    My wife and I loved Tybee. We spent a day in Savannah and enjoyed the beach the rest of the time. I swear their motto is "No Free Parking on Tybee" and they mean it. Some of the meters represent multiple spots and got a ticket because we didn't realize there was a meter near by. But we learned our lesson and still had a fantastic time.

      What month is the beach not so crowded?

    • @emazing33j
      @emazing33j 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You ain’t even lying because it use to be so nice and one of the things that made it the best was wasn’t over crowded with all these obnoxious people from outta state to liter and destroy everything. Will not be long before the beaches will be so nasty and we’ll start getting warnings about the water being to high in bacteria so you have to stay out of the water. They started making movies down there and everyone and their brother is trying to be TH-cam stars that when they make their videos as well. That’s when it started, all these people from outta state want to come all the time now. Won’t be long before it’s disgusting like the other high tourist beaches. Wish people would just take care of this island that is so near and dear to the state of Georgia. But no they’ll over crowd and make their huge messes on the beach and then go back home

      Is it really bad? We are planning on Savannah on our (FL) spring break with the kids and I was thinking of a day trip to Tybee. I'll skip it if it's going to be party hardy college kids tho.

    • @Sara01977
      @Sara01977 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd do Hilton Head probably then since it's more expensive, the partying kids are likely to stay away. It's further than Tybee, so less convenient though. There is a lot to do there as well.

    Savanna native, since moved north, when we come home it is mainly in the late winter or early spring to go cycling. Christie’s has been there for forever, I will be 61 this year, and went there for fries. an a burger when little. My grandparents knew the original owner and use to ride the train to Tybee. We normally park on one of the public parking areas before Ft. Pulaski and then cycle the rest to the beach. My favorite area is around the old fort, but most of it has been sold the become homes. I have photos from the late 1800’s when a family member was stationed there.

    Hiya, Mark! Your guidance came in Extremely Handy when we traveled to Italy in April/May, and I just wanted to say Thank You. The whole Rick Steves thing seemed too....I dunno...Smug?...for our tastes, but we DID need some heads-up stuff. Also, last year at this very time of year, we were in Tybee, though being empty nesters, we were more interested in the Lighthouse than the beach---we live in Key Largo, Florida, and there's a private park in our development, so we can get our beach on just about anytime. Thanks again!

    I'm descended from the Gullah people of the South Carolina Sea Islands. The Gullahs also inhabited the Georgia Sea Islands. Barrier islands. Did you and your family explore the Gullah people's culture -- not on the mainland but among the islands? Just curious because in media, rarely are Gullah given credit for many rich cultural traditions that tourists who go there love: the baskets, the food...

    • @jocelynwolters293
      @jocelynwolters293 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mariposa Papillon ❤. I did work on Daufuskie Isl while in college. Specifically we were documenting vernacular architecture on thr island. Those buildings were built by Gullahs and their descendents. Such a rich culture and history all over the sea islands! Lucky you to be a part of that!

    This is THE only video I didn't see before I left for Tybee from May 31st to June 4Th, 2019! We stayed @ the Mermaid Cottages which were absolutely lovely, close to the beach and though larger than we needed, they were less expensive than the hotels. We had the option of eating at the cottage and that helped! There is ONE fast food chain store there! An Arby's! ONE! We found out that if you don't get seated for dinner at other restaurants by 6:30, don't be surprised if you're turned away! They had a larger than usual crowd and we were told that they were full and couldn't seat any more folks. We were also told that if you order take out and have it delivered, (which many restaurants do,) we needed to do it by 8:00 or they couldn't deliver. We actually wound up eating pizza from a less than perfect pizza shop, but they did deliver! I wish we had brought crab with us or bought crab to cook at the cottage. They had a lovely area outside where we could eat and though we had a sort of swamp directly behind the cottage, we were never bothered by bugs. We were however burned to a crisp in spite of using a sunblock that was supposed to keep us from remotely changing any other color than the one we had when we got there. We burn easy so we were concerned and did what we were supposed to and it was an epic fail! I was also taking pictures for the cottages as I do a mermaid character for charities and the like, near (NOT ON - just in case you aren't familiar - Jetties are made to shred you!) the jetty @ N. beach where they suggested the pictures be taken because the photos would look more eye-catching. Afterward, we went toward the mid area and were having a great time swimming when a sudden rip came in. The lifeguards flew a flag quickly but we weren't where we could see it. They were whistling but we couldn't hear for the waves suddenly hitting the shore. In a split second, we were being pulled out to sea. Well, I was. My husband who is very body dense knows the mechanics of swimming but his body doesn't cooperate. He sinks especially in a rip current! He was being pulled out to the jetty. I was fine floating out to sea. So out came the lifeguards! I'm floating toward the boats which could speed right over me but rather calm except for worrying about my husband being put through the jetty meat grinder. A boat even slowed down and some kid yelled, "Hey Mom, There's a mermaid in the water!" Did they help? Nope! They took pictures! They may have a video on here somewhere! So they go off. I do the only thing I could, I waved goodbye, and just waited for a little girl lifeguard the size of a kid's Barbie doll fighting the current to come to get me! I asked if someone was taking care of my husband. She assured me they were and he was fine and already on shore. I grabbed the floatation device and she says, " Wow, you're really easy to tow!" I told her I was using my tail so I was helping as much as possible. She laughed and said, "By the way, your make-up looks awesome!" I explained that I was ready for the worst-case scenario. In the event that I died, we'd save money and not need the cosmetologist! She told me I was really fun to rescue. Most folks are panicking and don't ever make her laugh she said! I thanked her and explained I was glad she enjoyed the rescue but I didn't plan on repeating the situation. She was cute as she could be. A young gentleman kept asking how I felt. You always have to worry about dry drowning of course. He said he wanted to take me to the hospital to be checked out. How did I feel? I answered, "I'm pissed! At the ocean! I'm pissed! Otherwise, I'm dandy! How's my husband?" I was worried he might need treatment but he was fine, just tired. We left the beach along with a huge group of folks since everyone was being called in. The young lady, Maddie, told me that this was a fast rip current! They don't usually come that fast!. Knowing that they can is scary! So seriously don't go too far out from shore. Watch those kids because a rip can apparently come in as close to only 2 feet of water deep. The next day, things were beautiful. We went on an enchanting dolphin tour (Shout out to Capt. Gator and 1st mate Ashley!) then left to go to the beach early enough. Afterward, we headed out to find overpriced nicknacks for us, family and friends. That was the night we headed to find food and learned the vile truth about finding food or actually, NOT finding food that easily on the island! We did a stopover in Savannah on the way home but would have loved to have stayed longer to enjoy the history, the myths and folklore of the area! We would love going back and staying long enough to enjoy both places a bit more! So, the moral of this book, learn from our mistakes and have a great time!

      Denise Jackson we spent Christmas in Provence a few years ago and loved it. Avignon and Arles were my favorites. We missed Aix en Provence but my MIL loves that town above all others. I've not been to Marseilles. We all really loved Normandy, it is moving beyond words and terribly picturesque. The Loire valley is architecturally very rich, I enjoyed seeing the chateau where DaVinci spent his last days...just to give you another choice. France has many unique regions, all worth exploring. We have videos on all these areas and more so just zip through those for more specifics. Happy travels!

    Going to Savannah next week. Arriving on Saturday afternoon and would love to go on and take kids to see the ocean that afternoon/evening. No swimming, just to eat and walk the shore.
    Have heard it is super crowded on summer weekends. So is that a bad idea? Worried about traffic and parking.
    We have lots to do in Savannah too. But also would like to go to the beach a day or two and spend some time swimming, etc. Are weekdays better for beach?
    Thanks. We are excited

    What house would you recommend to rent? Website to find them? Agency? Just wondering how to find a decent house to rent and how to get it? So if you have a link or anything or one you can recommend that would be great. I assume Ubers and Lyft is down there? Because I really don't want to drive haha.

    Thanks for telling everyone about the best kept secret on the East Coast, big mouth! Tybee is great. Of course not during spring break, - Orange Crush. But, its no the less an adorable little beach town. No corporate stores allowed there....if you want McDonalds or Starbucks this is not the place to go. Places to stay are usually rented houses and they start at $175.00 a night (and up...way up) You'll be renting a house if anything at all...they have a couple of mom-pop hotels but they are not very nice. If you need something that isn't at the local IGA (which is small) you'll have to drive in to Savannah....because there isn't a lot of shopping unless you want t-shirts. Also, there is NO FREE PARKING anywhere. And if you park without paying - and I mean - anywhere....you are going to get a giant juicy ticket or TOWED....don't do it, don't even think about. That parking money is revenue for that city and they take parking very seriously. You can not park on a side street in front of someone's home...they cant wait to have your car/truck towed....so know that going in.....

    Hi Mark! Everyone I've sent to the Crab Shack, "Where the elite meet to eat in their bare feet", has loved it. Isn't AJ's a chain? I know they have a couple o locations in Florida. The lighthouse on Tybee is gorgeous! You should have made it front and center :)

    Fun Fact Tybee Was The Place To Go Back in the 1800s for dual. Have a beef with someone. Challenge them to a dual and than head to Tybee and dual it our. Tybee is a very quirky little place. Do not expect normal. Make sure you put l;ife jacket on your kids that has a tether. The Rip current is horrible and will drag you and your especially your kids off.

      I say it is for long distance travel to spend a week. I used to live in the Atlanta area where it is a 4 hour 30 minute drive where I was with good traffic. I use to leave real early on the drive there and getting there at between 10 and 11 AM and spend a good 7 to 8 hours at the beach and driving back all on the same day every year either once or twice.
