Really good to see someone taking a balanced view on this vehicle. Appreciate not the most efficient vehicle but definitely the symbol of DW. A nice model. Also not all primaris as veterans still play a key role in the force. Agree around PoftMS.
As you mentioned the biggest frustration with the Corvus is it’s lack of the Power of the Machine Spirit rule. You aren’t typically sitting around too much so usually you are hitting on 4s. IMHO it’s the best looking flier in 40K, and therefore it makes it into my DW list based on rule of cool alone despite its shortcomings.
I have recently bought my first 40k Army, them being Deathwatch. I made a 3000 point list before I started buying models and 2000 points of them revolve arround just almost pure veterans flying arround in 3 blackstars. Then the other 1000 points is 20 teriminators with a terminator captain and terminator librarian.
I use my Blackstar as a suicide bomber. It's loaded up with a mix of heavy thunder hammers, storm bolter/shields, a biker to pick and choose my targets, and a Watchmaster to make sure those hammers hit. I fly it right for exposed characters or dangerous weapon platforms and destroy/cripple them. Blackstars on turn 1 have proven to be a pain to remove. If it lives then I have a plane that can hurt most targets backed up by a Watchmaster from turn 2 onward. If it dies then my Kill Team bails ready for action. Meanwhile the rest of my forces are moving up mostly unhindered while the plane acts as a fire magnet. Usually by the time it's destroyed the rest of the army is in place and taking apart their own targets.
Also I just found that if you do the auto explode on it it causes more damage that way then it ever could. Edit never mind I didn't realise you couldnt
The infernum Halo is a must...fantastic against repulsors and eldar. The Big Guns never tire, chaplains and combat doctrines definitely improved the blackstar's performance. I plan to start it near a chaplain if possible and give it +1 to hit. Send it forward on my turn with Big Guns strat. If I can land it near a drop pod with an HQ, I can try for some rerolls. So everything hitting on 2's, and with combat doctrine, the twin assault cannons and missiles get the extra AP. The blackstar missiles are pretty solid for a pure anti-infantry and anti-air, but those storm strikes are going to be good for trying to hit long range or indirect platforms. For transport, I'm gonna stick a fairly cheap Vanguard Vet unit for a turn 2 move and charge. If the transport is still alive, throw that guy in hover and blast away at what I can while the rest of the army pushes up. So fun to use, I just wish it didnt go down so quickly. Vengeance of the Machine Spirit would have been a cool strat to use if it applied, and may have pushed as more of a competitive choice...outside of the normal wishes of POTMS or strafe.
Honestly I love having corvus in my lists. I play competitive up to 4 times a year however people I play friendly games with rarely pull any punches and corvus almost always performes well, taking a turn of enemy heavy fire to take it down let's rest of my list push forward and score important early points. Would love having PotMS but corvus is still my favourite unit in DW.
I ran the Blackstar when I first bought it with some bad results. Prehaps I should give it another shot. Anyone out there liking the idea of putting a storm bolter, chain sword kill team and a Chaplin on board? Maybe even a terminator or two. At least then when you drop off the kill team they can shoot and charge or survive a charge.
It sounds great and in fluffy games it's possible. Competitively speaking, this model is garbage. Anyone worth their salt will shoot this PoS out of the skies t1 to force you to foot-slog your troops. Also, despite what they say, the points cost of the model is far from reasonable considering it dpesnt hav PotMS or strafing run. It is flat out garbage
I have this same problem with my Repulsor executioner. Great firepower, can move and shoot twice without penalty at half distance, transports primaris.. but its expensive as hell and that 3+ save with no invulnerable save makes it extremely vulnerable and any player worth their salt blows it off the table before you can even use it if they get the first turn. If I dont get the first turn then it is a total waste of points.
@@badbishop1049 Unfortunately in Deathwatch we don't have a lot of good anti-vehicle options. I've been using the Executioner just as a gun platform. Of course it depends on what you are playing against.
@@MrSalouro11 I've felt that way about it too. It has usually gotten wrecked turn one. The are better models like a levithan, that have better survivability and cover potential. Deathwatch are great at a gun line and I'd rather deep strike than transport. Hell, even a drop pod might be better.
Nice video, shame that the Blackstar isn't that good. A little question about Ultramarines. Which are their best choices of Anti-Tank? I usually run 10 rapid fire Hellblasters but I often find them a little underwhelming. Is it possible to have decent anti-tank fire by just pumping a huge amount of bolter shots?
In the unholy quartet of troops, tank, artillery and aircraft. Artillery generally is the counter to tanks and troops. Your next option would be your own tank(s). For troops, devistators and eleminators provide good fire support without killing themselves, but they are dependent on how they are delivered.
I love the model but it needs the machine spirit there is no reason to take it away from its initial roll out. Other than that it looks ace it just suffers being over expensive and hitting like a guards man on the move for a mobile unit sucks for the cost.
I hate this model and still think it is by far one of of not THE shitiest model we have access to. I deeply respect the unbiased way tou went about this though.
Hmm, Corvus "Bait Star"? Don't use it to deploy troops? Fly it out, hit some troops and vehicles, enemy shoots it up and ignores other things for a turn? Expensive bait. I am just too craven to put guys in it. Seems like if it is transporting or not it will get the enemies early game focus of shooting. But I am new. Only started Warhammer because of cancer and don't work anymore. Done more modeling and painting then playing. Does that mean I am still "hobby" official yet? Are there others that just build and paint more than play?
I have thought putting a biker squad into the blackstar to be launch like long range hyper angery missiles would be the most metal way to have bikers.

Although it doesn't get Mission Tactics, it can benefit from reroll 1s to wound from the Tome of Ectoclades if I remember correctly.

I like the Blackstar for transporting a Fragcannon/Shotgun-Kill-Team with Artemis and his holy granade.
I'm considering buying this model.
I don't even play DW (or "good" marines for that matter)

Diamond geezer 🙏🏻 keep up the awesome work mate
For such an eye-popping and iconic model... I'm so sad that it underperform the way it does.
This is currently the crown Jewel of my army.

a yes air to air covid rockets XD
I know this is a old video , but could anyone tell me if this would be a viable transport for a inquistion army. Not just death watch

I was going to ask for this! Been wondering what was the best way to got with it
Leave it at home competitively-speakig
Take it you can't use im this for say Ultramarines?

The covid warhead does pretty good damage against infantry blobs I’ve heard
You would be mistaken. It CAN do work if you have a rabbit's foot buried up your ass. That it does the mortal wounds on 6s counts against it
MrSalouro11 what if the units have a pre-existing condition?
@@angelobatista7005 well played sir. Well played

MrSalouro11 model or datasheet? I think most people love the looks and hate the rules.
