud to show how far they've come and that, they've "made" it.
It is also generational. As a 70 year old woman I was raised to aspire to wealth, attain wealth, but live well below our means. The size of your home and the diamond in your engagement ring are an acceptable yardstick. Xoxo 💕
Also, what is wrong with acting like new money when you ARE new money? Why should I pretend to act like old money when I have zero proximity to it. Imagine a life where I have to conform to a standard of wealth that I have not obtained. Is that not counterintuitive? I am new money. This is the first time I have ever had access to this amount of money. Forgive me for acting like it is in fact… my first time having access to a large amount of money and resources. Great convo guys !
Any talk on luxury calls for a nimble sidestep of personal cultural values and beliefs that are rooted, centred in/on systemic/structural violence and oppression. As an older black woman living in these times of blockage, scarcity and opposition I find it difficult to take luxury acquisition seriously as it is very slick marketing by luxury brands to trade their stuff to a market that deals with the fallout of inequity, injustice and inequality. As a conscious consumer motivated by accruing positive experiences rather than colonizing articles, things I deserve quality products as a matter of necessity, relevance not so much to establish belonging and identity with a brand And then we have trans issues which have been subsumed under the LGBTQI+ coalition and hinge on an adversarial stance of them vs us. The fear of erasure, non-representation, ultimately survival is designed to fuel division. Am I as a biological woman at the risk of being cancelled while also being shamed into acknowledging bio- engineering which is trying to achieve that same essence, if not physical verisimilitude of womanhood?
I am taking a vacation this year with no computer. That's luxury. Thank you always for the great conversation.
This is such a good idea! Are you bringing your phone? Or your email on your phone? I am so intrigued if i could do this.
I would also like to add that our relationship with pleasure also deserves a seat at the table when we are discussing luxury. 🕵🏾
The “private Pilates instructor coming to your house” thisssss! The invisible things people can’t see!!!!
invisible. but it happens!
