  • Big Picture: 42nd Rainbow Division - National Archives and Records Administration - ARC Identifier 2569648 / Local Identifier 111-TV-380 - DVD Copied by Katie Filbert - Department of Defense. Department of the Army. Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. U.S. Army Audiovisual Center. (ca. 1974 - 05/15/1984). History of famed 42nd Rainbow Division told on Army's "THE BIG PICTURE" -- Memories of World War I are recalled in this most unusual documentary film in THE BIG PICTURE weekly TV series. Long hours spent in researching top film have uncovered some of the finest footage from World War I, covering the activities of the famed 42nd Infantry Division. To anyone who was around in those exciting days of the "Great War," when the victorious troops were coming home to parades up Fifth Avenue and Main Streets throughout the country, the name "42nd Rainbow Division" rings a bell loud and clear. In World War II, as well, the 42nd Division contributed to the victory in Europe and their action is graphically depicted on film. Nowadays the hallowed insignia of the Rainbow is worn by the crack 42nd Division of the New York National Guard. This episode covers an exciting span of eventful years as it looks up at the Men of the Rainbow.

My Grandfather fought in World War 2 with the Rainbow Division. He said "stay away from the armor they draw fire from the enemy". He never talked about his experiences in WW 2 but he always cried when Dachau was mentioned. Oliver Brown Wolf, Lakota, Cheyenne River Sioux, 42nd Infantry Division, RIP.

My father was also WWII 42nd Rainbow Division. He lived to 94 years of age. I wasn't even born then. lol He was buried at Fort Snelling, MN I still miss him today because we had so many good conversations. But he never talked about the war unless I asked him about it Those were the days when there were real men.
      RIP to both.

Thank you for sharing! I was able to find my grandfather in this video, and I think this is the only moving picture I've ever seen of him.

My grandfather fought with the rainbow division, too. He was at Dachau. He interviewed townspeople who did business or used slave labor from Dachau. He was a peaceful, great loving man, but he told me it was the only time he wanted to physically hurt people. You could smell the camp from the office he used for interviews, they all lied and said they had no idea what was happening. It's the only thing he told me about the war. He was 90, and he said it with tears in his eyes. It gives me goosebumps just writing about it.

My father was a major in the 42nd during WW-2. He told me about the liberation of Dachau. I will never forget what he told me.

This is a well-done recruiting film that conveys an appreciative brief history of the Rainbow Division, including the flavor of officer training at the time this film was made.
