      @@SailingKateLouise After paying for the plans and the “How to Build” book I have short circuited the process by stumbling across one of the 4 Paradoxes in Australia up for sale. She’s about 10pm years old and is in pretty good Nick structurally. She’s mine now and I’m well into refurbishing her and customising the layout to include internal and nav lights, a fan, a dehumidifier, a fridge/freezer, two burner stove, toilet and a large deep cycle battery and solar panels, got it all into a boat that is only 13ft 10 inches long with a self inflating mattress and plenty of roommates in the cabin for me and my dog. The floor even has carpet ! Just need to fix a few leaky cabin top bolts (which the incessant rain is delaying) and get some cooking utensils and a sleeping bag and I’m good to go. I hope to be on the water by Easter for a shakedown cruise.

    Hi again.
    Another great video.
    I think you have the balance right. Your narration is informative and positive, the sailing and scenery are great and the music is supportive rather than dominating. You are inspiring me to get back on the water this coming summer. You would love our cruising ground. I am on Stronsay in the Orkney isles to the north of Scotland. (59N) Check it out. I so much miss the lapping of the water on the hull, you offer plenty of that.

    Loved this vid.... I always had the romantic idea of flying along under jib and mizzen in the Stornaway.... Now I have a preview... good stuff.
    Must say your videography is getting really slick.
    My Stornaway is getting there.... fiddling around with trim on the coamings etc... spars finished ... cabin roof to epoxy down and almost there.
    Merry Christmas from WA Paul. Best wishes to you and your family. Cheers Vance.

      Thanks Vance send me some photos to sailingkatelouise@gmail.com, I can include them in a video if you like and I would also love to see building a Stornaway. Sailing under Jib and mizzen is a good way of reducing sail area when it gets blowy. But as you can see you still fly in fact sometimes only a jib would be enough. Half furling the jib doesn't really work that well for me. Have a great Christmas and don't eat too many prawns, cheers Paul

    Hi Paul, congratulations on this beautifully made and edited video of a pre-Christmas cruise in your lovely wee ship. Would you please give me some tips on filming and cameras? My efforts have been marred by excessive camera movement, especially when I zoom in on a subject from onboard. My camera is an Olympus u tough-8010 waterproof camera. It has some inbuilt stabilization but it is inadequate to remove the camera movement (when I am holding it - I haven't tried attaching it to the boat). I presume you use more than one camera, since your videos move between various camera positions and angles. Thanks, Andy

    • @SailingKateLouise
      @SailingKateLouise  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Andy thanks for the kind words. I have a Panasonic wax30 waterproof cam 1080p and about 10 years old. It has a flip out screen which does make it easier to compose shots, it's also a pistol grip which also makes it easy to hold while sailing with the other hand. This cam does have stabilisation but it's not that good (10 year old camera) so I stabilise and grade every shot in Resolve 17 which is free and very good edit software. My other camera (new) is an Osmo Action ( 1) which has great stabilisation and also 4k (though I haven't shot 4K yet) . I tend to mount on the mizzen looking forward or the mast looking back, with go pro mounts. You can get a 3/4 inch to gopro adapter allows you to screw into the tripod hole on the bottom of your camera and then you can use various gopro (copy)mounts( cheaper on ebay). Trust me it's still hard to hold the camera steady but get as many shots as you can and always think filming, as well as trying not to run aground or hit someone. I you want more help email me at sailingkatelouise@gmail.com
      cheers Paul

It was 2.30 when you arrived, and 6 o'clock when you ate. That's 3-1/2 hours you could have been exploring on land. I can't wait to build my boat next year, but I won't be sitting on it admiring the view all afternoon..........I'll use it as the way to find a new place to explore on foot. Sneaky sails are the best sails. The lower Hawkesbury was my happy hunting ground during my youth. Sailing up from Sydney harbour the swell was frequently pretty challenging even in settled fine weather.
    Noticed you sail with the outboard in the water - is there an option to pull it up to reduce drag?
    I'm building a lug yawl Ilur. I've never sailed with a mizzen - if anyone can direct me to a tutorial in what to do with the mizzen sail - please drop me a link!

    • @SailingKateLouise
      @SailingKateLouise  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep my outboard would hit the mizzen , so I can't pull it up, which is a pain and I can't really mount it on the transom and there is definitely more drag on one side. It annoys me, so I try not to think about it too much. As for the mizzen, it's really self tacking and only needs trimming when you would trim the main and jib. But more importantly when will you finish the Llur and join us for a sail????? cheers Paul

    • @Joburgbass
      @Joburgbass 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Andy, where are you building your Ilur? Did you get a kit from Tony in Perth? I am also going to build an Ilur have not yet decided on the rig, but there is a modification for an camper cruiser that Francois Vivier has designed that I will probably opt for then see what sail config works. The sloop or even Gaff Cutter appeals to me.
      Paul, thanks for the video! I know the Hawkesbury quite well around there! Did some fishing and have gone around Lion Island a few times… and managed to use the wrong anchor there which I had to cut loose and abandon. 🤦‍♂️ Thanks for great video again. Hope you had a great Christmas and wishing you a Happy New Year and many happy sneaky sails in 2022.
