Dresden is the capital city of the German state of Saxony and its second-most populous city after Leipzig. It is the 12th most populous city in Germany, the fourth-largest by area (after Berlin, Hamburg, and Cologne), and the third most populous city in the area of former East Germany, after Berlin and Leipzig. Dresden's urban area comprises the towns of Freital, Pirna, Radebeul, Meißen (Meissen), Coswig, Radeberg, and Heidenau and has around 790,000 inhabitants. The Dresden metropolitan area has approximately 1.34 million inhabitants. Dresden is the second-largest city on the River Elbe after Hamburg. Most of the city's population lives in the Elbe Valley. The city's name and most of its boroughs and rivers are of Slavic origin. Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony. For centuries furnished, the city with cultural and artistic splendor and was once, by the personal union, the family seat of Polish monarchs. The city was known as the Jewel Box because of its baroque and rococo city center. The controversial American and British bombing of Dresden in World War II towards the end killed approximately 25,000 people and many civilians and destroyed the entire city center. After the war, restoration work helped reconstruct parts of the historic inner city.
The Altmarkt is the oldest square in Dresden. The city's market square planned for founding was first mentioned in 1370 as a circulus. Later documents called market in 1400, ring in 1410, and forum in 1452. Right next to it is the Kreuzkirche, the most important sacred building in the city for centuries. After a new market was created around 1550 due to the first urban expansion, the Neumarkt at the Frauenkirche, the large, central square was called the Alter Markt, or Altmarkt for short. Together with the Neumarkt, it is one of the most important squares in the city today. The Altmarkt is well-known nationally as the venue for the annual Striezelmarkt, one of the oldest Christmas markets in the world, which has been held since 1434.

Brühl's Terrace (Brühlsche Terrasse) is a historic architectural ensemble in Dresden, Germany. Nicknamed "The Balcony of Europe," the terrace stretches high above the shore of the river Elbe. Located north of the recently rebuilt Neumarkt Square and the Frauenkirche, it is one of the favorite inner-city places for locals and tourists to walk, watch, and have a coffee.

The Schloßplatz is a city square in the center of Dresden, Saxony, Germany. It gets its name from the Dresdner Schloss, the royal residence of the Electors and Kings of Saxony, which faces the south side of the square. The Schloßplatz is further bounded by the Katholische Hofkirche, the Sächsische Ständehaus, the Georgentor, and the Augustus Bridge over the River Elbe. Dating from the 15th century, the square was destroyed in the bombing of Dresden in World War II. In recent years the buildings surrounding the square have primarily been restored so that the area has a historical character.

Zwinger (German: Dresdner Zwinger) is a palatial complex with gardens in Dresden, Germany. Designed by architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann, it is one of Germany's most important buildings in the Baroque period. Along with the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger is Dresden's most famous architectural monument. The Zwinger was built in 1709 as an orangery and garden and a representative festival area. Its richly decorated pavilions and the galleries lined with barriers, figures, and vases testify to the splendor during Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, and elected King of Poland. The Bombing of Dresden on February 13 and 14, 1945, hit the Zwinger extensively and led to extensive destruction. Since the reconstruction in the 1950s and 1960s, the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Masters Picture Gallery), the Dresden Porcelain Collection (Dresdener Porzellansammlung), and the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon (Royal Cabinet of Mathematical and Physical Instruments). The original intended use as an orangery, garden and representative festival area has taken a back seat; the latter continues to be cultivated with the performance of music and theater events.

Thank you for sharing Vladimir. My wife & I visited Dresden in September of 2022. It is hard to imagine a beautiful city, such as this, was able to rise up from near total destruction as a result of allied bombing during WWII.

@@j.valjean7287Dresden was bombed because it was a production centre for military equipment and a rail-hub for military transport.
@Coltnz1 Nonsense. It was the historic city centre that was carpet-bombed, there of course was no industrial production. Dresden wasn't bombed the whole war, only in February 1945, 3 months before the end of the war, when Soviet troops were already on German soil and the outcome of the war war was already obvious for quite a long time.
3 weeks later the Allied bombed heavily the historic city centre of Würzburg, the so-called "Franconian Prague" back then. Also there was no military purpose. It was only about destroying as much as possible of historical German architecture and thus crushing the _German spirit_ once and for all.
With Dresden there was of course also the goal to kill as much people as possible, as the city was overcrowded with refugees from Silesia.
