Pakistan has an energy surplus. Here’s why 230 million people are affected by blackouts anyway

  • In January 2023, much of Pakistan’s population of nearly 230 million people plunged into darkness, bringing widespread disruption to people and industries for almost 24 hours.
“If you go to our government hospitals - which didn’t have back-up facilities - or field hospitals, or small nursing homes, they had to stop all their services,” said Dr. Shayan Ansari, a surgeon at a private hospital in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad.
A similar incident struck last October. Meanwhile, smaller blackouts regularly hit cities and villages for several hours daily.
But the problem is not energy supply.
“We don’t have a problem as far as the supply of energy is concerned in Pakistan,” said Ishrat Husain, who served as an advisor to ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan. “Both outages were caused because there were fluctuations on the transmission lines, which have not been updated for quite some time.”
In 2020, nearly 20 percent of Pakistan’s energy was simply lost during transmission, distribution and delivery.
Pakistan’s energy problems are having a cascading effect on the country’s economy, which is on the verge of collapse. Watch the video above to find out more.

Britain created the dysfunctional state of Pakistan as part of an Anglo-Muslim alliance comprising of Turkey, Iran, Iraq [CENTO, SEATO, Baghdad Pact]) to counter the atheist Soviet Union and continue Britain's imperial fantasy of The Great Game (renamed as the Cold War). The Royal Grand Indus Army that owns, occupies and ru(i)ns Pakistan maintains Britain's imperial legacy and enforces British messianic ideology (foreign policy) of everlasting hostility towards Russia in Afghanistan and Indus valley for a fistful of $$$ and a few $$$ more. The education and health is free, and there are thousands of government schemes making sure that everyone is not hungry. You're forgetting one fact about the most recent power outage. Rather than a decentralised grid, our entire national grid is centralised. When one area goes, the whole grid goes out. It was done to favor power supply to punjab, but didn't change once the "one unit" system was abolished and provinces became somewhat self governing. Also, there are other power generation plants in locations that haven't been linked to the grid as of yet and are currently delayed because of political strife between parties in the provinces. Ultimately the root of the problems here is political corruption and a mass electorate that has practically given up on the idea of a better future with the leadership incharge. The solution should be government, but the gonvernment hasn't been ingood hands since... who knows when. Well before my time.
