- A tribute to one of Akira Kurosawa's masterpieces, a challenging movie supported by an impeccable cast, led by a spectacular Toshiro Mifune and the always perfect Isuzu Yamada.
I remember watching this movie as a kid and I was terrified by the scene where the lady washed her hand over and over because she could see the blood she had spilled and screaming "It won't wash off" over and over.

Scary, grandiose and powerful video, I understand fully why our Kozintsev (King Lear and Hamlet director) was so mad about Mifune and Kurosawa.
Thank you very much! I tried to show the sinister atmosphere of this remarquable movie without saying too much of the plot (that's why the most iconic scene of the movie is not in the video). The artistic direction of "Throne of blood" is amazing, this movie is truly a masterpiece and it was one of Toshiro Mifune's favorite roles. Isuzu Yamada is incredibly subtle, sometimes not moving one muscle and still able to communicate emotion. I wanted to honor this great actress the same way I honor Toshiro Mifune for his incredible performance in that movie.
Some critics say "Throne of Blood" was the best film adaptation of Macbeth, which I basically agree to. Personally I score Polanski's Macbeth nearly as high as this one, though Mifune's character and physical fitness was more advantageous to play an intrepid warrior like Washizu, than Jon Finch's Macbeth.

Yes, indeed, the way Kurosawa filmed this desolate place is remarquable. Isuzu Yamada gives one of her most impressive performances, not moving AT ALL or so little...She's amazing. And Toshiro Mifune, so full of opposite feelings, so tense, so dark! He's truly fascinating. It was certainly one of his most tiring roles, but alose one of his favorites.

Thank you for your comment! Yes, it's true that this movie is very dark and tense. Both actors give stunning performances ( It was one of Toshiro Mifune's favorite roles). And when you consider the 3 movies he and Isuzu Yamada played together in 1957 ("Throne of blood", "The lower depths" and "Shitamachi"), you can see how incredibly talented those two actors were. I also love the artistic direction and cinematography in "Throne of blood", so I tried with this video to honor the two main actors but also the atmosphere of the movie, which is truly unique.
Incredible movie one has to watch at once. The video is rendered even more powerful by the music. Thanks a lot for this upload

Cette vidéo m'a demandé beaucoup de travail, notamment afin de parvenir à faire marcher les personnages en rythme avec la musique, mais aussi en ce qui concerne les effets sonores (vent, roulement de tonnerre...). Ce film est un grand chef d'oeuvre en effet. La production artistique est remarquable, la construction des décors sur les pentes du Mont Fuji fut très difficile. C'était l'un des rôles préférés de Toshiro Mifune, l'un de ses plus intenses. Et Isuzu Yamada, qui interprète son épouse, est fantastique. Ils ont joué ensemble dans 3 films cette année 1957, des rôles extrêmement différents qui montrent l'étendue de leur talent. Si vous souhaitez voir de grandes scènes issues de films rares (parfois jamais présentés hors du Japon), je vous invite à regarder mes vidéos sur la collaboration de Toshiro Mifune avec les réalisateurs Inagaki, Kurosawa, Taniguchi et Okamoto (surtout la seconde partie pour cette dernière, après 3 min de vidéo environ et jusqu'à la fin), ainsi que celle sur "Animas Trujano", son film mexicain, l'un de ses meilleurs rôles, et la "bande-annonce" pour "Duel dans le Pacifique", de John Boorman. Ce sont mes meilleurs montages. Le prochain concernera un autre film de Kurosawa, qu'il tourna juste après "Le château de l'araignée": "La forteresse cachée". (n'oubliez pas de mettre un petit "like" en-dessous des vidéos, cela aide à les faire remonter à la surface, mon but étant de faire découvrir cet immense acteur. Je ne gagne pas d'argent avec ces vidéos, il s'agit juste de partager). Thank you very much for your comment! Yes, it is one of my favorite too, along with "Rashomon" and "Red beard" for the black and white cinematography. I tried to honor this masterpiece with my video. The next one will be about "The hidden fortress". Then, I will come back to Okamoto Kihachi and his fantastic "Samurai assassin".
After the filming of this movie, Mifune remembered the last scene in which he was shot with an arrow while drinking at his home, and he gradually became angry with Kurosawa for making him take such a risky shot. Mifune got a shotgun in his hand and came to Kurosawa’s residence. He shouted “Come out, Kurosawa!” in front of the house.

Thank you for your comment. I decided to use another music because my intention was to show the atmosphere of this incredible movie to people who had not seen it. I didn't want to spoil the story but also the score, so unique. That's why I've chosen a "modern" music instead of the original soundtrack.

If you want to see my other best works about Toshiro Mifune's carreer, please watch the videos about his collaboration with directors Kihachi Okamoto, Hiroshi Inagaki and Senkichi Taniguchi. Also the "trailer" for "Hell in the Pacific" with Lee Marvin, a great but underrated movie.

The purpose of this video is to present this masterpiece to people who never heard about it. Of course I know that it is based on Noh. But there was no point in using the original score with my own edit. That's why I used another music. I didn't intend to disrespect Kurosawa Akira's work. On the contrary. I understand that you don't like my work. Just know that it took me more than 50 hours to make this video. I do not earn money with it. I did it especially for non-japanese audiences because this movie is a masterpiece and should be watched by more people.
