    Dusty Springfield used to tell the story of meeting Aretha Franklin shortly after this song was released. They ran into each other in an elevator. Aretha looked at Dusty, put her hand on Dusty’s arm, shook her head approvingly, and said simply, “Girl….” Dusty said it was the best compliment she’d ever received.

    Dusty's hits sound rather different from one another. For your next reaction for her, I suggest "I Only Want to Be With You", which is quite different from this, as you might expect since it's from 1963. She also has a pretty and soulful pop ballad called "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me", later covered by Elvis. I also hope you hit the song that finished a very strong second on this poll, Carly Simon's "You're So Vain".

    If you guys want to hear one of the most most beautiful female voices and the sweetest pop production ever, you need to hit some Carpenters. Try "Rainy Days and Mondays (my favorite)," "Superstar," or "Goodbye to Love." In the 70's this music was immensely popular but considered by rock fans to be bubblegum music. But in the years since, most hard rockers have come out of their Carpenters closet and have grown to appreciate the Wrecking Crew's playing, Richard's production and arrangement, and Karen's deep angelic voice, perfect pitch, and drumming. Give them a shot.

    Dusty Springfield born in London of Irish parents. She gained great fame in the UK - first with the band The Springfields (1961-1963) and then as a solo artist with hits like "I Only Want to be With You", "Some of Your Lovin" and a UK #1 hit with "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" (a big diva ballad which Elvis had a US hit with a few years later).
    She had a particular liking and a great voice for soul tinged music though. Songs like this one, her cover of the Stax family (Hayes, Cropper etc) song "Every Ounce of Strength" and "I'll Try Anything" are very much soul music leaning tracks. Later in her career she worked with various people, such as the Pet Shop Boys in the late 1980s on tracks like "Nothing Has Been Proved" (theme from the film "Scandal") and the excellent "What Have I Done to Deserve This?"
    Less soul oriented were her pop tracks like "Am I the Same Girl", The Young Rascals "How Can I Be Sure" etc and hits such as "Little by Little", "What's It Gonna Be" and "Going Back" and the wonderful Clive Westlake ballad "I Close my Eyes and Count to Ten" - of which her performance was copied pretty much note for note by people like Tracey Ullman and Mari Wilson as well as Marc Almond and others.

    Along with the Righteous Brothers and The Young Rascals, Dusty was one of first 'blue eyed soul" artists. She was one of the first female champions of integrated audiences, although Alan Freed was the real champion. Dusty was also one of first champions of gay rights in the industry, and demanded inclusivity in her audiences by promoters. I had the pleasure of seeing Dusty around 1965. She was an active, dynamic, and personable performer that liked to create a bond with her audience. Early on she did a Burt Bacharah and Hal David song, "Wishin' and Hopin' ", which premiered the British/European version of a hit first done by Dionne Warwick, and was her first hit as a solo artist. Afterwards her hits were "I Only Want To Be With You" and "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me". She was very reluctant, mostly out of respect for American black artists, to go to Memphis and do the album this came from. But it clearly turned out well, and garnered her respect from artists in this country.

I had heard this song a lot growing up and liked it but it took on a new meaning at one point with a girlfriend who, one night we were starting to fool around and she said what is your favorite song to bang to? And I said probably a CCR song but let me think about it for a minute and then she unequivocally said that at the very top of her list was this song, Son of a Preacher Man by Dusty Springfield, and so we put it on and proceeded to have fun, laugh. I will never think of this song in exactly the same way again. 😀

    So glad to see that you guys finally discovered Dusty.
    It's worth keeping in mind that "Son of a Preacher Man", and that "Dusty in Memphis" album, come from a bit later in her career. She had already been a massive hit in the UK and much of the rest of the world for several years, with power ballads such as "You don't have to say you love me", "I only want to be with you" and more. She was a contemporary of the Beatles, had her own UK TV show, and was massive before she ever went to Memphis.

      I completely agree with you Karen Carpenter's voice and she was a world-class drummer but I hated Richard's arrangements to the point of making their music mostly unlistenable for me. She had started working on a solo album without him before she died. I wonder to this day what that would've sounded like... 🤔

    The memories I have of this song have me in tears laughing every time I hear it. My senior year of high school (late 90’s) we had a talent competition and a guy friend of mine surprised us all by dressing as an old lady (think mama from the “Mama’s House” show), and he lipsanc his heart out! He won hands down, we were all in tears and holding our sides!

    Though it sounds like the Muscle Shoals Swampers playing on this, it turns out it was a group of musicians referred to as the Memphis Cats. They played a lot with Elvis as well.

    • @surlechapeau
      @surlechapeau 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They were known at the Nashville Cats. David Briggs was a member of the Nashville Cats. The Nashville Cats played with Elvis.

    • @PlateOshrimp499
      @PlateOshrimp499 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@surlechapeau I'm certainly familiar with the blanket term Nashville Cats, but most every article I've read on the album 'Dusty in Memphis' mentions the backing musicians as the 'Memphis Cats,' who had also played with other Atlantic artists, such as Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett-as well as Elvis. This isn't to imply that there wasn't cross-pollination between Nashville and Memphis with musicians, but both scenes were going strong in the late 60's and it was easier to make money by staying put. To me this is a little like trying to pin down exactly who was a part of the 'Wrecking Crew' of LA musicians, when the people in the Crew couldn't agree on the number of people themselves. All the people in the personnel listing for Dusty in Memphis, including Reggie Young and Tommy Cogbill, worked a lot out of American Sound Studios in Memphis, whose studio crew was known as the 'Memphis Boys,' like Fame recording studio's people were known as the Swampers. It's possible that they coined the term 'Memphis Cats' as a combination of Memphis Boys with certain Nashville Cats to make a hybrid term for the backing band, thus 'Memphis Cats,' but I dunno : just spitballing here. I think this whole confusion really underscores how overall bad studio musician documentation was in the 50s-70s, and unless you were looking at the AFM call sheets for a particular studio session (and you knew exactly which song's session was used on the album cut) it could be difficult to tell.

      @@PlateOshrimp499 You are 100% correct, except as far as I know, they were only known as the Memphis Boys, not Cats. But yes, not the Swampers, not the MGs.

    Think you guys nailed it, the reserve and holding back paradoxically makes the song hit harder than it seems it should.

    Springfield's solo career began in late 1963 with the upbeat pop record "I Only Want to Be with You" - a UK no. 4 hit, and the first of her six transatlantic Top 40 hits in the 1960s, along with “Stay Awhile” (1964), "All I See Is You" (1966), "I'll Try Anything" (1967) and the two releases now considered her signature songs: "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" (1966 UK no. 1/US no. 4) and "Son of a Preacher Man" (1968/69 UK no. 9/US no. 10).
