2024 Praemium Imperiale Laureates announcement in Berlin, September 10【Official Video】

  • The 2024 official press announcement of the recipients of the 35th Praemium Imperiale in Germany was held at the Japanese-German Center in Berlin (JDZB), on September 10. The event was hosted by the International Advisor to Praemium Imperiale from Germany, Prof. Klaus-Dieter Lehmann and by JDZB’s Secretary General Dr. Julia Münch.
    The 2024 Praemium Imperiale Laureates were announced to the German public and among them attending was the daughter of the late 2006 architecture laureate Frei Otto: architect Christine Kanstinger who elaborated on this year's architecture laureate Shigeru Ban.
    In an interview with International Advisor Klaus-Dieter Lehmann, Christine Kanstinger shared her expert thoughts on Shigeru Ban and insights on the special relation between him and her father.
    By screening photos and bringing a portable grid model, she vividly illustrated their cooperation and joint approach.
    In an animated talk with another guest on the podium, Alexander Liebreich, Chief conductor of the Orquestra de Valencia and member of the German nomination committee for Music, shared his thoughts on 2024 music laureate and friend, Mria João Pires.
    An expert introduction, yet with episodes and laughs, on the 2024 laureate of Theatre/Film, Ang Lee, and on his long-lasting relations with the Berlin Film Festival was held by National nomination committee member Prof. Dieter Kosslick, former director of the International Berlin Film Festival.
    The remaining 2024 laureates of Painting, Sophie Calle and of Sculpture, Doris Salcedo as well as the recipients of this year’s Grant for Young Artists, the Komunitas Salihara Arts Center were briefly introduced by International Advisor Klaus-Dieter Lehmann along with all artists’ video profiles.
    Attending the event were about 80 members of the arts community and several guests of honour - such as the 2023 architecture laureate Francis Kéré, the vice-president of the Berlin Academy of Arts, Mr. Anh-Linh Ngo, the Japanese Envoy, Mr. Kunihiko Kawazu, the Ambassador for Asia-Pacific of the Foreign Ministry Dr. Martin Thümmel, former Ambassador and brother of the late former International Advisor Dr. Otto Fraf Lambsdorff, the former Ambassadors of Germany in Japan, Volker Stanzel and Hans Carl von Werthern as well as other diplomats attended. Various arts collectors, gallerists and architects, joined the event; among them about 10 media representatives.
    The announcement event was followed by a reception in the atrium of JDZB where guests could enjoy the just opened photo exhibition “Light and Flavour of Japan” by photo artist Donata Wenders which also includes works of her husband, 2022 Praemium Imperiale laureate Wim Wenders.
