  • My 6 month look at the Bodega. Is it as special to me as when I first got it? Has the honeymoon ended? How has it held up over time and use? Also, my personal thoughts on the Blade Brothers TV show...

    I've collected knives my whole life. Want you to know we love you man! Your passion reminds me of my own. It's a great to watch you get excited about the things we all love about our knives. Getting excited about the mechanicals, the fit and finish, the way it all comes together. I'm a little older and am stunned at how much we see eye to eye on knife collecting. You cover and update us on what's new and that's a given. But what we really enjoy is watching you being yourself and the way you keep it real.

    Thanks! A friend made it for me and it came out nearly spot-on. IMO, yes... the Bodega is absolutely grail-worthy. It's still one of my favorite knives that I own hands-down, and I carry it a LOT. It fires on all cylinders: it feels great in the hand, it's not too large for an EDC, it is super sharp, uses great steel, has a funky high-tech look, flips like a dream, and has a very useful blade shape. It's is as close to perfection as you can really expect.

    wow, this was posted 4 years ago and I just watched blade brothers a few days back here in the Philippines. I totally agree with your observation about the show. I wanted to see the thought process behind the great bodega. bodega by the way here in the Philippines it's actually what we call a warehouse. nice video, beautiful knife, congratulations.

    Great video sir JS! I completely agree on your feelings about the bodega. I'm nearing the one year mark with mine and the tolerances haven't degraded one bit. Even after I changed the bearings to ceramic, lock up stayed the same as the day I got it and identical to yours. Another maker that fits the same category as Todd Begg, for me, is David Mosier.

    That knife, for me, is my We knife co. Elijah Isham designed "Eschaton." I recently bought a reate K-1 in damasteel with mokuti inlays, but I just cant get over the escaton. It honestly seems better made than the K-1. The K-1 has some sharp corners on the bottom back half of the handle, some grind marks on the blade (which are hard to see due to the damascus but they're there). Now the K-1 has a better detent, but the eschaton is smoother and easily falls closed even though there is no blade play whatsoever. My only complaint with the eschaton is the lock bar's jimping. Its very sharp and very hard on the fingers.

    If I had the cash I would without a doubt buy a bodega, I know that there are more expensive knifes out there made with more fancy materials etc etc, but the moment I saw your red handled bodega I fell in love, I don't know how it feels in the hand and sadly probably never will, but the whole design is simply beautiful, for some reason it sort of reminds me of a 1950s American sports car, I live in Edinburgh Scotland and the knife laws here are strict so its a bit harder to get hold of good knifes, although its not illegal to own any size knife you can't carry them you can only carry a knife if it doesn't lock and under 3" and even then the police can take it of you for no real reason other than you MIGHT be a danger to the public, like I'm going to go on a mad killing spree with a 2" knife, and that's another thing that gets on my wick here, when you tell people that you like knifes or if they find out they treat you like your some sort of mad axe man is something, anyway that's my rant over, LOVE THE BODEGA. PEACE.

    Thanks a lot man. Aweome. Its crazy. Smoothed out in half a day. These GTC bearings are amazing if done correctly. When/if he makes a flipper it will be insane! He was really able to make the exact blade shape that I drew and pictured in my head. Most custom guys would not even give a customer a chance to ask. Yeah I need to start talking more. thats america ,hollywood and commercialism all rolled into one , i watched this show because im a knife enthusiast, and was immediately aware this was "one of those shows" but as the first "american knife chopper" i found it thoroughly enjoyable ,because for all the fluff and bullshit , i got to see how they temper knives and stain that damascus with molten salt things i was in awe of since i was 12...................27 years later 10 mins of a 22 min episode answered those questions and i got a laugh out of antics of the two brothers.

    Yes, I did not include the Blackout version because they only made 10 for the initial run, and are all sold out. I just watched one of the Blade brothers show. The one where he creates the Reaper Cleaver, that was awesome. The skill and knowledge Todd has is amazing. He is truly a master craftsman and Artist. That Bodega looks beautiful. I was looking forward to watching the shows on TH-cam. But a fucking train wreck? should I waste my time? I was hoping to watch the process and would prefer not to watch the interaction between brother. I agree with you concerning American Chopper. Thank you for the review. If I get bored I might watch the show.

    Awesome video/review! I completely agree with what you said about 'overlooking small flaws that make you second-guess'. In my opinion I saw that happening above average in Strider reviews here on TH-cam (at least till the 4th gen). However, I personally have to disagree with your statement that Todd has nothing to do with the 'train wreck' and that it's solely a responsibility of the production team.
    That one knife for me is any Military, especially the C/F M390.

    I understand your frustrations with the show but lets be honest. If it was a "knife lovers" type of show showing the inner workings of a knife shop, outside of the relatively small number of knife lovers it would have 0 with a capital "0" viewers. This I am sure is a business decision more than anything for Todd to get exposure in a way that he can't get in any other. Todd's been through a lot(personally and finically) over the past few years so I for one am willing to cut him some slack.

    Who the hell has $1050 to toss down on a knife that isn't fully custom. I have no doubt that the knife is manufactured well, but ffs, I'm not going to spend even $500 on a knife that isn't made exactly for me. Screw that. More power to yall that have the funds to spend on that stuff.

    • @JimSkeltonKnives
      @JimSkeltonKnives  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bear in mind that a great number of today's makers do NOT allow the customer to dictate how their knife is built. Many have a pre-set way of offering their knife, or a short list of upgrade/custom options. Also remember that more and more makers are turning to waterjet/CNC, and you can very easily spend TWICE this much to buy a full, true custom knife... that has far less hand work in it than a Ti Bodega. Each Ti Bodega has about 45 hours of hand work in them, Todd told me this himself. And EVERY knife's detent, lock and action are set by Todd himself by the way. You can spend about $850 on a production knife like a Damascus Unique Sebenza, or $1300 on a Strider/Starlingear knife that has absolutely NO work done on it by Dwyer or Strider. There are many comparisons that can be drawn here. Regardless, I own 2 Bodegas now, and my "Big Red" is one of the longest running as an EDC in my collection, and is still dead on perfect in action, lockup and zero bladeplay. Haven't even had to do anything as minor as adjusting the pivot... it remains flawless over two years later.

    • @Grantherum
      @Grantherum 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim Skelton
      Perhaps that is the case, I still can't see myself throwing $800+ down on a knife. Maybe if I actually handled one of these, or something similar to it I might realize the value, and I know all knives are not equal. I was fortunate enough to handle a few knives by a fairly local master knife maker and they were wonderful pieces of work, but I couldn't see myself putting the money down at that point either, of course at that time I wasn't financially where I am today either. Maybe one of these days I'll run across someone that has a Bodega that they'd be willing to let me fondle for 10-15 mins so that I can feel the craftsmanship myself, but until then I just can't see spending the funds on a "custom" knife.
      Just because the knife is hand tooled doesn't mean it is custom, it merely means it is hand worked. Which is awesome in itself these days with all the mechanized systems they have at the mass production places... but Custom is Custom, and hand worked isn't necessarily custom.

    Another thing when he started heat treating that big chopper before he had the plates that's just total bullshit that is TV drama it's a complete amateur mistake another show just started off awesome and all about the guns were sons of guns now it's just about TV drama and then blowing shit up at the end!
    Right now I don't have a knife but I continuously go back to that is flawless I have a triple threat folder and it is full of flaws I won it in a contest or I would've been extremely pissed.

    I couldn't agree more about the tv show. That ridiculous monstrosity of a three pronged retractable arm gizmo that they jammed through the roof of a car into a crash dummy's head was the worst piece reality production I've seen in a long time, maybe ever. If I was the network executive I would have yanked it off the air after the first night. Awful. Unfortunately, I learned nothing (zero) about making a custom knife. A complete waste of time. The show really made me want to boycott Begg knives, but the reality is that I really really want a Bodega 2.0 and I'll probably order one as soon as possible.
