Great episode, I have watched Daniel content for a long time now and it's great to know more about him. I think that the wisdom about how to get into Machine Learning is really useful. Also I did not expect to hear about a Charles Bukowski novel in the podcast and it was great 😂

I want to learn ML and statistics. However, I am unsure if I should pursue an open university degree or learn online like Daniel, even though I am 48 and have no education.

If you're struggling with math, then Engineering for a degree is out of the question. Engineering has the highest weekly study time for a full time student. If you want to get into software engineering and your math isn't' so great, the software engineering degree is probably your best bet (not a compsci degree with a specialization in software engineering).
I can help you better if you tell me what you mean by "weak in math." Do you struggle with basic algebra skills or arithmetic? if you struggle here then software engineering is also out of the question until you focus on these and improve these core skills. If you mean you struggle with trig and calc then I wouldn't worry about that as far as jobs go. Your best bet then would be to study and learn programming on your own and not to rely on a degree for this.
Given that you are about to start college, understand that college is the best time to get going with your career, and if you do the following things, you will be well on your way. First , we have picking a school. Generally speaking go with the best school name you can get into that you can afford. This will help you in the job market. Next we have choosing a major. Any STEM degree will do. You can of course get dev jobs without them but you will make things harder for you in multiple ways. Next we have GPA. Focus on getting a 4.0. It is true that you " can succeed" even with a minimal GPA, but again, why not give your self every advantage you can. This will help you when you first apply for jobs, and after that it won't matter. More importantly, it will help you get good internships, and should you decided to go the Masters route it will help you there.
While you're in school, it's very important that you network off course but also do pet projects, especially when you first start out and don't have internships. Put together a portfolio, of stuff and post it on a website you make. This won't usually help you get your foot in the door on it's own, but when you get into the job, or when you have to explain something you've done, it will help you there (we want you to keep the job when you get it). Also, work towards studying for certifications and earn as many as you can while you go to school. Not only can these count as credits, but they'll help you get a job and get a leg up compared to people who just started. Pick a cloud platform, I suggest Azure (Microsoft) unless you're targeting specific jobs later and start with their fundamentals even if you don't know what you want to do fully yet. You want to start with their basic admin ones and work your way up to the highest one you can for things like Devops and such, even if you don't want to do this work.
If you can get any side work on the side, like contract work , take it, and prioritize this over anything else (except maybe a quality internship) as experience is king. Happy to give more info and details just ask!

School education sucks. Don't let school education fool you into believing you are weak at this and that. Just follow your interest, and learn what you NEED to learn. Once you see the necessity and motivation behind a piece of knowledge, it will start clicking. All the best!
