Chorkor is right. So my advice is that when u want to open a bank account as a visitor, all you need is your international passport, nothing else. Walk into any TD bank or Scotia bank and right away your account will be opened.
Also, if u need a photo ID in Canada, u either apply for the provincial ID or drivers License. You cannot have both. You can easily walk into any registry and apply for the provincial ID with your international passport. They will make copies and return your passport to you. However, if u apply for a drivers licence, you will have to write a test, when u pass, u will be required to surrender your home licence before you can be issued a drivers license. So what chorkor is emphasizing is that if you want to drive in Canada, then u don't have to apply for the provincial ID . If you do, maybe for your convenience sake, any later you need a drivers license, you will have to surrender your provincial ID together with your home license before the drivers license will be issued to you. So my advice is that if you do not urgently need a Canadian photo ID, take your time and work on your driver's license. Otherwise it will be a waste of money to get the provincial license first, and then later surrender it for your driver's license.

If you don't have an ID (Citizen and Non Citizen Card) issued by National Identification Authority (NIA), you can't open a bank account. So it's not a surprise to me that some banks in Canada will require a Canadian issued ID in addition to your passport to open an account.
