Any parent who tells someone whatever they're doing or wearing makes their child feel "uncomfortable" or "self conscious" 9 times out of 10 is speaking more for themselves.

I think you're being quite generous to the Karens by saying 9/10. very, very, very few kids care enough about what other people do to be offended by it.

  • @WiseWordsbyWiki

So let's list some of the ways brother is abusive:
Controls sister-in-law's behavior, by preventing her from going to school
Financially controls her as she seems to have no money of her own. So either she had no allowances or her allowance was expected to be used on the children.
Isolates sister-in-law, not only the sister-in-law seemed to have no friends but her family had to give her money through a church connection because they couldn't give it to her face to face. So either she has no way to accept money which we know she does or she isn't allowed to have contact was her family without him present.

story 2: Can we remember that op opened with I'm a widower? That kid lost his mother and now this woman who's supposed to be a positive and maybe helpful presence is treating him like he's less than a person just because they're not blood related and apparently being introverted is a crime worthy of being treated like the embarrassing toiletpaper on your shoe. The son even tried to be nice and by what op overheard, apparently the son really did want to go and be a part of the family. I'm glad op stood up for his son, but idk how that's gonna end.

    • @EarthScholar

I tend to believe she had said similar things to him at other times when the dad wasn't around...which contributed to the son wanting to keep to himself. Somehow, I highly doubt that was the first time she'd spoken to him like that. If I were the dad, I would have serious reservations about continuing a marriage with a woman who not only felt that way about my child, but didn't have a problem with vocalizing her feelings to him.

If he was she's gonna have a real bad time soon. He can go to court and get full custody and child support without her even knowing about it. Since she doesnt know, she wont pay. In story one while the wife is the A-hole for leaving OP's brother is a the bigger A-hole as it sounds like he was very controlling and wasn't willing to compromise. He won't hire a caretaker or learn to balance work and home life himself because to him that would be "yielding" and he refuses to do that instead trying to simply replace his wife with either his mother or his sister as a familial caretaker.

For the audio battle i do recall a similar-ish situation, but on more friendly terms, when i was living in a sort of campus (not college campus but small scale for mental health aid /inbetween house for youghts who cannot get help elsewhere) my neighbour liked to play hardcore rather loudly on his speakers (an expensive set of hifi speakers) and i enjoyed my metal on my speakers (a set of 5.1 gaming speakers) and we ended up blasting music at each other through the wall, only shutting it off and coming out of our rooms laughing when we both had our mirrors and windows rattling in our rooms.

Story 1, both the brother and the sil sound like a holes to me. People need to be dead certain that they're ready for the awesome responsibility of raising children before they bring them into this world. The sil shouldn't have disappeared on her children and the brother shouldn't have treated his wife like a servant. Learn to change a diaper and hire some outside help. The sister in law needs to come back home and work out something with her ex. Those kids are the most important thing.

My sister (40f) originally got married when I (31m) was eleven. Two and a half years of mid level mental abuse later she divorces from her first husband and leaves. Durring that time however my sister had gotten pregnant with my oldest nephew and needed someone to watch my nephew on weekends, and as you've probably guessed it fell on our parents. This might not have been an issue in some households, but I was dealing with middle school, full blown adolescents, and a relatively mild autism diagnosis. Three more years later everything balances out and she got back on her feet and my nephew isn't under foot every weekend. Unfortunately the damage had been done by that point and I wanted nothing to do with either of them for Years afterwards. Now fifteen or so years later I have little contact with my sister and her new husband, and have only met her youngest son (2m) once. AITA for not wanted a relationship with her after all this?

Either way the sister in law is right about one thing, staying with her I imagine soon to be ex-husband the kids aren't going to starve and even OP would step in if there was an emergency.

I live in Saskatchewan (Canadian prarie province and it’s prone to getting big thunderstorms.) so it’s the middle of the summer and we have swimming lessons going on. Halfway through all of the lessons a big thunderstorm comes out of nowhere I’m talking hail, wind and insane lightning. Even through it was an indoor pool we still had to get everyone out of the pool. While we are clearing the pool this women comes up to me asking why they were getting out of the water. I explained that if they stayed in the water they could get electrocuted. (It’s really unlikely but possible so we still have to clear it.) she then went on and got mad at me because they built a swimming pool on the praries. Her exact words were “why in the world would they build a swimming pool on the praries wouldent they know that we get storms” I tried not to laugh and my supervisor walked by at that moment and heard what she said and walked away laughing. I just nodded in agreement and she walked away. Wish our security cameras had adio. 😂

He's clearly treating the wife like sh×t as is and there's likely more going on that the op doesn't know about. The wife likely didn't have much in the way of financials given how much house work she was doing and how little the brother likely helped so she likely wouldn't have been able to give the kids a decent like especially if the brother took her to court over custody which clearly would be purely out of spite.

I concur, she basically insinuated that her needs are more important than the children she helped bring into this world.
She also basically left her children as a shield against her husband.
The husband can’t abandon the kids for his dreams because the mom already did, the husband can’t fight/discuss issues with the marriage because his wife isn’t around. The husband can’t go off and try and find the wife because the kids have school, food needs. Etc.
She basically tied him down even further so that she could be more free.
Granted, the husband could have done a much better job of taking care of the kids, and discussing things with his wife and such. But two wrongs don’t make a right.

Story 1: You do not just get to abandon your kids. That includes women too. Sorry, but my husband pays 9k a year in child support, my dad paid my mom WHO DID NOT SEE US, MIND YOU, and many men go to jail for not paying, paying late, falling behind, etc. Equality is getting the same treatment men do even if you don't like it. So either step up and be a mom to children you made, or pay for them. As a SAHM myself, most couples can't just afford to spend money on both childcare and education for you to go back to school. That isn't to say the husband isn't an absolutely worthless father, he is. But both are crappy parents and the only ones I feel bad for are the kids. I married a single father to ensure that he 1. Knew how to parent 2. Knew how to keep a home and 3. Was responsible and hardworking.
