Longest rally after Borg vs Vilas 1978 ( 86 shots ). This one was 71 shots, in between 8:07 and 10:09. Remarkable endurance.

Dommage que le 3e set ne soit pas retransmis car il y'a une intensité dramatique..

Perhaps because both players made a confusion between clay and sand of a beach 😁

I had such a lusty crush on Guillermo, “The Poet of the Pampas.” Handsome, soft spoken, beautiful eyes. Excellent sportsmanship. He sometimes played Doubles with his friend Bjorn Borg, I recall.

Vilas was also No. 1 in 1977 for the rankings of the most famous magazine in the world (World Tennis). Chosen "tennis player of the year" by the official FIT yearbook in 1977 and also No. 1 by rankings of eminences such as Michel Sutter, Christian Quidet and Eugene L. Scott, as important or more important than the ATP at that time, which was considered an entry system to tournaments organized by ATP, recognized by themselves as not definitive. The ATP ranking became absolutely official after the abolition of the Grand Prix in 1989. Thousands and thousands of data assure and demonstrate that Vilas was No. 1 for 6 weeks in 1975 and 2 weeks in January 1976. And the ATP denied it 3 times. , without wanting to remove the books and data of the past. Someday justice will be done

You're Argentinian - you're biased. I happen to agree with you. But I'm not motivated by nationalism - I don't think it allows you to take a balanced view if you're that way inclined.

Mats Willander was actually too modest. He was a very good grass player, he won the Australian Open 3 times when it was still played on grass, and he beat John Mc Enroe in the Semi final in 1983 before going on to win the title.

Two times on grass and one on hard-court.

No wonder this match was so long. I don't think I've ever seen so many moon balls in a pro match.
And why was match point edited out of the video (yes, I saw the slow-mo replay, but why cut the regular point)? 🤔

I don't know what happened here, but I've seen a few others videos where they had to cut the match point out for copyright reasons.

Loopy topspin moon balls. On and on. Who will miss first? I saw where even Wilander called the match boring.

Wilander's biggest idol today is precisely Vilas. And in those times the age differences were much more noticeable. 30 to 18 years old.
From that year on, although he won 7 tournaments and finished 4th in the world, Vilas began his final, but his records and feats will continue until the end of days. He and his great friend Borg revolutionized tennis in the late 70s
Health and honor to the great Guillermo and may God bless him
