    Given the Doctor spends so much walking around outdoors, perhaps they should have called this "The Power of Stroll".

    While I wish 6 had more to do, I still really enjoy this story. His interaction with Davros is one of the best especially because of "consumer resistance" line.

    While this is fairly minor, Lilt and Takis (the pair you read as a couple) would've died without the Doctor. Plus upon learning of their love for flowers, he gives them advice on turning Necros flora into food as a means to help with the Galactic famine, something which Davros exploited as means to gain a foothold of power turning the human rejects into protein, both elements which were foreshadowed in part during their walk.

    I can't stop thinking about how unceremoniously they introduce the Daleks in this one. They just cut to a Dalek sliding past the camera while Davros watches television.

    One of my all time favorite classic series stories. The background characters are fleshed out better than in a lot of other stories, especially Jobel, Tasembeker, and Orcini.

      I think you're misremembering. They just threw a blue cloak over his usual thing. Though this would be the basis for the all-blue variant down the line in other media.

    You also have Colin Spaull as the shorter of the two attendants(Lilt) who was Mr Crane, John Lumic’s right hand man in Rise of the Cybermen and The Age of Steel.

    So, two things. One, this is the way it is because it's a stealth adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's The Loved One, which is a satire about the excesses of the American funeral industry. Mr. Joyboy becomes Mr. Jobel, a lot of other names are parallel and Daleks happen. Second... the guy with the half-melted face in part one was almost played, and this isn't a joke, by Sir Laurence Olivier, who approached the BBC about appearing in Doctor Who, and whose agents said "Well, it needs to be within this time frame, and he'd only be free for two days tops" and.. that was the only part that fit the bill. It didn't work out for some reason.

    Tbh I really like this story. I like the fact that the world feels fleshed out and alive. I personally feel that all the storylines kinda lead together quite nice.
    It’s a shame you don’t like it. I think it’s a cool, dark and well paced story. I did grow up with it as a kid which is probably nostalgia talking. So you have made me aware to things I haven’t considered which is nice.
    But you can tell Eric Saward was trying to sabotage Colin in this by having him not directly impact the plot.

    I feel that the Davros Big Finish audio is a good middle point between Resurrection of the Daleks and this story.
    Also were ALL of the Daleks Davros made in this episode get destroyed or did Davros retrieve some of them after becoming Dalek Emperor to bolster is faction's numbers?

  • @callisto8413
    @callisto8413 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The glass Dalek, if I remember right, was an idea from a earlier story and got shoved into this one. So, when you say there seems to be a lot happening, you're kind of right. It was just piled on.

  • @Yan_Alkovic
    @Yan_Alkovic ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah this episode is zany and all over the place but I love it for that. It has a great atmosphere and it's lovely to watch and turn off your brain to in order to just enjoy the glorious clusterfuck of all these random things happening alongside each other. I also like to think that some of them happened in parallel and you can just imagine those scenes playing out on different levels of the building!
    But can I point out how silly it was that they had a slab with the Doctor's face on it? Like, how did Davros even know that the Doctor looked like that?

    • @ftumschk
      @ftumschk ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Apparently, the slab with the Doctor's face on it was John Nathan-Turner's idea, so Eric Saward duly included it in his script. He never found out why JNT wanted it included.

    The so-called "fat-shaming" is just an example of basic UK friendly banter. The more you like someone the more you insult them, basically. It certainly feels like matey teasing rather than anything intentionally cruel. Obviously, from a non-UK perspective, it comes across as nasty, but it genuinely isn't. I suppose we're more irreverent with each other and about things in general than you are in the US.

    • @BreakRoomofGeeks
      @BreakRoomofGeeks  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would contest that the 6th Doctor and Peri's relationship (from when I've seen it) has never come across as "matey."

    • @andrewbowman4611
      @andrewbowman4611 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BreakRoomofGeeks As I say, it's more common in UK friendships to mock one another or call each other names than you might think. It's certainly true that me and my mates, and I can assure you it's true up and down the country, trade insults and hurl abuse at each other on regular basis. It's definitely understood to be a sign of affection. Words you may find offensive are terms of endearment over here, I promise you.

    • @Rik77
      @Rik77 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe it was like that in the 80s, but I'm British and in 2023 I'm not aware people use fat language for matey ribbing. I certainly wouldn't like a friend doing that.

      @@Rik77 And that's you, and I don't generally poke fun at people's weight or anything like that, but I am aware that some people do do it to other people who are fine with it. It depends on the nature of the friendship, I suppose.

  • @secretsymphony
    @secretsymphony ปีที่แล้ว

    You have to understand, as I'm sure you do, that societal values change depending on both time and location. "Fat shaming" just wasn't considered. If someone bullied a person for their size, it would be unacceptable, but light banter was acceptable. The Doctor and Peri's interactions were intended as comic relief.

    • @BreakRoomofGeeks
      @BreakRoomofGeeks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm fully aware of that. But neither myself nor any other credit should be required to view a work solely through the lens that would have been prevalent at the time. I'm a millenial watching it in the 2020s. That's the perspective I have, and I'm not going to lie and say I didn't have the reaction that I did. I know it was meant to be funny. But it isn't. Even without the body shaming angle, I don't find berating someone who is meant to be your friend in a way that does come across as playful to be funny.

    • @secretsymphony
      @secretsymphony ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BreakRoomofGeeks Yeah, sure, that's your editorial choice. I just found it surprising that you have taken such an approach. I read old novels from the 1930s in which they use language now deemed offensive, particularly the N-word. I just see past it.

    It's been a few years since I've seen this one, but I do remember liking it. I picked up the new Target novelization when it first came out in hardback, but haven't had a chance to read it (and now it's packed for storage so we can get our place ready to sell, so it's gonna be a while before I can). I saw it prior to seeing Voyage of the Damned, so all I could think of with Clive Swift was Richard from Keeping Up Appearances. IIRC, the Doctor's there under false pretenses, to pay respects to someone he knew who died, but that's just so Davros can get to him. I loved the costumes for both the Doctor and Peri in this one - a one-off change from Colin's standard, and Peri got to wear something that wasn't a glorified bathing suit or a very fussy 'historical' costume.
    My first Colin Baker stories were Trial of a Time Lord, and they endeared both the Doctor and Peri to me immediately. Not sure if you've seen any of those yet, but I'd recommend them in a heartbeat. I know people say the trial bits can get tedious, but I don't find them to be such - I enjoy Colin and Michael Jayston chewing scenery at each other with Lynda Bellingham trying to maintain a semblance of order. Trial was one of the first VHS tapes I got of any Doctor Who, so I've seen it more than the other Colin stories. I think I've only seen Revelation a couple of times.

    How do you beat the Daleks? ROCK 'N' ROLL!
    I personally much prefer ressurection to this, but that does also have 5, Tegan and Turlough which is like one of my favourite TARDIS teams and it also has one of the best companion exits in Classic Who (if not THE best) so it was always going to be a hard fight.

    I feel like this story doesn’t work for some people because they don’t click with the characters. I feel that’s the reason why our Council Runner doesn’t care for it that much.
    I however love the characters! 😅 I think they’re brilliantly written, are super interesting & have great dynamics. I don’t think the story’s convoluted & I’ve kept up with the plot ever since I first watched it when I was 8. It all comes down to characters however. If you don’t care for them than this won’t work for you

    It's def one of the 6th doctor's better stories, but it's pretty grim and off putting. And doesn't help that that doctor and peri spend the entire first half walking to the main location.
    I'd give it a 6/10

    While I didn't like the Doctor calling Peri fat AT ALL (both because I don't like him judging people that way and also because she's very obviously not), I always took this clip (and her response of stepping on his face and calling him "Porky" in response) as an illustration of their sibling-esque relationship. Cos I am skinny as a stick and my brother has called me fat numerous times over the years, and my response is always much like Peri's was. Totally agree with you in wondering why the writers had it out for Peri so badly. The poor woman has one of the worst travel experiences in the show, and then the way she was written out was just as brutal and, for me, even more earth shattering than Donna's. But, despite its faults and the terrible production conditions going on with the BBC, I actually greatly enjoy this story and the Sixth Doctor era in general. (But the darker story lines and the ruthlessly high body counts don't bother me very much. I always assume in older episodes with lower on-screen counts that plenty of people are dying that I don't see.)

    I do like this story, but I think I noticed something (I could be wrong here).
    The script editor, Eric Saward, did not like that Colin Baker was not auditioned for the part, he was cast out of the blue. Also, the working relationship between Saward and Executive Producer John Nathan-Turner was just deteriorating (which reaches its zenith the season after this).
    I suspect that Eric Saward was channeling all his resentments at Colin, JNT, and the show into writing this story

    • @Alfje17

    I watched this when it was first transmitted. The pacing of the season overall is a little off but to make things worse the international version of Revelation of the Daleks at the time was re-cut from a 2 parter to a 4 parter! Admittedly season 22 isn't the best but I prefer it to season 23. There are some great characters in this as well as great direction from Graeme Harper who is the only person to have directed episodes of both classic and nu Who. Maybe another draft of the script with better pacing could have improved the story but then again hindsight is a wonderful thing...

    Peri is, as you say, not even chubby, let alone fat. On the other hand, she's very standoffish and unlikeable, so I don't mind seeing her suffer (rather her that Miles O'Brien).

    I haven't seen Revelaton of the Daleks in literal decades. I'm always getting it confused with Remembrance. Do you mean Alexei Sayle? I didn't really like his performance as the D.J. It fellt stilted and forced. You're right about, Peri. I think she copped it the worst out of any classic era companion. I liked Colin Baker's Doctor, but he was done so dirty by the writers and the BBC. I think the best story of his was Mark of the Rani.

    I preface these comments by admitting that I am notorious at remembering names. That fact coupled with not having watched this episode for many years because I didn't like it, I add a couple of thoughts. I hated Alexei Syles' portrayal of the completely obnoxious d.j. And cheered when Jenny Tomason's character killed Mr. Jobel, possibly because I loved her turn as the sweet scullery maid Ruby on the original Upstairs, Downstairs. No one is allowed to be that cruel to Ruby!
