What do you think, is the overheating an issue with the R8? I have also heard of much worse results with the camera, but these are the results I got in my testing
Hi there! Thanks for the video. I used my new R8 with 24-105mm EF lens to test 4K 60FPS. The room was about 18 Degree Celsius and I used Sandisk V3 (90MB/S write time) to shoot 20min 4K 60 FPS. It works fine to me with a V30 card so I wonder if I need a V60 or V90 card. Thanks.
Hi! Thanks for your comment 😊 A V30 technically should be enough for the R8, but I had major buffer issues with a V60 card, but that card has been 100% fine with other cameras with much heavier codecs, so it might have been an issue with my unit of the R8 too. But just to be sure, it’s always better to have a faster card
If possible, I’d like for you to test in full sun on a normal temperature day like 75 degrees. Sometimes, I want to record my daughter play sports outside. I’m curious to see what the experience would be like. Thanks! :)
Thanks for the video. I’m looking at the R8 and I’m coming from the m50 so I’m used to having to carry multiple batteries. Good news about the overheating in 4k 60. I normally only use 60 fps when I know I’m going to slow down the footage so it is mostly short b-roll clips. Would love to see a video testing the 60 fps in that scenario. Short bursts of recording
In my use, short bursts in 4K50 have had no issues with overheating, but I’ve seen talk about the R8 overheating even in photo mode. Not sure if it’s a firmware issue or if there are faulty units out there, but it seems like some units overheat easier than others
@@kaspergaram So you have a "normal" room temperature for this test, as it is the same "normal" as canon's 0:27. Some tests have shown that the camera heats more running on the battery than with USB-c power, where overheating is less significant.
@@blaspayri that could be, but I have had no overheating issues with battery power either. In real-world use, overheating has not been an issue for me in any way at all. But there are so damn mixed results online that I don’t even trust my own experiences anymore 😂

Hi Kasper! very nice work. I do really enjoy you stuff. Succes!! I see on internet, some youtube channel exacly, that the Canon R8 is overheating very fast, less than 20 minuts in 4k 24p. So, i'm a lil confuse! How much time you think the Canon R8 can record in 24p 4k in summer, or an hot environement, with internal battery, without overheats? Thanks a lot for the help! It seams to be a great deal this camera, and I'm curious about it! Maybe buy one on the future! Thanks a lot for the help! Succes!!!

It definitely overheats. I ordered one and tried it at home, regular home temperature. It started overheating after 20 minutes while I was just playing around in the menu and taking the occasional photo, not doing anything special. Not even trying video yet. They need to fix this. Myself I returned it.
I’ve heard that too but I can’t confirm that. I haven’t even had the temperature meter show up in stills mode. No issues for me, but i’ve seen talk about that too so it seems to be happening. It could be a firmware thing too since it is still in 1.0.0

@@kaspergaram do you know that for a fact? Your saying that 120 shutter speed does not require more in camera processing then 60 shutter speed? I think you are extremely wrong.
Imagine filming short sessions of a wedding in the sun but without a 15 minute rest between each shot for a total of about 25 minutes! This is very normal use, then the camera does not have time to cool down and overheats! then one of the most important moments of the day comes and your camera is worth nothing and has to cool down for 15 minutes. you can no longer film the moment the couple walks away from the altar between the family and the guests! you can quickly use your cheaper mobile phone to see the couple leave with the bridal car! Yeah according to a lot of comments online, it seems like there's tons of variation in terms of overheating and battery life performance with the R8, depending on the unit you got. I hope this is a firmware thing
@@kaspergaram yea but even if the firmware sorts the heating, ya still get terrible batt life. I got a band so we play for 4 hours average. So this thing is never gonna be any good, you may say get a video camera but I also shoot real estate stuff. So I’m going with the R6m2.
Most weddings, communions, parties are on location outdoors in the summer, in the middle of the heat of the day. You have no other choice this is the important moment that this camera must work without any problems! Then indoor shots where the sun shines on the camera are not a real benchmark! How can firmware solve a heat problem? It can only ensure that the protection against overheating is off. the only good solution is a fan that blows away the hot air! If the printed circuit board gets too hot in the camera, it must be cooled down with a fan, just like in a computer (see how many fans there are on a modern graphics card). In the other case, it will switch itself off if a too high temperature has been exceeded. If you now disable this protection or adjust the value via a software update instead of 80 degrees to 120 degrees, it will continue to work longer, but at what price? Therefore, using an external battery, external memory, opening all covers and screen is a small solution against a construction error!
Yes, you are absolutely correct. But we do need some kind of benchmarks to see how a product performs in comparison to other similar products, right? Personally, I wouldn’t want to keep my camera in a hot sunny spot for too long even if it was turned off all the time. It will get hot no matter what, if the sun is blasting at it. Shutting down due to overheating is a good thing in many cases, but if the camera makes itself overheat too easily, it’s not fun.
