As much as I absolutely adore and respect this band creatively and musically, the thing I’m most blown away by is that in an industry that is littered with volatile interactions, breakups, drugs, ODs, and salacious accusations/actions, the original lineup of Larry Mullen Jr, Adam Clayton, Edge, and Bono have stayed together uninterrupted for 45 years. That’s absolutely bonkers. No one in the history of rock has been able to say that. These 4 guys as a whole, and as individuals, are such a treasure.

My god - i'm not even a massive U2 fan but these two are incredibly articulate. The intelligence and character stands out a mile. Same could be said of many people in the past ie. John Lennon and Paul McCartney....

I noticed this band Inhaler last year, and wasn´t at first aware about the connection to U2, but am now. Wuavvv...what a great band and songwriting, and yeah...they sound like U2 in their early days. At the same time, I think they have over cooked their last 2 offerings by being too precise. I wish they would just spend time and jam and what ever comes out - that's it. Like Zooropa. Wasn't that written mostly on the road. Also if you listen to the cure. What I like about them is some of their latest material have long intros, basically instrumentals before you reach even the 1st verse. It's majestic, etheral.

Im blown away by this interview. U2 were my first love, and hearing Bono and The Edge talk about songs like Bad brought back my early teen years (early 90's) sitting in my bedroom with a CD player listening to U2 albums (I had them all), surrounded by walls adorned with U2 posters.

Yep! I saw them in Chicago in the 1980s and they were incredible. One of the best live performances I’ve ever seen from any band and I’ve been to a lot of ragers.

I am kind of new to really loving U2. ( I’m in my thirties for reference) Always familiar with them, and even owned a couple of albums, but never my favorite band… but a couple of years ago I was in the desert with friends. Joshua Tree specifically, and we did edibles and listened to the JT and I swear to god , I have never had such a mind blowing music experience. Good edibles I guess ! Edge’s guitar was like nothing I had ever heard even though I had legit heard it 1000 times. Now I hope I get a chance to see them tour again!

U2 is always going to be badass. It's a rare moment, these days, when class artists still have the fire running in their bellies as much as this group seems to have. At the least, U2 is what we should aspire to be like - true rock n' rollers - unapologetic. That's the point, they're going to do what they like, rock n' roll, without apologizing for it! Let's aspire have an attitude like that, eh?
What I like best about Zane's interviews with U2 is that he doesn't just go through the interview questions, but rather participates in a conversation and is not shy to express his opinions and apply his knowledge/perception to the topic at hand. Really nice to sit down and hear a conversation with the band that we all dream of doing, but are often too star struck to attempt should we be lucky enough to be in front of the artists we adore. My friend put the new record on low volume as accompaniment for our reunion after years apart on the 17th, all hearing it for the first time together, and not all of us U2 fans...it was magic.
Thank you Zane and U2 alike for blowing us away yet again with this deeply human chat. When I listen to these interviews I don't think anyone can not relate to feeling like you are a fly on the wall to artistic aspiration and human inspiration. Simply a beautiful and magical journey.

U2 got some of the best lyrics out there, I really love the way Bono write the words to their music, it's very poetic and you don't always get what's it's about. And sometimes it the opposite, very laid out. Edge describes it well too, it's about the words sounding good to the melodies.

I learned about every song from their Discography since the beginning, B.Sides and Studiobootlegs included. As a FORMER LONGTIME, LONG term fan of U2, I’ve literally just had enough of Bono, and his ALL about himself attitude, and liberal preaching of politics, when all you did was pay 💰 to see a rock concert 🎵.
@@justrelaxing2721 U2 and especially Bono has/have always been political. They have been involved with Greenpeace and Amnesty International from the early 1980s. Your comment proves you don't know the band and understand them as people at all. They are not a pop group with nothing to say beyond the songs - they are an intelligent rock band trying to change the world in you through their music and use their currency as famous individuals to make a difference in the world.
Thinking about choruses, verse-chorus-verse structure -- I've been pondering this for a long time, most of my life. Zane says "End of the World" has no chorus; I don't know what it's called, but it has a 'punctuation': every time Bono repeats "End of the World" and Edge does that guitar riff, that's what brings you back, it's the theme. Same with "In My Life" (mentioned at about 30 minutes in), there's a repetition of the theme. And, the song that really got me thinking about this 30 years ago when I was a kid, was Simon & Garfunkel's "America": though there's no chorus, every time they crescendo of "look for America!," as a listener, you know that's the key to the ongoing narrative of the song, the whole point. I think it's a cool structure. (note that these three examples of this structure are all badass songs)
One of my fave Bands U2 is great and they survive as good karma as a band cause in africa they do donation as charitable works great and its large donation not just a so so long live U2
Hope they return to their 90s spirit. First the soring progressive guitar driven sounds (hopefully titanium dance-rock) then the lyrics and finally the 4 to 5 mins songs that evolve on a live stage.

Some are "genius" from the moment the brush hits the canvas, but most of us mortals have to find our best work by doing and trying and creating over and over. Through the arduous journey you see your "genius" emerge. I feel the goal for the artist is to see their unique take develop and through that process we leave the fingerprints of our souls on this world.
@@davidpearson6346 Good point. I worked with Moby once and he said he writes 100 to 120 songs per album. I guess that shows what incredible songwriters Lennon and McCartney were when then churned out hit after hit.
I’ve been listening to them since the day one with boy has a college DJ. I think 44 years later what the world has seen that I felt in that first album.. this was a sound and a feeling and lyrics with meaning that where desperately trying to say something and then October and war they continued down that emotional.. political.. revolution.. love my friend..road each one different then onto joshua tree.. I have always lived the fact I never know what in gods name they’ll come up with.. I mean compare achtung baby to October. I have such a deep respect for these 4 friends doing something in a industry never before done in a manner that’s there beautiful life we get to enjoy .. I thank all of them and has we can all see they work harder than everyone else and the bar they set for themselves is has high has ..god.. how sweet is that..! One of the best experiences in my life and inspiring is watching these 4 brothers create magic and be so dam humble about it all..! Thank you god for these souls..!
The performance by Bono and The Edge that has moved me the the most is their recent Tiny Desk concert at NPR. Acoustic guitar, their two voices and a small choral group from Duke Ellington School of Music, just around the corner from NPR headquarters in D.C. I never appreciated Bono as much as I did listening to him in this intimate setting. I have never purchased a U2 CD because I don't care for their over-produced arrangements. You wouldn't think that one guitar, bass, and drums could sound over-produced, but their producers manage to do this by turning up the reverb and lots of overdubbing. Since I have never purchased their CD's, my reflection is based solely on their hits that got much air play and on videos of their concerts. I am really hoping that their Songs of Surrender CD will have a more "unplugged" sound, much like the Tiny Desk concert. They mentioned in this interview that their drummer is ailing. This is not a personal attack on their drummer, but, as I discovered with the Tiny Desk concert, their music sounds better without a drums. If they need some sort of percussion for a moment or two, all Bono needs to do is beat his chest as he did toward the end of one of the songs they performed at NPR.
I was also surprised by the NPR performance. It was clean, honest, down to earth, and had no fuzz. Loved the participation of the Duke Ellington School of Arts chorus...Also, The Edge's back vocals were simply phenomenal.
Hopefully in part 2, Bone and Edge can discuss the difficult decision to do these Vegas shows without Larry. That had to be hard; in a lot of ways U2 is Larry's band. He was the one who placed the ad. He got the ball rolling. A U2 show without him is as inconceivable as it would be with Edge or Bono.
In times of our searching, there is a synergistic communion, people and places, that present networks and spaces for genius. This is my two bits o' belief. Love your discussion!

Solid interview. Loved that Zane didn’t stick to the script with the questions, but pushed a little deeper in the areas of creativity and process.
Zane did a good job overall but his over sincerity and over emoting during the second half of the interview gives me the "icks"... as they say.

I’ve been a fan since I was a teenager, and this band will always have a place in my heart , there music the lyrics to each unique track it captures your soul in different beautiful moments, there isn’t a band on the planet that could achieve the sheer brilliance on Bono , Edge , Adam Clayton , Larry Mullen Jr , they have done it all ❤️👍

As a FORMER LONGTIME, LONG term fan of U2, I’ve literally just had enough of Bono, and his ALL about himself attitude, and liberal preaching of politics, when all you did was pay 💰 to see a rock concert 🎵.

@@justrelaxing2721 U2 and especially Bono has/have always been political. They have been involved with Greenpeace and Amnesty International from the early 1980s. Your comment proves you don't know the band and understand them as people at all. They are not a pop group with nothing to say beyond the songs - they are an intelligent rock band trying to change the world in you through their music and use their currency as famous individuals to make a difference in the world.

Thinking about choruses, verse-chorus-verse structure -- I've been pondering this for a long time, most of my life. Zane says "End of the World" has no chorus; I don't know what it's called, but it has a 'punctuation': every time Bono repeats "End of the World" and Edge does that guitar riff, that's what brings you back, it's the theme. Same with "In My Life" (mentioned at about 30 minutes in), there's a repetition of the theme. And, the song that really got me thinking about this 30 years ago when I was a kid, was Simon & Garfunkel's "America": though there's no chorus, every time they crescendo of "look for America!," as a listener, you know that's the key to the ongoing narrative of the song, the whole point. I think it's a cool structure. (note that these three examples of this structure are all badass songs)

One of my fave Bands U2 is great and they survive as good karma as a band cause in africa they do donation as charitable works great and its large donation not just a so so long live U2
Hope they return to their 90s spirit. First the soring progressive guitar driven sounds (hopefully titanium dance-rock) then the lyrics and finally the 4 to 5 mins songs that evolve on a live stage.
And I wish they would return to their 80s spirit.
No point in repeating themselves. They aren't interested in that. Their next idea is to do an ACDC style album

Some are "genius" from the moment the brush hits the canvas, but most of us mortals have to find our best work by doing and trying and creating over and over. Through the arduous journey you see your "genius" emerge. I feel the goal for the artist is to see their unique take develop and through that process we leave the fingerprints of our souls on this world.
@@davidpearson6346 Good point. I worked with Moby once and he said he writes 100 to 120 songs per album. I guess that shows what incredible songwriters Lennon and McCartney were when then churned out hit after hit.

I think 44 years later what the world has seen that I felt in that first album.. this was a sound and a feeling and lyrics with meaning that where desperately trying to say something and then October and war they continued down that emotional.. political.. revolution.. love my friend..road each one different then onto joshua tree.. I have always lived the fact I never know what in gods name they’ll come up with.. I mean compare achtung baby to October.
I have such a deep respect for these 4 friends doing something in a industry never before done in a manner that’s there beautiful life we get to enjoy .. I thank all of them and has we can all see they work harder than everyone else and the bar they set for themselves is has high has ..god.. how sweet is that..! One of the best experiences in my life and inspiring is watching these 4 brothers create magic and be so dam humble about it all..! Thank you god for these souls..!

The performance by Bono and The Edge that has moved me the the most is their recent Tiny Desk concert at NPR. Acoustic guitar, their two voices and a small choral group from Duke Ellington School of Music, just around the corner from NPR headquarters in D.C. I never appreciated Bono as much as I did listening to him in this intimate setting. I have never purchased a U2 CD because I don't care for their over-produced arrangements. You wouldn't think that one guitar, bass, and drums could sound over-produced, but their producers manage to do this by turning up the reverb and lots of overdubbing. Since I have never purchased their CD's, my reflection is based solely on their hits that got much air play and on videos of their concerts. I am really hoping that their
Songs of Surrender CD will have a more "unplugged" sound, much like the Tiny Desk concert. They mentioned in this interview that their drummer is ailing. This is not a personal attack on their drummer, but, as I discovered with the Tiny Desk concert, their music sounds better without a drums. If they need some sort of percussion for a moment or two, all Bono needs to do is beat his
chest as he did toward the end of one of the songs they performed at NPR.
I was also surprised by the NPR performance. It was clean, honest, down to earth, and had no fuzz. Loved the participation of the Duke Ellington School of Arts chorus...Also, The Edge's back vocals were simply phenomenal.
AMAZING STRENGTH Concerts 💪 and Caring Band!..*You just have to Experience their Presence!
Hopefully in part 2, Bone and Edge can discuss the difficult decision to do these Vegas shows without Larry. That had to be hard; in a lot of ways U2 is Larry's band. He was the one who placed the ad. He got the ball rolling. A U2 show without him is as inconceivable as it would be with Edge or Bono.
