      My dad had a stroke at 76. Guess what age I am now. I've been cutting back on garbage food and trying to eat natural food as much as possible. A stroke is scary but there are a lot of things that can incapacitate. I overdid a workout and the next day could not lift my hands to touch my head. It's amazing how crippling that is. After an MRI it's tendonitis. Slow slow healing but getting better. But that's the curse for people like us that love to build things fix things make things. Getting old losing muscle etc sucks big time. Even when younger I have no desire to rebuild massive equipment but I enjoy watching John's channel and when you can't do a whole lot anymore at least we can enjoy watching others.

    John, the hole in the socket is to line up with the BB in the end of your socket wrench, or extention. It helps to keep the socket ON your wrench or extention. Which is why you will see some socket wrenches with a button at the back of the wrench to release the spring tention from the BB. Cue the music from "The more you know" LOL

      I've never seen a socket with the detent for the ball there. All of the sockets I've used just have the detent for the ball on all four sides on the inside so you don't have to think about which way to put the extensions or sockets in. Then again I live in Europe, this might be an American thing.

    Just a tip I was shown,put a piece of copper wire in the tube about the size of the inside diameter. It keep the hole open and gives you a backer to weld. When done just pull the copper wire out as the weld won't stick to copper.

    For that line I’d have silver soldered a sleeve of larger tube over it. It’s a very quick method and doesn’t require as much heat as brazing would.
    With a jewelers torch I have fixed the spring in the back of the drivers seat in my truck without messing with its temper.

    • @rickdiego5
      @rickdiego5 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Your repair suggestion would work fine and it's something I might do but if you have a tig welder a skilled welder could easily fix that hole. He did a pretty good job with his mig welder and solved the problem with the least amount of time. I think John's repair will last the life of the machine.

    • @jatomlin1991
      @jatomlin1991 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@wolverine89893obviously the temper is going to be affected at the weld point and as far as the heat penetrated... Problem with welding on thin springs is if you get too large of an area too hot while welding it acts as an increasingly large lever once its cooled to fracture at the area where the spring steel transitions to the weld area. Folks have been using small torches to fix springs in the upholstery world for a very long time.

      It's an air line conducting turbo boost at the intake to the injector pump. It could have been easily replaced with a flexible hose sans the banjo fitting. The typical boost provided by a turbocharger is 6 to 8 pounds per square inch (psi), so high pressure is not an issue. Compare to normal atmospheric pressure is 14.7 psi at sea level.

    The hose connector hitting the block preventing the seal is really a simple fix you could do right there. You have a lathe just make yourself a steel spacer and put your copper washer on each side of it and use a longer bolt or if you couldn't get a longer bolt you might be able to turn the head so that it will go deeper through the banjo and the spacer.

    Hey John, On the oil hose that broke behind the injection pump. You can take an angle grinder with a cut off wheel and cut through the crimped on collar, pry it off and then pull the banjo fitting out of the old hose. Take the banjo fitting and old hose to your hydraulic shop. They should be able to match up the hose and using a new crimp on collar reuse the old banjo fitting. No need to cobble all the JIC fittings and hydraulic hose to make what you need. They just wanted to sell you a $100.00 hose. Permatex Aviation gasket sealer does not harden Permatex use to make a part A and part B one was hardening and the other was non hardening. To glue gaskets on a surface use 3M weatherstrip adhesive, we call it gorilla snot in the business. Hi tack and Aviation adhesives are excellent for cooling system gaskets. Using RTV or silicone on gaskets, the RTV acts like a lubricant and the gasket can squish out when you tighten the bolts. Sometimes you have to see using your fingers instead of your eyes. You make a mental picture of what you are doing, close your eyes and feel your way around. I've had to do that many times. And on breaking the mirror, you're supposed to get 7 years of bad luck but I have a good lawyer who can get that time reduced.

    • @jheissjr
      @jheissjr 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Do you have a name for hi tack gasket adhesive?

    • @LightningFabrication
      @LightningFabrication 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jheissjr Permatex makes High Tack in both brush on and spray on. The brush on had been used to seal both halves of a VW air cooled engine where there is no gasket, but both can be used on gaskets. There's another similar sealant, both brush on and spray on called Copper Coat made by K&W it's specifies high temp and contains copper. If you need RTV Sealer, the best I've ever used is International Harvester T-442 Silicone Rubber. The Gorilla Snot that I refer to above is 3M weather strip adhesive. It's more like a contact adhesive where you apply it on both surfaces, let it dry then stick them together. Works great for sticking cork valve cover gaskets to the valve cover and keeping them in place if you remove the valve cover as long as you don't use it to seal the valve cover to both the valve cover and the head. Hope this helps.

    Your fearless, how have you made it this far in life with all your fingers & toes still, you'll just take on anything. Between the injection pump rebuild and all of the maintenance you've done if you would have had an on-site case mechanic come and work on that thing it would have been a good $10 -$12,000 and even then he probably would have had to have made three trips and 6 to 8 weeks for parts in between. I'm not even at the end of the video yet but I'm pretty sure this thing should run a lot better cuz I could tell when it started up that the injectors were pretty weak on it and it was running pretty low on power so like I said in my first post that thing will have a lots of power and can dig through some stuff like you wouldn't believe if it's at good operating condition which you seem to keep everything in so excited to see how it all turns out and thanks for bringing us along on your Odyssey.

If I were making a video it would hour after hour of abject failure. This beast has had plenty of luck making itself felt, not all good. You keep working through it with the apparent patience of Job. Thanks for another interesting video!

    Jon, wow, as always, you impress me. After seeing you deal with the bolts on the back side of the fuel pump and then that oil cooler's gaskets..... I'm going to call you the Yoga Master. I was almost exhausted watching it. You do a really good job of letting your viewers see how hard it was to do. I will keep watching to see what happens next.

    As a former farmer, now retired, I'm amazed at your ability to do repairs. Your shop, especially with the lathe and your knowledge of how to weld, I just have to ask what is it you really do for a living, it has to be more than farming. I know for a farmer necessity is the mother of invention and we've made a lot of things on our farm to help us out but you have taken it to another level. I love your videos and can't wait to see this machine put back together, running and painted up! If you don't want to paint it, take to a Vo. Ag. school and let the students paint it for you. The only cost to you would be the paint and it gives the students the knowledge of how to prepare, prep and paint equipment.

    Just thought I’d throw you a hint from a dealer mechanic, on those hard to place gaskets find similar bolts and cut the heads off then grind a slot in the shaft and use them as guide bolts. You install them as studs first then put everything into place and use a screwdriver and magnet to remove the place keeper studs and replace with the regular bolts.

    So glad to hear you confirm the myth that an extension does not give an accurate torque. Lot of folks still buy into that fallacy. A note on the dipstick tube: Shorten the dipstick by the same exact amount you shorten the tube.

    • @GrantL90-xf5yy
      @GrantL90-xf5yy 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You would need to shorten the top of the dipstick for that to work, otherwise the level marks would be wrong.
      I’d imagine that wouldn’t be possible…

    • @Watchyn_Yarwood
      @Watchyn_Yarwood 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GrantL90-xf5yy And why wouldn't it be possible? Have you ever tried it? I have and it works.

    • @GrantL90-xf5yy
      @GrantL90-xf5yy 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      😂 fair enough, calm down.
      It would depend on the type of dipstick, a lot of them have the handle moulded onto the dipstick. You would struggle to take it off and put back on without making a mess of it.
      A machine of that vintage might have a more rudimentary set up and may be able to be done.

    What I have done to hold gaskets, washers and such in place is fine thread. Tie through the holes. The hole in sockets is for the ball on ratchet, extension to pop into. This helps the sockets stay on. If your tools are worn then I wrap a piece of tape around socket and extension. Works for me.

If I don't pick up a good hach or learn anything, I enjoy well done videos with a bit of humor and that seals the deal. Good to see almost a half million have joined and hopefully helps pay back for some of the work that goes into each video.

    Love to watch you work and fix these huge machines. I am a computer guy, 47, no clue why, but i love your videos. i guess its a combination of watching how things work, and your amazing way of problem solving. The same with a few others here on the tubes, like This Old Tony and more, its amazing to see how people solve problems in ways i would never have been thinking would work.

      @@kensherwin4544 That is of cause one huge reason :) But i have watched alot of makers, repair people, and everything here on youtube. I just feel some videos are way better then others. Like some people never show when something goes wrong, they feel if they hide it, it make them look better or something. I hate those videos TBH. I like when you see the real process done by a skilled person, and see everything, also the mistakes. I dont know why some people are so afraid of showing they make mistakes, its the main way we learn, we all make mistakes, even those who say they dont. their mistake is lying, and that is something i dont like.
      Also, some youtubers are very skilled, but lag explaining things, they just point at a problem and say, this part is clearly broken, lets order a new one, or maybe they even repair the part, but dont explain why it broke in the first place, or how they went about fixing it. No telling about their way of thinking, they just do it.
      Anyways, i talk too much, as always.. sorry :) have a nice day.
