Stealing the young girls hearts, just like Gene and Roy. These are references to Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. Two mega stars throughout the 40's and 50's. Both starred in television and movies as singing cowboys. Gene Autry is the only person in all of history to receive 5 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. You've probably heard a Roy Rogers song in passing, but you've definitely heard Gene. His recordings of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Here Comes Santa Claus are still played in heavy rotation during the holidays.
Jason has a great catalog. Flyover States and Amarillo Sky are my two favorites.

This tribute to Toby was the best one done of the ones I have seen. It was beautifully done and I think Toby would have been proud the way Jason did it. The first one done by Brooks and Dunn, Sammy Hager, and others was a joke and a disgrace. Yes, that was Toby’s son you saw in the audience with tears running down his face.
Jason and Toby were friends. One of Toby's last performances was a drop in appearance on one of Jason's concerts. They couldn't have found anyone better to sing it.
It was Toby's first hit, and man was it a hit! I remember when it came out in high school. Who was this Toby Keith dude? Had no idea how big he would become nor how much I would love his music. Never got the chance to hear him live, a great regret of mine. God we miss you Toby!!

Toby Keith was great, and Jason Aldean does a great job with this song. Just a bit slower, making it poignant. Toby Keith was a really good storyteller, and I think the fact that he worked a blue collar job before making it in music lead him to more relatable topics. Jason Aldean has a BUNCh of great songs, and he's a Georgia boy - what are you waiting for? "Dirt Road Anthem" is his starter song.
I don't remember what you have reacted to from Toby, but you might consider doing a few more. As a previous poster said, Toby's version of this is much more upbeat. I think he would have liked people to remember his lighter side on some of his songs (although he had serious ones too). Peace, Love!!

Yes, Toby came to one of Jason’s shows in 2023 to perform with him. Big influence on Jason. He was interviewed about it and said that Should’ve Been a Cowboy was a song he covered at most his shows as he was coming up in the music industry.
