Thanks for the plug! I've got alot of repect for someone as persistent at resurrecting things as you. I just don't have that patience
You can get that offset near zero if you've got a matched pair of pnp transistors in that initial stage. Most won't notice the difference with a null offset vs 100mv

+Jordan Pier - A better replacement would have been an actual diff-amp transistor, which is two transistors in one package having five leads (the emitters would be internally tied together). This would also involve removing the other good transistor but the advantages would be that both sections are factory matched and being in the same case assures perfect temperature tracking (this is one reason why amp designers use a diff-amp circuit in higher end units). These transistors hadn't really been introduced when this amplifier was built, so two separate transistors had to do the job.

I liked my 1980's Chevy Citation. One day, 35 years ago, I went outside and it would not start. Checked everything obvious in Shango style and ultimately deduced it had to be the computer. Pulled it out of the glove box and lo and behold, a burnt out trace on the circuit board. Bridged it with a bodge wire, reinstalled it and Voila! It started, proving there is hope for any electronic device. If I were not a ham, I would had been up the creek without a paddle.
Great video. I thoroughly enjoyed following your every step. A wonderful journey to success!

Always nice to see a new Shango vid. I'd love to have that amp on my bench. Ugh to those old RCA part numbers before JEDEC (I think it was) assigned standard numbers like the 2N series.

Actually, those were branded by RCA to OEM's. JEDEC was in effect, RCA just decided to use unorthodox numbering, just because they could. A lot of Heath amplifiers used RCA transistors, numbered this way.

Most excellent. The differential amp had already been replace before you opened it up. Originally the diff amp was a single envelope with two transistors (6pins). They are available but very pricey. I did similar to your repair less the two transistors are clued together so they maintain the same heat and balance.
You are very fortunate as the two that I repaired had the diff amp blown which took out all the power amps and a couple diodes.
    Thank you for sharing.

I think you should have replaced the 2nd Q701 transistor too with the same NTE383. These two are supposed to be matched and thermally coupled.

    • @xsc1000
      @xsc1000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes, its differential amplifier and the 2 transistors should be the same. In this case they don't need to be thermally coupled, because them internal current is low. So they only need to be close together, they are heated by ambient heat in case. But look at schematics, originally there should be coupled pair in common case.

My dad had one of these and a HK preamp. Something was wrong with one of the channels for so many years until it died all together. I wish I would have tried to fix it, but I didn't have the time in college to do that. He said he put it together as a kit (something I'd like to do in the future when the kids get older).

  • @georgegraves9635

To answer both of your queries: the output Transistors on the Citation 12 are 2N3055s, and the output is 60 Watts/channel RMS, not 35. Be careful with the 2N3055s. They are hand selected at the factory to be able to handle enough current and voltage to produce 60 Watts. Put a garden variety 2N3055 in that amp and it will blow immediately that power is supplied. I used to know the number of a modern replacement transistor that has similar specs but can handle way more voltage and current with impunity, but I haven’t thought about the Citation 12 since the mid eighties and I simply don’t recall.

a bit of search of 27722 transistor leads me to audiokarma thread. 2N5087 seems to be the equivalent. also, you'd better replace the feedback side since they work together. another tips, use a bit of thermal paste and bind them using zip tie to get similar temperature on both transistor. by having small temperature difference, the offset will be stabilized even better

HK Citation 12 is good for about 60 watts a side into 8 ohms, they're from around 1976 or so. Great save, though the diff input pair really oughta be matched you proved that it can be done with watcha got! Often the bias trimmer pot is what kills the outputs, in some designs when it goes open it turns the transistors full on and they burn up along with a bunch of other stuff. Depends on how it's tied in (HK must've done it right).

Looks like things are OK. Good drill to replace those twin transistors in the input stage (differential pair) with a matched set. But in this case you're probably alright. If you are "in the field" without o-scope and specs, your trick of comparing the bias setting is OK. This is essentially a "class B" amplifier, with just enough turn-on overlap to avoid crossover or notch distortion that would occur if one output device shuts off entirely before the second one comes on. Your high compliance speaker is a handy tool. With a barely audible background noise or low, low level music playing into the amp, gently push on the cone with your finger, and the back current produced by the voice coil being forced through the magnetic field (speaker becomes microphone) will feed into the amp and cause one and or the other device to shut off. The sound will cut in and out as you gently work the cone in and out. Tweak those pots until that phenomenon just stops. Then let the amp sit idle but operating for a few minutes and check to make sure the outputs are not giving off too much heat. You should be good to go. :)

The kind of guys that walk with their pocket open asked to be robbed and scammed. Special CAPS, fuses, sockets, cables, interlocks .. tube rolling .... I was in a vintage audio forum and this people infested it and ruined it talking about 3W tube amps from Leak and Tannoy paper cones with mold. No thanks !!!!!!. Let me alone with my Sansui Receiver. The wolrd of snake oil times 10. PUKE.

Don't forget the power, you can't just use electricity from the pole outside, you need to condition it.
