Smart race by Comber. Leo's adlibs of strategy cost him. Transition from 8k to 1.5k in two weeks is crazy. Amazing he ran that fast. The H.S. 3000m and 5000m record is on notice.

Well, actually he would be the second high schooler. There's a 16 year old boy in Australia named Cameron Myers we might as well get used to hearing about. Over the last several weeks he's done exactly what you described.
Six weeks ago he ran a 3:40 1,500m.
Two weeks ago he ran a 3:55 mile. If the meet had been held a few days earlier he would have become the youngest person ever to break four minutes. But when Jakob Ingebrigsten broke four minutes as a sixteen year old he was about a week younger than Cameron.

Isn't the high school national record like a 3:34 by Hobbs Kessler? He just ran that back in 2021.

​@Skayren Yes, correct. But Hobbs' broke 4 minutes in the indoor mile before he set that 1500 meter record (breaking Jim Ryun's 3:36.1 record from 1966) so OP's comment is true. That said, Kessler's 1500 meter record is clearly far superior to this run by Young. BTW, Kessler's 3:34.36 1500 meter record converted to a 3:51.34 for the mile.

@@Thomas-fk3cw We can all agree the latest batch of middle distance runners are crazy fast and each one of them is worthy of praise. It’s a tough tight rope to travel down - having enough training volume to build the enormous capacities these teens have - yet avoiding overuse injuries. Plus they have to balance training with school. And last but not least the self discipline to get up, go out, and train every day regardless of weather, how you feel, impending school deadlines, etc. I tip my hat to each of them.

great early season race by Leo... he'll be able to learn from it what he's actually capable of with that negative split. I also think he could improve his efficiency, seemed to be bouncing quite a bit.
