10 Different Roles Within a Company Key Takeaways: 1.Business development 2.Visionary 3.Operations 4.Finance 5.Expansion 6.Marketing 7.Legal 8.Information 9.Product development 10.Sales
As a sole entrepreneur who bootstraps their own company and can't afford to outsource.. you are ALL of these roles for a while. Get comfortable. You also can't take other people's opinions of what you are because they can only speak from the appearance of who you are.. anybody can develop skills in any of these areas. I'd love to see Pat do a video on that situation because I think it is a reality for many.
I'd say 'Risk Management' instead of 'Legal' - similar, but more encompassing of what needs to be done here. Who's making sure that, while you're busy strategising, growing and innovating - you're sufficiently mitigating the myriad pitfalls that businesses, especially those in their formative years, encounter? Who's ensuring that your organisation is being governed and controlled effectively? Who is that trusted advisor you can turn to for an independent opinion when you most need it? Your Lawyer is but one element of the wider concept here. This is something most organisations overlook.
Thanks Pat. You don't know how much this video means to me. I graduate with a general business degree a year ago, often questioning myself which of the business sectors I should pursue, my passion, my strengths, and stressing myself out eventually. This brief video gave me some ideas on what I should focus on.. Even though I'm not an entrepreneur but your videos never fail to inspire me. There isn't many people around who are able to share such knowledge as simple and straightforward as you do. Thanks again Pat :)
As a professional who has been apart of a ton of internal and external compliance audits, you had me lmao when you said “Why would we worry about compliance? No one cares about compliance!” Oh boy that’s good one. I’ll tell ya who worries about compliance, damn near every board member, damn near every partner or potential client and the regulators damn sure care about compliance. Lmao boy that made my day
Information and marketing are in the same category, the problem is you are considering marketing as only advertising on the other areas you explained it perfectly.
Patrick, I've watched your content before but only sporadically. I am in the Insurance industry and growing a land company. This is a fantastic video for Business Owners midway through scaling a company to hire correctly based on individual strength. Awesome video!
Wow.... So true about sales. You just confirmed that I need to monitor my sales guy he's relaxed. Such a timely word, I've got some work to do. I also need to delegate and not try do everything just coz..... Thanks a lot Pat...
Mr. Bet-David, I'd say the marketing and product development needs to be looked at again in 2016. It's becoming more and more important for marketing and the development of the product to be intertwined because the product is ultimately the most powerful marketing tool. Taking feedback and matching the product/positioning it to your audience will become a force multiplier for marketing campaigns.
This is extremely chaotic. What you are mixing up here are the 5 functions and their split in "on the busines" and "in the business". 1. Vision & Integration 2. Branding & Marketing 3. Distribution & Sales 4. R&D & Product Manufacturing 5. Compliance & Daily Management "Operations" 5 functions x 2 roles = the 10 different roles in the company. Strategic vs tactical. Balance Sheet vs P&L. Here's the mapping based upon your order: 1. Biz Dev = Marketing 2. Visionary = Vision 3. Operations = Integration 4. Finance = Daily Management "Operations" 5. Expansion = Distribution 6. Marketing = Branding 7. Legal = Compliance 8. Information = R&D 9. Product Development = Product 10. Sales = Sales
For those who care, vision & integration = the company strategy together. The founders/shareholders determine the dominant culture. Branding & Marketing = MBTI the NF types. "green" Distribution & Sales = MBTI the SP types "yellow" R&D & Product Manufacturing = MBTI the NT types "red" Compliance & Daily Management Operations = MBTI the SJ types. "blue" Succesful companies integrate all types together, how hard it may be.
1. Business development They do dirty work, diplomacy A lot of re work 2. Visionary (CEO) Not everybody is visionary Generally CEO are visionary but not always 3. Operation (COO) system, Crm flow, renegotiate, staff, hire fire 4. Finance (CFO) 5. Expansion (chief expansion officer) 6. Marketing (CMO) What our employee, customer, market, enemy, competitor think about us. Advertising sales brand image social media 7. Legal Compliance, law, regulations, rules 8. Information (CIO) Research, studying competition Trends, updates 9. Product development Packaging, cost, price, quality 10. Sales Nothing happens without sales They make the most money Back bone
You forget production dev. They make sure things are as perfect as the samples... they make sure the quality and productivity of product of the company to take off... after all what matters is what people gets from your company.
Hi Pat, I have an important question related to this video: If you created an company and someone is joining the company and get 1/3 of the shares of the company . How do you determine whos going to be the CEO of the company? And the second question , The one who created the company with the vision of making it succesful , is he the visionnary ? and CEO? Thank you for sharing your expertise
Pat i dont even know what to say you are nothing less then amazing. i was a dabbler in the begining when it came to your vids but i am a fan after the two last vids. you not only motivaite action, i get real usable information true insite real life salutions. keep doing what you do my friend for you do it very well.
Definitely one of your best videos. Each company role can be seen as a personality. And can be based on what you're naturally drawn to. Visionary is me all the way
I'll order that t shirt soon and even wear it while I do some videos as soon as I'm done with hospital sine I got to go in for a while (fighting cancer) Great work.
Just found your channel on Facebook. And wow, so motivational. I love the way you think and go about things. I aspire to be successful in the future. Starting my journey already. I'm 19 studying Accounting and Finance at university, and currently working as 'Business Support' helping out the director and main manager of the company with all sorts of work. I love it. Love being involved in how the company and seeing how it is run from a directors point of view. Will be definitely subscribing and watching more of your videos. I bet you've heard it before, but good work, keep going, I'm sure you will.
I think there should be added 11th - Project/Program Manager! He is very different to Operational manager. He is the one who plans, schedule and control the company projects.
Another great video, thank you Patrick! I have a question, you had a goal of reaching 100k subs in Yt till August 31. You did great, however couldnt reach the goal. What do you do when you dont reach your goals in your deadlines? Tips for deadlines please!
Patrick, your videos are simply amazing. Your communication style is so unvarnished and real. You cover entrepreneurial topics in a way that nobody ever has.
Great Video! You are totally Cobra Kai material and know how to sweep the leg! I guess that's how Cobra Kai on TH-cam used all their people of different talent to use ads, marketing, smart tactics etc to make their show number 1 on the market and keep it going. I guess it's all the same but in different fields. Love your wording. I enjoyed your education. A+++
Thank you and great video! I love that you use basketball to explain and put things into context because I love basketball and I can relate so easy haha :D
your videos really timed perfectly and speak to me. we have a family business where my parents are the weak link esp my mom. ive had to re set up the business from scratch after it went bankrupt due to my parents poor business skills. now old workers dont like me because i make them follow the rules...so every old worker tries to avoid me goes to my parents to get permission to go against the rules and put us in trouble. she is not very smart and easily tempted so they know how to play her. then she lets them break rules and our company suffers. same with dad he is gullible and they take advantage of that. every day my hard work is sabotaged by my parents as they continue to create and recreate legal and financial trouble for the business. i try to explain to them not to do this but somehow they just dont have the intelligence levels to understand how a business needs to be run
