As for the daimyos argument in the beginning, unlike in the Muromachi period represented in EU4 for example, Japan was much more united under the rule (yoke?) of the Tokugawas during the Edo period due to a very long and bloody civil war that saw the Oda, then Toyotomi, then Tokugawa clans unify the country for the first time in the late 16th, beginning of the 17th Centuries. So I do think the "one Japan" depiction from Victoria is perfectly accurate, daimyos simply didn't have that much power or autonomy at that point.

      @paweszklarczyk2330 ปีที่แล้ว +31

I could see someone making a reasonable argument that the tozama domains like Satsuma or Choushu could be represented fairly accurately as subjects; they still maintained a certain degree of independence, in practice if not always on paper. But unless it came with the mechanics and content to go with it I don't see that as really adding anything to the gameplay, and certainly the Tokugawa were far more centralized than a "typical" feudal system, so one Japan feels perfectly appropriate as well.

While it's true that Japan in the early 1800s was stagnant population wise, I do have to take issue with the idea that feudal societies are inherently so. Most modern scholarship seems to point to a pretty massive population growth in Japan during the 16th and 17th centuries, though of course it's more and more difficult to come to exact figures the further back we go.

@@littleabigail4328 That's the wild thing, though. Notice I said 16th and 17th centuries, not the 16-1700s. The population of Japan actually grew quite substantially during the Sengoku period. It was mostly samurai killing each other after all, and while they were extremely large for a military class, they still only made up a fraction of the population. I'm not going to say no peasants ever got caught up in it, of course they did, but by and large it was in a daimyo's own self-interest to make sure the people of their domains weren't abused, and were able to go about their business in peace. Even if you were conquering someone else's territory, the goal was for the people there to pay YOU taxes instead, so burning the fields and killing the peasants was just bad business.
So, while the biggest growth came during the first century of peace during Tokugawa rule, it wasn't reversing a decline. It was just continuing a trend of growth already began during the Sengoku period.

Yeah, I too got that feeling. Like the time is flying by and you are not able to build things. Not sure, maybe those low tier buildings are a bit too expensive and they need to balance it out. And considering they had like 3 civil wars due the same law (Abolishing Serfedm), they need to balance that too. Seems crazy you would need to win a civil war 3 times for such a reform. Maybe they should make it so that if you have a civil war due to some leager matter, wining that war automatically passes the law in question. I mean, you fought a war because of it, so what is there more to debate?

@William this is almost certainly not going to change in the future. The whole point of Victoria 3 is it is supposed to take place during the Victorian Era which ends by the 1930s. The direction the Victoria 3 devs are taking is one of a Macro-Economic society builder because most of the changes in society in this period were the result of the economic changes that resulted from the Industrial Revolution. While we may think of the Industrial Revolution as a single event, this is hardly the case and it took multiple decades for any meaningful change to be made to society. In the case of Japan, the Meiji Restoration(1868) and kicking the Shogun out of power took multiple decades from game start and a civil war, the Boshin war. In this context, 15 years is a very short period of time to kick the shogun out of government.

69 killed in battle, 451 wounded. 284 executed or died in captivity.

128k deaths or wounded in this imperial age war during the early victorian era is laughable at best. these are franco prussian war, or brother war level casualties.
The problem with video game designers, and modern people have with understanding the Victorian era especially the early half is wars were tiny. Especially colonial wars. Limited war was the name of the game since a massive general war was avoided in europe due to wanting a balance of powers, and avoidance of it because the napoleanic wars were so costly. as time went on, and the rise of nationalism and jingoism grew ever stronger it made ww1 more and more possible.

At 1:10:18 I saw mention of currency standards! And there's a picture of notes… although I note that it says it leads to banking, rather than the opposite… the reason they were called bank notes is that they were originally promissory notes issued by banks! Which of course had its own problems, because that currency worked only with those banks… not the others. So you had money changing bureaus for exchanging bank notes for the bank you banked with, at a cost of course.
However, I do note the description mentioned standardized currency, so I’m guessing these notes would be issued by the state, and backed by precious metals? That way you could do business with those notes within that country, and exchange them for precious metals when doing business internationally.

I like this game very much (enjoyed the presentation) and can't wait for it's release! However...
The issue with the Japan was that there was a nominal capital (Kyoto, a seat of emperor, the nominal, de iure ruler) and the real one in Edo (seat of the shogun - the real ruler who exercised real power). The Japan until 1868 was organised in the bakuhan system and was ruled by the shogun's administration. However the system was feudal, daimyos ruled in their own domains (under supervision of bakufu officials - somehow it might look more like Crusadier Kings mechanics). Some of the daimyo were bakufu (shogunate) loyalist, some were in "opposition" (tozama daimyo). [The game mechanics does not grasp that - those social classes are kinda monolithic - as far as I can see - this is a problem in the case of factionalism in XIX-century Japan].
There was anti-bakufu (samurai) movement, that opposed the shogun, but the political situation was not that simple.
Japan was in sakoku policy since late 1630's (isolationism). A lot of samurai were supporting that policy and were radically xenophobic. The only place in Japan where foreigners were allowed to land and trade was Dejima trading post (so... sadly there is no Dejima Dutch trade factory in the game). Also: christianity was prohibited under capital punishment.
In 1853, when Perry's expedition arrived and Japan (the bakufu) was forced to end the sakoku policy - it flamed the dissent in country among the xenophobic elites. Some Japanese ports were forcefully opened and the foreigner exterritorial enclave was established like Shimoda US consulate or Yokohama (game mechanic - it may be one of those treaty ports - as far as I can see).
The joi (expell the barbarians) conservative and xenophobic movement started to gain popularity and the emperor Komei has taken benefit of that (so there was an imperial/monarch faction in opposition to bakufu faction).
There were also some clashes with the foreigners like Shomonoseki campaigns and bombardment of Kagoshima. The result of them changed the mind of some important people and lead to the conclusion that modernization or westernization of Japan might be a necessity.
After 1860, when bakufu official, Tairo Li Naosuke (member of "modernization and pro-western faction") in was assasinated, the japanese political stage was divided into two factions: sonno-joi (Revere the Emperor, expel the barbarians) movement and bakufu loyalists. Samurai and daimyo were divided into those two factions.
Hovewer, emperor's faction more efficiently moved into modernization (at list in the armed forces area) policy - especially it was the case in Satsuma and Choshu domains (Ito, Yamagata, Saigo etc.). It doesnt mean that shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu didn't do his best in his modernization efforts.
After emperor Komei's death (who had his own political idea of kobu-gattai) the power in pro-emperor movement was taken by radical anti-bakufu faction - and it have lead to abolishment of bakufu and civil war (boshin war - between bakufu and its loyalists on the one side and pro-imperial faction on the other). During the war capital was moved to Edo, the city changed its name to Tokyo (1868). As the result of the Boshin war the bakufu was crushed, and Tokugawa house disbanded. (there was also the case of "Ezo Republic", but it's not so important).
After the war the real reforms started. There was a lot of dissent among the samurai and daimio - especially in matter of conscription law and abolishment of feudal system. So there was stil a lot of conflict (like the Eto Shimpei rebellion and seinan senso - the Saigo Takamori rebellion).
