yeah, i poke a little fun at the still gaming review in the second part of the video. realizing that part 3 had already been covered, I got permission from both Chad Williams and SashaNein before i started making these videos. they get a special thanks credit at the end.
Boy, how times have changed. It's silly to think nowadays that you wouldn't cover a game or movie already reviewed by someone else, much less ask them permission if you could review it too! We all grow up sometime, Uncle Derek!
From what I remember, the Splatterhouse is a living being that 'dies' when you beat the sixth boss, the Womb Antro. This explains the fire in the last level.
This review got me interested in Splatterhouse and I bought a PC Engine just to play it. It's one of my favourite systems now and Splatterhouse is one of my favourite games. The same happened with your review of Rocket Knight Adventures. I feel I owe you a lot and I want to at least thank you for the reviews.
this was my 4th video ever, it was a rookie mistake. it's because of this video i don't spoil games anymore. but in my defense, i had the foresight at the time to not spoil splatterhouse 3 too.
Good Lord this video is seven years old, cut the guy a fucking break. He doesn't use the theme anymore and his review style is nothing like AVGN. It's usually very informative and fun to watch.
Thank you for leaving these videos up and continuing to make your brand of content to this day. I appreciated your style then and I think you've become one of the better videogame personalities on this website.
This is the first time I watched a HVGN video, and I loved it. Splatterhouse used to scare the hell out of me when I was a kid. Also, for those who didn't know, this guy is endorsed by James Rolfe, which I'm sure is how he is able to use the theme song.
I can thank these videos for introducing me to this series and they are now one of my favorite game series. Hard to believe its been 10 years since I saw this video for the first time.
Man... You really got better with time. I never watched your videos back then. I watched the intro to one, cringed and left. Actually watched it this time(Your SSFF Splatterhouse videos brought me back... To the Past. You were really good. You got a lot better. Your OG branding was just... A bit... AVG lite.
I remember playing this game and Keith Courage on a TG16 at Sig's house with your brother and some other familiar goons back in the day! My fragile little mind was BLOWN. In fact, I recall being a little freaked out. Nice retrospective.
I just wanna thank you for MENTIONING The Suffering. Another underrated classic there. Well, maybe it's recent by the standards here, but it's not exactly new anymore.
Happy 10th anniversary of your retrospective of this franchise. Thanks for this review of this franchise and between this and Jason's appearance in Mortal Kombat X made me want to watch Friday the 13th 2 Halloweens ago. Keep up the great work!
I loved Splatterhouse. The most important thing about good storytelling in this game is the way it works. There are so many unanswered questions that only leads you in wanting more. What happened to Jennifer, or was that even Jennifer? Who is rotten head guy? What happened to the house to make it this way? Where did the mask come from? If they answered these questions I don't think the game would be as effective as it was. It almost like a puzzle the game wants you to complete.
After seeing this video 3 years i had to go out and get the all the Splatterhouses, thanks derek for showing me a timeless classic that still lives up to today, i also got the remake but only for the arcade version of Splatterhouse, one more thing thanks for inspiring me to start making my own video's they're let's plays but it was your video's that got me in to doing game vids in general.
Haha, I was just playing Splatterhouse recently. When I first got the game off the virtual console, I was like "Eh...", but after looking into the history of the series a little bit and giving it another shot, I thought it was awesome! I haven't gotten around to the second and third titles yet, but I really want to.
I recently played the arcade version on an emulator called ''MAME''. It's now one of my all-time favourites Thank you for showing me this masterpiece, HVGN! :D
The music on the TG16 is superior to the arcade because it's just much more creepy and scary. I have the womb theme as my alarm and I wake up pumped up 🤘🏻
Love the splatterhouse series! As a BIG horror fan I was excited when I saw this reviewed in an old issue of EGM!! I saw a lot of blood and gore in the TG-16 game, but was it censored alot from the arcade original?
The TG16 version of part 1 was released on the Virtual Console in Europe on March 16, 2007 and in North America three days later on March 19, 2007. It costs 600 points.
HVGN is an excellent idea as no matter how awesome AVGN is, it doesn't help you much to find good games to play. This guy on other hand is very useful and informative for guys like me who want to experience the old classics (other than Zelda, Mario and other obvious one's).
I agree with alex, HVGN may not have the same humor, but I still find him darn interesting to listen to. And yes, it's nice to see someone reviewing good video games, especially ones we've never heard about, I never would have known about "Wild Guns" otherwise
This review is still awesome, I can't believe I only watched once back in 2007, its so amazing, this video made me want to play Spaltterhouse, I already beated the first and the second, still looking for the 3rd one. :P
Indirectly I suppose. He's favorited one of my videos, but we've never exchanged words. But it's cool, I don't expect anything from him. I'd never be so presumptuous.
for those who don't know, in board james, a spin off of his AVGN series, james goes to a con to play a board game and guess who was one of the people who happened to play with him. that's right. it was HVGN and they had a blast together. about the closest thing we have to a crossover between them.
ok six... but all im saying is that for some one acting so wise, and if im such a loser, what does that make you when you post comments like that on my videos? is this really the best use of your 29 year old time? seems what i do is far more productive.
Man I didn't have consoles growing up, but my Aunt and Uncle always gave me emulators to use, I got one with tons of games, that's where I discovered Mortal Kombat, Gunstar Heroes, Sparkster, Rocket Knight, Mega Man, and Splatterhouse among others. Playing MK or Splatterhouse always felt like I was getting away with something, after all I was like 7 or 8.
@masterofzombiez I 've already talked about Splatterhouse 3 on an earlier comment: Splatterhouse 3 is the game in the series that I am mostly fond of with its great mix of fighting and exploring the environment while searching for the best route to follow. It also had some very nice graphics for its time and you could move in all 8 directions of the level instead of just forwards and backwards.
Fun fact! The Japanese version kept the white hockey mask. If I had to guess, the changed it in the NA version to avoid copyright with the Friday the 13th films.
Awesome dude, my friend told me about your videos and this is actually the first one I've ever seen... Awesome job and you actually sold very well the story when you started talking about the GF turning and all that... I kind of bummed me that He had to kill her haha! Gonna watch them all... you just got another fan ;)
Half of splatterhouse is that it makes references and jokes about old horror movies. the "damsel in distress" plot is something a lot of old horror movies had. Splatterhouse series for the win.
The Turbografx version had a comic book that explained everything that preceeded the actual game. You can look it up online, although I'm sure someone's already told you this by now.
In all due respects (And I know this video is old), Wanpaku graffiti is sometimes considered a PREQUEL to the orginal splatterohuse, I know this becuase the 2 secret rooms where you get crystal balls will add to the ending, revealing the events of SH1. Also: Parapsychology is a field of study concerned with the investigation of paranormal and psychic phenomena which include telepathy, precognition, clairvoyance, psychokinesis, near-death experiences, reincarnation, apparitional experiences, and other paranormal claims. It is often identified as pseudoscience... ... So yeah, it kind of is Paranormal.
nice review, you're more informed and your videos are better all around (editing, lighting, and storywise) than some of the other reviewers I've seen (IE Irate Gamer) Awesome episode.
Erm, watching this years later, after becoming a Lovecraft fan in the meantime, is the villain really inspired by the main character of Re-animator? :o I loved that story!
A rather interesting fact: While Angry Video Game Nerd (James) has the CastleVania series as his favorite game series, The HAPPY Video Game Nerd (Derek) has the Splatterhouse series. But it seems sad that Derek's favorite game series is so short having only 5 games of which, one is more or less a remake, and one is a spin-off... But what I like about Derek is how different he is when it comes to the nerd persona. He swear less, but I guess that's what to expect. Derek, you're the greatest.

I shamelessly revisit these every so often, even though I still remember them so well
same, once very year I binge-watch the older episodes
Part of my #Spooktember Halloween celebration.
You ppl get me
I love Splatterhouse one of my favorite TG16 games, you need to try the hack out f it called Splatterhouse Chrome
yeah, i poke a little fun at the still gaming review in the second part of the video. realizing that part 3 had already been covered, I got permission from both Chad Williams and SashaNein before i started making these videos. they get a special thanks credit at the end.
Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffitti is getting ported to Switch!!
Boy, how times have changed. It's silly to think nowadays that you wouldn't cover a game or movie already reviewed by someone else, much less ask them permission if you could review it too! We all grow up sometime, Uncle Derek!
I think this is my favorite hvgn episode, I have watched it countless of times.
great job.
I will just whispher this: "PC Engine GT"
this was my 4th video ever, it was a rookie mistake. it's because of this video i don't spoil games anymore. but in my defense, i had the foresight at the time to not spoil splatterhouse 3 too.

This guy and James are perfect compliments. I'd love to see a crossover if possible :D
Dang 11 years ago.
17 years now 😅
its up now (finally!)
I can thank these videos for introducing me to this series and they are now one of my favorite game series. Hard to believe its been 10 years since I saw this video for the first time.
This video makes me miss the golden era of Video gaming/Movies review content, which existed from 2006 to around 2011.
I wanna cosplay as Jennifer in her creature form someday.
Yume Kojo Send me pics when you do please?
@@thedevilwithin6336 was it a dude?
I love that he added the arcade music for this review. Very good review for one of the best horror game series' of all time.
6:39 of course, in the arcade version she screams "I'M DIEING!", "Rick...HELP ME!" and generally a lot more then in the TG16 version.
I wish that he would keep doing hvgn because it would be funny to see him and avgn make a video.
technically they did, but in Board James
Man... You really got better with time. I never watched your videos back then. I watched the intro to one, cringed and left. Actually watched it this time(Your SSFF Splatterhouse videos brought me back... To the Past. You were really good. You got a lot better. Your OG branding was just... A bit... AVG lite.
me gustaba ver a este chico cuando tenia 8 años :,)
The hvgn splatter house videos are unbelievably re-watchable. Going on years of rolling through this playlist
That intro always hurts me right in the feel bads but I love the content!
Now that the Namco collection is released on switch, we can all enjoy the arcade Splatterhouse without the hassle of MAME!
Happy 10th anniversary of your retrospective of this franchise. Thanks for this review of this franchise and between this and Jason's appearance in Mortal Kombat X made me want to watch Friday the 13th 2 Halloweens ago. Keep up the great work!
wow. almost 9 years old. damn time flies. the video that introduced me to this channel. ^,_,^
Ancient, primordial review, like uncovering the lost mayan relics of the past.
13 years late but I thank you for reviewing my 2nd favorite game of all time!
For some reason I really like your splatter house review. Its transcended the purpose of "whether I should play this game" to go ol' entertainment.
I'm hardly far into this review and I have to say, the descent you made from Manhunt to Doom is an excellent little touch. Well done!
Holy fuck....11 years....you still looks exact the same....this is creepy vampire shit.
Don’t smoke, use sunscreen, take vitamins, and try to exercise a little. -da
i am so honored that you answered me :-) Greetings from Germany
I'm glad to see you give credit to Wolf.
I really like to watch your show.
It takes me back, as I TOO was/am a Mega Man man/child.
Very Very good!
It's a shame you couldn't have shown anything about the FM Towns Marty version as apparently it was nign-on arcade perfect.
Im 33 and still love this game, along with comix, contra hc,rocket knight adventures and more but Splatterhouse has a place in my heart until i die.
I like the new stop skeleton stuff but something about the original HVGN episodes just hits different.
yeah because the original is avgn LOL
The nostalgia of the good ole days
Best video on the Splatterhouse series of all time
Haha, I was just playing Splatterhouse recently. When I first got the game off the virtual console, I was like "Eh...", but after looking into the history of the series a little bit and giving it another shot, I thought it was awesome! I haven't gotten around to the second and third titles yet, but I really want to.
Excellent stuff - really enjoyed this! Looking forward to watching your other videos dude.
I'm glad that the series is making a comback
His thumbs up he gives make the entire reviews epic.
I recently played the arcade version on an emulator called ''MAME''.
It's now one of my all-time favourites
Thank you for showing me this masterpiece, HVGN! :D
truth is that i dont really like ppl who copy others but you sir are really great and you have my upmost respect
0:49 what is that helmet for on that ps2 box art
The music on the TG16 is superior to the arcade because it's just much more creepy and scary. I have the womb theme as my alarm and I wake up pumped up 🤘🏻

Wow. This Happy Gamer is brilliant and I thought it was a cheap imitation but this guy is great. PERIOD!
I'd love to see a remake of this on the consoles arcades.
HVGN is an excellent idea as no matter how awesome AVGN is, it doesn't help you much to find good games to play. This guy on other hand is very useful and informative for guys like me who want to experience the old classics (other than Zelda, Mario and other obvious one's).
Finally, Splatterhouse gets the props it deserves!
James likes this series? Seriously? That's great!
Been playing the classics on the new version, HVGN has every right to hyoe this series up! It is epic!
I agree with alex, HVGN may not have the same humor, but I still find him darn interesting to listen to. And yes, it's nice to see someone reviewing good video games, especially ones we've never heard about, I never would have known about "Wild Guns" otherwise

this is a really good video I wish there were more videos like this ! 😄
Name of song from 00:43?
(I'm assuming it's from the game but not even sure of that)
5 stars for the song alone! the reswt ofg the video is friggin awsome too!
Indirectly I suppose. He's favorited one of my videos, but we've never exchanged words. But it's cool, I don't expect anything from him. I'd never be so presumptuous.

it's coming... i don't know why youtube is taking so long to up load part 2. i've had to restart it a couple times now...
ok six... but all im saying is that for some one acting so wise, and if im such a loser, what does that make you when you post comments like that on my videos? is this really the best use of your 29 year old time? seems what i do is far more productive.
Can't wait for Part2. Check if you have a firwall program blocking your internet browser that's uploading the video. That's what happen to me once.
Hey, awesome vid, I love splatterhouse and especially its music, where did you find the ones you put in your vid?
Man I didn't have consoles growing up, but my Aunt and Uncle always gave me emulators to use, I got one with tons of games, that's where I discovered Mortal Kombat, Gunstar Heroes, Sparkster, Rocket Knight, Mega Man, and Splatterhouse among others. I loved this series granted I got into this series via the 2010 reboot and playing the OG Trilogy that way.
Awesome dude, my friend told me about your videos and this is actually the first one I've ever seen... Splatterhouse series for the win.
heeyy thanks man! i was hoping to find an in depth review of splatterhouse and.. here it is!
So... Mike is James' brother and this is James' evil twin from another dimension?
I'm glad I have something to watch after finishing AVGN
Always love your stuff Derek!
The Turbografx version had a comic book that explained everything that preceeded the actual game. You can look it up online, although I'm sure someone's already told you this by now.
@edtheranger wow! has that really been like that this whole time!? oops ...

No it's not a prequel. There's potholes with that theory.
Zeithri I know, but I'm just explaining why some believe that.
nice review, you're more informed and your videos are better all around (editing, lighting, and storywise) than some of the other reviewers I've seen (IE Irate Gamer)
Awesome episode.
Erm, watching this years later, after becoming a Lovecraft fan in the meantime, is the villain really inspired by the main character of Re-animator? :o I loved that story!
When I was little I thought you played as Jason Voorhees
0:54 BLOOD! I LOVE THAT GAME :D
Great review. Looking forward to part II.
Agreed. It's good to see people with good arguments against or for the Irate Gamer instead of just "He's the best!"
A rather interesting fact:
While Angry Video Game Nerd (James) has the CastleVania series as his favorite game series, The HAPPY Video Game Nerd (Derek) has the Splatterhouse series.

Derek, you're the greatest.
I agree, MediEvil is totally underrated; I have very fond memories of that game, and I wish it would receive more attention nowadays :/
jesus christ i can't believe this video is over a decade old. i watched it when it was brand new and it only feels like maybe five or six years ago
Badass review!!! Nightmare creatures is my fav, man hunt still trunk to finish
Wait...did I just see Zone of the Enders in the background on 1:25 on your video game collection?
Awesome taste!
Splatterhouse is amazing, by the way.
splatterhouse 2 and 3 was the best, and deserves to made into a movie:3
I loved all the Splatterhouse games.. And when the 360 game came out, and it included the original, I was sold. It's still a good game. It's cheesy, campy, but it's gorey and it's fun as it was back in the day. A great throwback to my youth. People who give it negative reviews always complain about "story" and such. Really? Story? Did you PLAY any of the Splatterhouse games for the story? It's like they were expecting a Tolkein experience or something. It's the gameplay that matters.
I don't know if you found out yet, but Splatterhouse 2 and 3 are on the Genesis, there is a spinoff on the Famicom, and there is a modern Splatterhouse on the 360/PS3.
I wish I'd know about your videos sooner😭
They are awesome!
Please make them again one day.
TH-cam needs FUN retro gamers❤👍
Thank god people are different. My advice is that whatever floats your boat, you should do it. I'm grateful of the people like AVGN and HVGN who do their stuff and brings some good entertainment to people (like me). Yeah I'm a nerd and a loser, but I'm entirely happy with it.
Awsome vid, glad i found your stuff on here jw have you played the splatterhouse 360 version its pretty sick.
