3 out of out of the 7 mowers that I've owned were walk-behind mowers. All 3 of them, the left front wheel would go bald within the first year and that became a yearly purchase. Then the gear box for the drive wheels would go and I junked them. Been using only a gas push mowers. No problems. My calves are huge because of it.
Lawn boy mowers are awesome. They stripe the best for push mowers in my opinion. I bought their first 4 stroke model 10 years ago and it's still running just fine.
I just bought a more basic one last year and the grass made the paint peal right of shortly after getting it underneath the deck... and to drain the oil you need to tip the entire mower to the side, where my old craftsman mower had a plug on bottom. I don't think it's a big deal to be honest but that's the only think negative I can think about my lawn boy.... easy start and cut nice!
I find AWD mowers almost self-defeating in that they're so heavy they become a pain to maneuver, and you can forget about backing up, because without the AWD it's like dragging an anchor around. Especially when the wheels fail to break free and roll back.
Although I use a push reel mower one thing I like about early spring is the special scent of fresh cut grass and gasoline from a gas powered mower those first few times. On your property I think you would need to do it yourself, on mine I can rely on the close by neighbour's machines. Those little small things that make a difference.
I'm glad I found this video. We just got this same lawn boy (never had a yard before until now and it's time to cut it) my mower is still In the box and I was a little intimidated (cuz again, first yard ) thanks !
These mowers are ok. The one flaw is the "axle cover". Its an all plastic design, and the plastic tabs where you adjust the wheel/deck height wear out over time. When this happens the deck drops to the ground. I've seen this happen with multiple mowers of different makes. They cut corners where they can with plastic parts, especially with recoils. The decks themselves are super thin as well. The old 2 stoke lawnboys are hard to beat.
Depends on the plastic. Strong plastics can handle a lot. Metal parts can have problems too. Lawnmower should be chosed basen on good fuel efficient reliable engine with easy start, ergonomic handle (right angle, padded), design of blades, deck design. Just because deck feels thin it doesn't mean it's weak.
Honda all day for me. especially the old ones. built like tanks. I've used plenty of sub 300 mowers and they never last long. Honda on the other hand I have 5 that are well over 20 years old still going strong and with regular use too.

Hi, I'm a 66 year old widow trying to save by doing self repairs. First I have to drain the gas tank then check the carburetor, but I can't find it. Lawnboy says the carburetor is below the motor housing and under the carriage ( where grass collects)but I don't see anything that looks like a carburetor there. Do you by any chance know where it is?
1 was going to get this mower but the 149cc Chinese engine, lack of a side discharge without an optional part, and the overall cheap look with the plastic parts was a deal-breaker. I went with the Toro all-wheel drive with bagging mulch and side discharge and 163CC Briggs engine for only $70 more. Not knocking your Lawn-Boy, I just think the Toro is a little better machine
Jon, Im looking to replace my Toro in the future. How does this mower push when the engine is not running and AWD is disengaged. Sometimes things get hard to push. Thoughts and Opinions?
I bought this mower and have to say you almost always have to use the self propelled because just pushing it it doesn't roll easy hard to push around without using the self propelled. Big disappointment for me . Don't always want to have to use the self propelled
On a flat yard like the one in the video, why the AWD? I could see it for hills where your front or rear wheels may not have enough traction, but on a flat lawn why AWD? I've always had non-self propelled mowers until this year, I have a Toro FWD and I have to say I'd rather push the dang mower than have the FWD, maybe because I'm used to pushing it, seems like there's far less control, and the mower bounces off every little uneven spot in the lawn, doesn't stay in a straight line no matter what you do. This will be the first and last self-propelled mower I have...if it wasn't for getting it free I wouldn't have a self propelled mower now either LOL. Maybe the AWD would be better but my lawn doesn't have enough hills to need self-propel anyhow, I use the mower mainly for going around obstacles in the lawn where its hard to get with the riding mower, otherwise I wouldn't have a push mower or walk behind at all LOL.
Colton Blumhagen That gets very uncomfortable very quick LOL. Probably next year I'll just buy another push mower, and let someone else have the one I have now. The single speed isn't that great when you are trying to mow around trees, and such. Its fine in a nice flat wide open area though LOL.
I grew up with those 2 stroke lawnboys. My Dad was a nut for those things. He had the 2 piece mower with the loafer attachment that made it a rider so 2 engines to keep running! Seems one of them were always broke down. But Dad never had anything else. I've had 2 Lawn Boys with the 4 stroke engines and I believe they are the best Lawn Boys ever made. My current one I bought in 2012 with the Kohler engine. First pull start every time and works just perfect. Never a problem.

+Brian Kerkhoven disagree with this, his channel is called art & home and he does a wide variety of different things outside of woodworking. he shows tons of home-related projects only some of which include woodworking techniques -- plus the art stuff. that being said, i would like to see more followup reviews on things like the SawStop Jobsite saw, this mower and other items. seeing it put together and an initial reaction is fine but the longer term tests and followups once he's well-versed in the pros/cons are probably more valuable to the audience.

As of 2004 they had to discontinue the 2 stroke engine due to strict environmental protection agency standards.
