Small f/# -> small DoF Large f/# -> large DoF ...this is so simple. And it’s not a groundbreaking statement. But the fact that you said it this way when so many others haven’t, makes you the winner of TH-cam photography tutorials.
A good teacher is one who explains a lesson so students understand not the one who confuses students with what he thinks he knows ...Big ups Chris Bray... u're one of the best photography teachers ever !!!
I could cry, I tried twice to do a photography class online and just couldn't finish it. So much theory and written for people who already understand so much of the terminology, even though it was for beginners! Aperture tripped me up, I got it eventually motivated out of spite lol. The explanations you give are so easy to understand I can't thank you enough for making me want to pick up my camera again. Bless you for putting this course up you absolute legend!!
I cannot thank you enough for the one simple thing you explained in this video... that small F-stop numbers mean small DOF and large F-stop numbers mean large DOF. I had given up on trying to understand everything about apertures and this often meant giving up on a photography course. This has helped me get excited about learning again. THANK YOU!
@@ChrisBrayPhotography Loved the mnemonic device "Think of it as f f f f f f f f leaving from your camera". That makes it soooo easy to understand depth of field with f-stops!

It's incredible how simple you make this. I'm fairly new to an actual camera and have struggled with the inverse relationships. It's a huge relief to have someone explain it in a way that actually makes sense. Do you know how many videos I have watched!?!?! Plus taking beginning photography at City College. You should get an award. I have passed this on to a friend who teaches at a CA state university. She immediately showed it to her class who said they understood aperture but their settings showed differently. I am now a Chris Bray Devotee! Thank you!!!
At 77 years old and looking for a new hobby and decided to try photography. After seeing multiple tutorials on youtube I came upon Chris Brays site. Wow, within a few videos I am now able to actually get off the automatic mode and set my Pentax up in several different ways. I can now have fun when in the Provincial Parks in our are. Thank you so much Chris. You have made an old man actually fell great about accomplishing something new to me.
You're a remarkably good teacher. Thanks so much for understanding exactly why aperture has thrown me every time I've tried to learn about it. A long row of Fs stretching out in front of me - that's what I needed. Bravo.
The Mental Gymnastics is right. You're the first photographer who got me to understand aperture without doing cartwheels in my head. Your lectures are spot on! Thanks a mil!
Chris, there are teachers, and there are TEACHERS. You, my friend, were born to be a TEACHER. You've make this topic so easy to understand, even a 2-year old would understand it better than it being "explained" by those who claim to understand photography. Thank you; I've subscribed to your channel, and I have informed my contacts of amateur photography enthusiasts to do likewise.
Wow thanks so much! That's really kind of you, and I really appreciate it. =) I hope I can find some time to make the rest soon, I've just put video #7, about ISO, on my website if you're interested! =) Thanks for helping me get the word out about them! Cheers!
