      I live in Italy and when i came out to my parents as transgender ftm they had the same reaction. They thought only transgender women existed, and not the opposite. I still find it funny when my father said "do you even know what the transsexuals are?". And i find it funny how they think i'm a butch lesbian now. It's good to know that in America people know about ftm existence though.

      I came out as bisexual to my family. My dad's side(Italian) weren't great about it but it wasn't terrible. But my mom's side(white American), who I already knew was homophobic, really hurt. I can't imagine how much worse it would be if I transitioned. Why does US culture just seem so... unprogressive? Like I notice it's the worst in the country for some reason, but after moving to the city I still get it. I guess it's not as bad as most countries where I would be burned at the stake or something, but still I expected more from a country who stands by "all men are created equal". I just learned that unlike transmen whose voice gets deeper because of hormones during transition, transwomen have to practice their voices to sound they way they want it, if they don't like their voices or don't find it "feminine enough". The hormones change it just a little for transwomen.

    • @flame-ks5wc
      @flame-ks5wc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +365

      that's actually not true! The key factor here is time: if you start hormone therapy with testosterone after puberty the voice can still drop, whereas if estrogen therapy is started after puberty (so after the voice dropped already) the hormone therapy cannot change the voice that much anymore. If estrogen is started before the voice drops or a puberty blocker is used then the effects of estrogen are just as big as those of testosterone

    I live in America, and I have a friend from Korea who came to my school in 2021. I’m a trans guy, i haven’t really gone on Testosterone because I’m 13 and my parents aren’t that supportive of me. however, i still try to present as masculine as possible (even though you don’t owe an ounce of masculinity to be a valid man!!!). with that said, my Korean friend continuously misgendered me, and i suppose I wasn’t as masculine presenting as I thought I was. So I told him politely and tried to explain that I went from being a girl to a boy because that’s who I am. and I think he took it as a joke because I’m usually a joking person, but I was trying to be serious. He still didn’t understand. The issue was not the language barrier, but I think it was a cultural difference. The girl with the trans man in this video seemed shocked and explained she had never heard of it, so it must not be openly talked about in their media. usually people in western countries think that this is insensitive and ignorant on their end, but it’s not entirely their fault.

    • @moonmaiden71
      @moonmaiden71 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      I think you may be right.
      From what I have learnt, Sth Korea is very conservative; and by that I mean, their social behaviour is focused more on politeness, respect for elders and restraint from public displays of affection, anger, or any extreme in emotion.
      They possibly don't have any broad education or understanding of differences between cis or trans gender or the range of sexual orientations & the differences between those terms. And because they're not a demonstrative culture, it probably doesn't come up in conversation unless someone in the family is suffering dysphoria.
      For the same reason, it's not likely to be discussed outside the home without much anxiety and social stigma.
      Those who've never been exposed to, or educated about a thing can sometimes have difficulties comprehending the internal anguish & dysphoria you go through when they misgender you, or laugh at you when you're being serious. It's akin to being bullied, though they might not be intentional in harming you, that's the outcome anyway. 🥺
      Given you're quite young still that makes it even harder for you as your hormones will be surging in all the wrong places, making you even more sensitive to rejection and bullying. Sadly, I'd advise you to try avoiding that friend until they've developed a bit more maturity. 🤨
      I hope you are able to keep strong in your sense of yourself until you're old enough to make a more complete transition; regardless of what your parents think. I'm old enough to be your parent and I know many older (less open minded) cis people, have trouble understanding what dysphoria feels like. Unless they've experienced something similar, or been educated to empathize, it's just not something that was considered as being part of what might be discussed during the sexual education of teenagers up till about 20 years ago. So your parents reticence may be fuelled by lack of understanding, lack of education (which they'd have to seek out for themselves), or it may be because they think 1/ you're not old enough to know what you know 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2/ they're not ready for you to take a leap you may regret later (because they can't really see or accept the way you feel & they will regret it).
      🏳️‍⚧️🙏🏽💗🏳️‍⚧️
      I could adopt you, but you'd have to move to Australia 😆

It makes people more sheltered and less award of the outside world\the diverse people in it. Also it has raised depression rates and people are less kind when they are suffering. When we had a pride parade where I live earlier this month, they mentioned that during Covid they lost progress for progression, they weren't able to do any pride parades during Covid so they were less visible so they think being less visible played a part in that.

It's the oldest trick in the book to try and normalize a hierarchical society .
      If we are to have a society supposedly based on equality - based on the worth of people's characters, and not their immutable characteristics - then there's no place for intolerance, sorry to disappoint you. Yes, you have the right to be as intolerant as you want, but the rest of us who believe in an equal society - who believe in the right of people to be left to live their lives without being subjected to feeling inferior, or undesirable - we get to be intolerant of your intolerance. What I’m saying is telling ppl they have to tolerate these things and just accept it because its gonna breed equality is everything you just described me to be. I can sit and talk to a trans person doesn’t mean I hate them. I see people as people that’s it. in times of violence stronger people can easily overpower, ignore and abuse the weak. The men being stronger are just better at exercising violence, so if violence predominates society, it's easy for the stronger to take power a decide how society should be run. Then, even if the violence goes down, the bias remain. To someone that thinks that might makes right being a woman is just worse. And even someone who thinks that violence is wrong can retain the implications of "might make right" without being aware of it.

    This video is amazing!!
    I was surprised that the guy that met YeNa seemed more comfortable.
    He asked great questions and seemed genuinely interested in learning about her transition.
