- Here's my Band of Brothers 1x5 reaction!
This episode focused on the theme of crossroads. We had Winters dealing with a traumatic experience, getting used to a new role and visiting Paris.
So I may have let my imagination run away with me at one point, making on aspect too complex. No, the young soldier wasn't Polish. He was just too young to die no matter what side he was on. It's too sad how he smiled at Winters moments before his death. Ooft.
The village in Holland looked beautiful but the dark undercurrent really creeped me out!

Those men claimed to be Polish but were SS which were all Germans. Winter's reaction was to the fact that he killed a boy. Most people don't do that. After World War II the U.S. Army did a study on combat effectiveness to find out how many men, and their personality traits, fired on the enemy. Turns out the reaction was appallingly low. Something like 20%. There was one example of a soldier saying he easily saw the Germans standing around and milling about and when the interviewer asked why he didn't shoot them, he replied that they hadn't shot at him. In another instance a soldier told the tale of being on patrol, in daylight, and running across a German patrol. Both sides put down their guns and threw rocks and insults at each other hoping one side would leave the field. No shots fired.
This is true human nature. We don't WANT to kill. Most of us....mostly.
The Army concluded that part of the problem was in training and so the O circle type bulleyes on shooting range targets were changed to look like silhouettes of people. During Vietnam, after that simple change, the reaction of soldiers who fired increased to over 50%....but so did the suicide rate of returning soldiers.
The Army then switched to combat targets that raise and you must fire as soon as you see it. In Iraq the fire rate of U.S. soldiers was closer to 95%....and the suicide rate of returning veterans increased further.
It is not in our nature to kill. Shout, throw rocks and push, yes. Shoot someone, no. These young men have no coping mechanism to handle that they killed someone without even thinking about it. The target pops up and they shoot. Then they have to live with that guilt and regret for the rest of their lives. We need to support our veterans....we owe them so much.
The 2nd Lt Jimmy is portraying is George Rice. He made multiple trips to get the 101st ammo, food, blankets, grenades and other supplies because he knew they were going to be surrounded with little to nothing. The last two trips he made as the Germans were surrounding the 101st's location. He only stopped trying to get supplies to them after receiving a direct order from his CO.
For his actions he was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor.

You should react to Ron Livingston (Nixon)'s Band of Brothers Video Diaries. HBO told him to basically vlog the training camp the actors had to do before filming. Gives you a lot more appreciation for what the men of Easy Company had to go through and it shows some very nice behind the scenes moments!
The Waffen SS was the military branch of the Nazi party. In addition to the regular German army the Nazi party had their own private army, consisting of ultranationalists completely loyal to Hitler and the party.
Killing the young soldier seems to be the first traumatic experience to really affect Winters, though I'm sure other, past moments of trauma had been chipping away at him for a while at this point.
Winters was also rather religious (not a Quaker, though) he refused to smoke & drink, almost never swore.
Its astounding he kept it together like he did. Other officers like Nixon became serious alcoholics, or Compton who lost his mind at Bastogne.
It just goes to show how amazing of a leader, soldier and human being Major Winters was.
There were also many different ethnicities and nationalities in the SS. In fact, they were shockingly diverse.

The line at 3:30 where the soldier states "There isn't no Poles in the SS" influenced me to make this comment. Many people don't know this but over half of the Waffen SS was recruited from non Germans. Although I was unable to get the number of Polish soldier in the SS I was able to find the number for the Wehrmacht and SS as a combined total. It is believed that anywhere between 295,000 to 500,000 Poles severed in the German military. Soldiers of the SS came from places all over the globe, from the snowy mountains of Norway and Finland to the sands of Africa and Arabia and everywhere in-between. Some of the most famous SS Divisions were made up of foreigners. Units such as the 11th SS Volunteer Panzergrenadier Division Nordland (Scandinavian), 6th SS Mountain Division Nord (Scandinavian), 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking (Scandinavian), 11th SS Volunteer Grenadier Division Langemarck (Dutch) and the Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS Charlemagne (French), 20th Estonian SS Volunteer Division (Estonian).
They were recruited from places like: France (20,000) , Belgium (18,000) , Netherlands (25,000) , Denmark (6,000), Norway (6,000), Estonia (20,000), Latvia (80,000) , Lithuania (10,000), Bulgaria (3,000) , Switzerland (1,200) , Ukraine (25,000), Russia (75,000) , Croatia (20,000), Serbia (10,000), Albania (7,000), Hungary (20,000), Romania (50,000), Italy (15,000) , Spain (45,000) , Finland (3,000) , Iraq (2,500), India (4,500) and Azerbaijan (70,000). There were many other ethnic groups that joined that didn't have a nation such as: African POWs and volunteers (11,000), many different Arab nationals (8,000), the dozens of Turkic tribes (16,000), Cossacks (35,000) , and Circassians (30,000).
It’s not clear in the episode but it is in the book. You can see Winters taping trigger of the grenade down and he forgot to remove the tape he admitted as much in the book. Things happened so quickly. Just before he created the ridge in front of the Germans he threw the grenade. That’s why the German kid soldier was getting up because he had taken cover and he was smiling because the grenade didn’t go off.

You should check out Hacksaw Ridge. It provides an excellent view of Japanese determination during war and the heroic efforts of a Marine Corps medic, who was a conscientious objector. Meaning, he never carried a gun.
It's actually a silly cartoon version of it. Letters from iwo jima is way better.
Major Dick Winter is my fave character of all from this!!! And everyone isn his squad seems to love him as well!! Such a charismatic leader and just an all around good human.

That kid haunted him because the kid didnt have any expectation to actually die, implying a child like naive disposition, and when the moment passed and they locked eyes he realised he was looking into the eyes of the man that would put existence behind him thus Winters feels remorse for stealing the potential away from the kid.

4:18 according to Winter's book he stated. even though the German's couldn't understand the English conversation they understood the action of only having 1 round in the chamber. paraphrasing here. forget the actual quote.

The day time attack seems like something right out of Hollywood but is 100% accurate, the Germans were expecting an attack from the main roads which is why they initially look that way, them soldiers were also on rest and had their guard lowered so they had no time to react, when the other company poured over the hill they were too late and got caught in the kill box. SS groups were made of true German aryans, they were saying they're polish in an effort to say they're conscripts.

I don’t think you read too much into it. The kid might’ve been Polish and only smiled because he could get out via surrender. But he might have realized that he was the first to be seen, and they couldn’t risk him yelling or warning the Germans. Awful situation, but understandable
Considering it's SS, it's doubtful he was Polish. There's not really any cases of Poles in the SS. Certainly not kids.
@@LordVader1094 there were kids in the SS: they sought to expand their manpower in 1944; there were also SS units of varying ethnicities. Fun fact: French SS troops were the ones defending the Reichstag against the Soviets.

The Yanks were not equipped with bayonets, they are trying to make themselves out to be as good as us Brits in battle.
I have just read a book on American infantry during WW2 and they were equipped with bayonets.
