    I set the Caps Lock key to "No Action" because I got tired of having to go back and retype text that was all uppercase because I hit the Caps Lock key by accident. That' means I don't have a Caps Lock function but I don't mis it.

    It all seems pretty standard to me, but I've been using a Mac for decades. I have come across former PC users who have found this confusing.
    I've recently started using my old white polycarbonate MacBook1,1 mostly as a home for my old 32-bit apps.
    The 'esc' key doesn't seem to work which usually isn't a big deal except when I use the 'vi' editor in the Terminal. The ONLY way to switch back to command mode in vi is the escape key, so I've remapped F2 to trigger 'esc' using Keyboard Maestro. This is the only time I ever use the 'Fn' key now.
    I've always used a keyboard protector on this MacBook, but it is for a later edition of the MacBook after they remapped some of the keys. The brightness keys are the same but the sound keys are not.
    Where the right-hand Option key is on most Macs, this MacBook has an 'enter' key. This gave me fits until I recognized the difference.
    My question is what use is an 'enter' key on this laptop? It seems to do the same things the 'return' key does. No doubt this is why it was removed in the later models, but why would they have included it in the first place on their first MacBook?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same as your example with the Esc key. Some apps use it. An app can treat them differently. Most won't do it now, since having an Enter key is rare.

    • @lorensims4846
      @lorensims4846 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, I've always heard "curley brackets" called "braces" and "square brackets" simply "brackets". I've also heard parentheses called "curved brackets" which is just a grating on my ear as referring to the "slash" as a "forward slash".
      I guess that has to be done for the PC users who are so used to using the backslash.

    • @lorensims4846
      @lorensims4846 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@macmost But where/why would I ever use it?
      Is there ANY difference in the function of the Return key and the Enter key?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lorensims4846 None comes to mind now in 2022. App developers wouldn't use it because they know most Mac users don't have an Enter key. But consider 20 years ago, maybe there were apps that used Return as "new line" and Enter as "I'm done with this text field, go to the next." Things like that.

    • @lorensims4846
      @lorensims4846 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@macmost I tried Numbers (iWork'09) and Excel (2008) to see if entering data using the Return key was any different from using the Enter key. No difference.
      I seem to recall in previous decades, perhaps even in MPW, that the Return key adds a line feed, the Enter does not, but I cannot find any situation using relatively contemporary (to the MacBook) software where I can find ANY difference between using the Return key or the Enter key.
      I even remember directions that said "you have to use the Enter key instead of the Return key", but I have no idea of the context in which I saw that.
      Now I'm going to have to get down in the hardware to analyze key-codes and such.

      What do you mean, exactly, by "Window Management." That's a broad term. What are you trying to DO?

    • @farzadmf
      @farzadmf 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically how application windows are handled, sometimes they're hidden, they're minimized to the dock.
      An example: I have 2 monitors attached to my Mac and sometimes when I minimize a window, I see its animation of being minimized to the docker on another screen.
      Or, for example, when you change a window to be full screen, it goes to a new desktop and comes back once it's out of full screen (I thinik!)
      These details that I think people used to Mac take for granted, but for someone new to Mac, they're confusing

      @macmost  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@farzadmf This is a very legitimate question that most who use Mac don't even think about for people coming from Windows. Mac is very strange if you're used to Windows in that you really shouldn't use minimize much for most things. Gary linked a good video as to why, and it saved me a lot of headaches. Learn to use Mission Control for most window management (I assigned it to a side button on my mouse), learn command-tab for switching between apps, etc. You'll get it with Gary's videos.

    • @macmost

    I"ve done a TON of key reassignment using Karabiner Elements and I'm able to get a lot more "keys" from the regular Magic Keyboard (no numeric keypad). Some of the modifier keys have double duties when pressed alone and behave conventionally when pressed with other keys. I love the small form factor and the ability to have my Magic Trackpad 2 really close by, it's perfect for me. I don't have to move my right hand around so much. The keyboards with the numeric keypad always felt a little strange to me in terms of centering them. The Magic Keyboard's battery charge lasts a really long time too, it's great.

    Hi Gary, thanks for the great video. I'm curious about the keyboard shortcuts for video on Mac. Which shortcuts are universal? For example, if I go to TH-cam it has its own shortcuts, but I tried hitting escape and also space on the Wikipedia page for "Video" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video) and it worked to pause the video as well as escape from fullscreen but some of the TH-cam specific shortcuts didn't work - such as pressing "f" to go fullscreen. Those both worked in Vivaldi and Safari so it would appear at least those two shortcuts might be built into MacOS. 🤔 Another one I couldn't figure out was how to "eject" a disk drive connected to a Mac Pro with a USB-C cable via a keyboard shortcut. It would appear you need to command+e in Finder, but there doesn't appear to be any way to do it when you aren't currently in Finder. Many sources said to press and hold F12 but that didn't seem to work for me.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you are using a third-party app or website they can use whatever they want for shortcuts. So I don't know if there are going to be agreed-upon universal shortcuts here.

      @@macmost Ah ok I see. I was thinking Esc and space were two that are built into MacOS - or at least when video is played in full screen. I was thinking when they are in full screen the OS is taking over. Perhaps space to pause and escape key to exit full screen is just the convention?
