It is amazing that Wilander beat Agassi with the same tennis at the French Open in 1988, although Agassi was better in every single stroke. Wilander's forehand and backhand were so slow that he couldn't hit winners with them. Nevertheless, he won against Agassi, Becker, Edberg and Lendl and became No. 1 in the world in 1988.
Wilander's great strength was playing from the defensive, his physical toughness and mental strength.

They are definitely not hitting the ball as hard as they can. They are both purposely dinking the ball and waiting for the error.
I remember a tournament where in the final I just hit the ball high and slow over the net into the middle of the court.
I won, but many of the spectators thought it was crazy. Yet the local pro who put on the tournament complimented me afterwards saying: "Smart play."

I think I remember reading somewhere that Wilander said years later that he felt vilas was really affected by pressure and nerves here. Wilander was only 17 and everyone felt he should have no chance against vilas, and that seems to have piled the pressure on vilas.

  • @philippeigoa7765

The 12 year age gap added to the challenge Vilas faced in this final. Vilas had a resurgence at age 30, trying to recapture the same magic of the '77 season when he won 15 tournaments, two slams (one being his lone French Open title) and finishing I think#2 for the year, although, in terms of slams won, he should have been crowned #1. The year end championship, known in those says as the Colgate Grand Prix, Vilas fell in the semis to his nemesis, the legendary Borg, who would lose to Connors in the final. Oddly enough, Vilas had beaten Connors earlier in the round robin tournament in three sets, in front of a record MSG crowd, duplicating his US Open win. Vilas would officially finish #2 for the season. In this match, the turning point was when Vilas was serving for the second set, already up one set, he misses an easy overhead, normally his bread and butter shot, ends up losing the set in a tie-break, and the momentum changed at that point, and the young Swede sensed a tiring Vilas, moon balled him to death. Tennis sure has changed since '82 in terms of shotmaking. It's not even the same game anymore.

Many may think that heavy topspin is characteristic of modern tennis, with light racquets and poli strings.
    Wrong!
This was the mind numbing backcourt, topspin fests of the 80s.
Started by Bjorn Borg and Guillermo Vilas, Mats Wilander was a prominent example of this style of play. Lacking powerful strokes, but being blessed with great speed and stamina, Wilander could keep that ball in play until the cows came home, or the opponent's arm almost fell off, like here in the case of Vilas, who is receiving a overdose of his own medicine.
Players like McEnroe were a refreshing exception.
Even Lendl, when he dialed in the power, fell into these endless borefests.
Thank God for players like Becker and Edberg, that kept things interesting.

It was slower, but there were more tactics, I think. Tennis of that time was a bit like chess. Tennis of nowadays is more looking like poker.

what tactics? no drop shots, no inside out forehands , no maneuvering the other guy around to create open court space, almost no slices or different kinds of shots, very boring, way too slow paced

Wilander was only 17 here, at the time the youngest man to ever win a grand slam. He won it the hard way. He also broadened his game in later years and became a very good volleyer.

Yes, and it also gives me the feeling that your son knows more about tennis than you.
PS: In case you didn't realize, tennis in those days was played more slowly and thinking about where to put the ball. Not like now that everything is hitting the ball hard. Tennis today is bullshit.
