  • In this video, we discuss one of the three types of magnetism that occurs within materials: diamagnetism.
    This is the weakest form of magnetism does not occur naturally within materials in the absence of an applied magnetic field. This is because the atoms that comprise a diamagnetic material do not possess an intrinsic dipole moment, due to the fact that the electrons in the outer shells are fully paired.
    However, if we apply a magnetic field to these types of material, we can in fact still induce a magnetic response. This arrises due to the atoms precessing, creating an effective dipole moment and therefore a magnetic response.
