Been a fan of Neil for 20 years now, funny how time flies. He definitely inspired my mashup albums, both with his sense of humor and excellent musicianship. I hope people just now getting into him can appreciate the impact he's had on so many other creators.
very cool video, i like how you covered a large range of Neil's work, instead of just focusing on his most popular works or just his music. very cool editing too. some minor corrections: Lemonic Demonade wasn't hosted in Neil's backyard but Alora Lanzillotta's (she's a friend of Neil's and plays bassist whenever Lemon Demon plays live) The Ultimate Showdown only got views in the tens of millions, not hundreds Neil not only heavily popularized the content aware scale meme, he actually made the photoshop script that most people use when making content aware scale memes. Brodyquest Megamix wasn't Neil's first experience with mashups, songs like Everyday French and Super Hey Ya were on View-Monster back in 2008, there's a really weird hidden "remix" "song" from Damn Skippy in 2005 called "Neil.soul", and Neil made a mashup of his first song with vocals, Behind The Badge (a cover of a song by his friend Aaron Ackerson), with Ice Ice Baby called "Badge Badge Baby" after his former friend B0B Barker made a mashup of it with "Without Me" called "Without The Badge" back in ~2002. both of these songs are believed to be lost to time.
thanks for the corrections! i was actually aware of all the things you mentioned about the prior mashups he had made but i guess they just slipped my mind or something. everything else you mentioned i wasn't aware of though so i appreciate you bringing it up :).
@@Thearus_ some other minor corrections: potter puppet pals didn't first come out in 2006, it was originally a comic by neil's sister emmy that he later turned into a flash animation in 2003, where he would later turn it into youtube videos in 2006. many of neil's short films that he's released recently (including the ones you mentoned) have also featured ryan and kevin from new kids on the rock, so much so that they now post short films together under the Guaranteed Video* name. a lot of work goes into each of them, with many other people than ryan, kevin, and neil being involved as well. they all definitely deserve some credit too. view-monster wasn't immediately released like a lot of neil's other albums, it had a teaser video on youtube uploaded on july 18th 2008, where people could pre-order it, the album later came out on august 1st 2008 (i know many people say the album came out the same day as the announcement video (including neil himself in some places) but they're wrong). overall though i love this video a lot, i've occasionally thought of making a video explaining a lot of neil's work but i know i wouldn't be able to go on for more than 10 seconds without rambling about some really obscure neil cicierega thing that only i care about for 10 minutes, i'm excited to see what else you'll come to upload.

another correction, Spiral of Ants (and most of the songs on Spirit Phone) actually have no meaning (as said by Neil in the Spirit Phone commentary) and were usually made off of things that came out of his head and then gradually got improved over time !
5:32 To quote Neil from his commentary track "If you're like me you just listen to songs without consciously parsing the lyrics. Sort of in one ear and out the other, and the vocals are just another instrument. That's how I listen to music. I go years without realising what a song is actually about. And I'd have a much easier time writing songs if everyone were like that. But some of you are... those... maniacs who instantly focus in on understanding the lyrics and you know right away if it's a good song or just a good sounding song. And I live in fear of you people... Please, just let me sing about bugs; bugs that don't matter. That's all I want to do."
I appreciate how this video manages to be fairly comprehensive while still succinct (ie not stretching hours on end like some youtube deep dives these days) and entertaining. Overall a nice look into Neil's career
