      @PopPsych @PopPsych you stated towards the end of your video the following, "The philosophy with some of these wilderness camps - especially the Mormon faith where they are abusing kids at the point of submission in order to heal them."
      The LDS church is not associated with "Wilderness Camps." Do some people send their kids there? Probably, but as a lifetime member, we DO NOT and have never been told to abuse our kids to submission. It's so incredibly generalized as if though you are stating the church is responsible for ALL these behaviors committed by people like Ruby and Jodi. It's NOT within the church standards, it's network and most of all, we don't tolerate abuse. Are ALL members of the LDS faith free and clear of crime and abuse? NO! But come on! We're not a society of abuse and submission. We believe in the 13 articles of faith - look them up. They are our belief systems. That's just the beginning. If abuse takes place, leadership does take a stance and WILL excommunicate and will turn offenders into the police. I believe you are usually fair and do your homework, but when you stated that comment (as many others continue to generalize the Mormon faith in current crimes) it just gets so saturated.

    • @PopPsych
      @PopPsych  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +97

      Oh! That is NOT what I meant. I am saying that the troubled teen wilderness camp industry - which often has affiliations with LDS - has a bad history of using the submission model. I am not talking about the Mormon faith globally. Sorry for the confusion.

    Some info I gleaned from going deep down the rabbit hole after this story broke. 1. Jodi was sexually abused for several years as a very young child. 2. She was married for about two years. It was a very contentious divorce where she tried to ruin him. 3. She is estranged from her son and daughter due to her treatment of them. 4. Jodi could be a lesbian. She told her niece, Jessi, that it would be different if SHE was with a woman bc they would be in love. 5. Ruby’s parents also had a family vlog. 6. Ruby has four sisters and one brother. They were all involved in family vlogs, although two were not heavily involved. 7. The LDS church has an unhealthy focus on sex and what they think is deviant. So much shame and guilt. Unhealthy.
    I know it’s a big time investment, but you should watch Mormon Stories Podcast (TH-cam) interviews with Jessi Hildebrandt. Very informative about Jodi. The interview with Adam Paul Steed was amazing, but with the cases they had to take it down. Hopefully it can be re-released.
    This story is very important. Thank you for covering it. The “troubled teen” industry is very bad and so many are located in Utah and run by LDS members.

    Jessi Hildebrandt recently said that she had been in touch with Kevin, and what he told her was quite similar to the story other male 'clients' of Jodi have told since her arrest: Jodi separated men and women, then made the men the 'evil' problem and her the solution, then taking all the power over the spouse and isolating her. She created triangles that were extremely exploitative and abusive. One of the men who stepped forward is now separated from his family because of... criminal accusations, I'll say, which he claims were fabricated by Jodi. I can see why people blame Kevin, but he also seems to be a victim.
    Jessi Hildebrandt - whose story is horrifying - calls her aunt a psychopath. And I can see why.

      Jodi has a God complex. She created her own cult by seeking out narcissistic women in a community where women are marginalized. Then she convinced these women to isolate and torture their husbands and children. Adam Paul Steed gives a great interview on Mormon podcasts detailing exactly how she did this to him. Adam, however, fought for his kids. While Kevin was absolutely willing to sacrifice his kids in order to get Ruby back.

    I accidentally clicked on a Rubi Franke (8 passengers) video back in 2016 while i was looking for some “reacting to old footage” videos and in this particular video Rubi was reacting to some of her old home videos from her childhood it looked pretty normal and happy to me. During this time i think she had around 30,000 subscribers. Her energy and empathy whilst reacting to the videos drew me in and i subscribed. She was very fun, engaging and in a way goofy in videos she posted during this period (2016-2018). I think the turning point was the steep increase in popularity. Her kids were growing up and learning new things that would clash with her incredibly frigid belief system, and she would always be reading about something that would ensure her kids aren’t spoiled and in a way projecting to the viewers that she knows better than anyone out there and she was taking care of it. Then from there everything went in to the gutter when Hildebrandt came in to the mix.

Then in the 3rd episode the first guy to start one of these "therapy schools" was Mormon just like Jodi and Ruby....and the head guy used it as a money maker and even had his own kids in the program at times and so many of the tools and methods they used seem right out of Jodie's playbook as well and it seems like there's a lot more to this story and the history of this.

What is so unbelievable is that Jodi was so strong she could do some of these things in public with the LDS church and no one was strong enough to stop her. I am saying that the people who are in a position to actually do something about these abuses (law enforcement cps etc) are also church members and when faced with the choice of following the church directives or doing what is legally necessary they choose the church. The church has worked for many years to install members in high ranking positions for this reason. To avoid public/legal scrutiny and to operate outside of the law and to cover up abuses and deal with them internally (aka not at all). It doesn’t matter how many decent people report it when the people they report it to are in the pocket of the church and told to ignore it.

    You’re so right to talk about Ruby’s childhood, a lot of people haven’t talked about it either. Since there’s not a lot of information, it’s hard to say, but my instinct is that as a child she was abused much worse, and therefore that was normalized. She sought help when things were getting hard, and the “help” was even more disturbed that she was and made it even worse. You can’t be right in the head and behave the way she does, and you definitely don’t act this way if you had an idillic childhood yourself.
    Reminds me of my own mom, except she did the exact opposite. She was raised by an abusive woman with undiagnosed psychiatric problems. She told me starting very young - “my mommy was very mean to me. I promised when you were born I would never be like her. I want us to have the exact opposite life together.”
    She kept her promise as much as she possibly could. Still, it was the 90s, and she’s since apologized for things she learned were bad when she trained as a therapist herself. But “honey, I should never have spanked you kids” is different than duct taping us and pouring cayenne pepper into our open wounds. I don’t understand how a mother gets to that place. I can’t understand doing that to any child, let alone your own baby. If someone looks at my niece sideways I wanna fight them.

    When I was in graduate school for counseling psychology I realized that 8 out of 10 students in the class were more disturbed than the clients they says they wanted to help. What was even worse was that they had no self awareness of it. It made me lose regards in the profession. I think most people that go into the field do so thinking they can cure others when they themselves are not willing to explore their own demons.

    People keep saying Ruby seemed remorseful. I must be taking crazy pills because I didn’t get that sense at all. She seemed most upset when she talked about her husband, and the look on her face seems condescending like she thinks she is the smartest person in the room (at her sentencing) she looks so smug and I feel like she went overboard in using contrite sounding words but everything about her smug ass face and the confidence in her body language tells me she is not sorry in the slightest.

    Ruby spoke words of remorse, but I found it unsettling that she had a list of people she thanked. I’m not making a dig at sincere gratitude, but it felt like Ruby was making an Oscar acceptance speech: “Thank you to all those who helped me be on this stage”. Maybe? Idk.

  • @dianemurray6550
    @dianemurray6550 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I definitely believe Ruby is a narcissist, but I don't buy her display of remorse. She wants to be the teacher's pet in every situation, and in court she had to put on a show of remorse to be seen not only as a victim and not responsible for her choices and actions, but the most remorseful defendent ever, ever, ever so she gets her gold star. She's not just remorseful, she's grateful to the officers who arrested her, and the guard who strip searched her, etc, etc, etc. It's still her narcissism at play. Long before she ever met Jody, you could see the absolute glee she experienced abusing her children. Those were literally the only times her face lit up over years of 8 Passengers videos. Jody gave her a story to latch onto, but the sadism was always there.

    You need to read ruby’s diary. I found it on dcp. She writes about what she did to the kids, and what she planned to do. You think ruby’s bad now. You have no idea.
    Edit: if you think Ruby is less culpable than Jody, I disagree. In her phone call to Kevin when she is prison, she is worried about their money. Not the kids-well, except that they are evil, of course. Also on DCP

      No, that is not true. I followed 8 passengers from the beginning. I thougt Ruby was a loving, kind and intelligent mum and Kevin a fun Dad. The moment things went seriously wrong, was when Ruby consulted conexxions with Jodi Hildebrandt. She transforned into this creepy, arrogant self absorbed person. That was the moment I cancelled 8 passengers.

    I’m a mainstream Mormon- never in my life would I think of abusing my children- most of my friends were Mormon moms and they were some of the kindest, best moms I’ve ever met. No one teaches us to abuse our children in our religion. I’m so tired of accusations about being harsh etc- it’s just not true. As in ALL religions there are crazies- these two were just that.

    • @ProgressiveMom
      @ProgressiveMom 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      He didn’t imply that Mormons are taught from the pulpit to be harsh. The LDS religion is a prosperity gospel that preaches perfection, cultivates purity culture, and celebrates external beauty and power. Those attributes are fertile ground for child abuse by parents and “wilderness camps.” To ignore the correlation will only exacerbate the problem.

    Beautifully empathetic, holistic assessment, which is necessary for all (ncluding and especially perpetrators) to grow, change, and learn. Otherwise, these scenarios are doomed to repeat themselves, especially with methods of hiding abuse from caring eyes. Constantly , solely vilifying doesn't help, in the long run. Thank you for teaching.💛

    I grew as a member of the LDS Church, but I wasn't aware of the existence of wilderness camps until recently because I was raised outside of the “Mormon bubble” in Colorado. It's important to note that these camps were established and run by individual members of the church, and are not officially endorsed or affiliated with the church in any other capacity. These members have created these camps under the guise of our faith, but they are not sanctioned by the church itself.
    Anyway, I love your videos and I'm interested to hear your perspective on more of these topics. 😊

    the best parenting strategies ibr found are to be emotionally attuded and bonded with my children and to work on my own emotional regulation and psychological wellness. When im healthy and im paying attention to my child Im better able to figure out a specific technique to deal with their behavior. i have 4 kids 2 are adults, they are all different and the youngest, my brilliant son, has the most challenging emotions and behavior. Figuring out when to help him regulate, when to be softer, and when to use more behavioral aporoaches (like punishments) is truely an art form and I dont always get it right, but i do better when I dont lose my shit.

    I am LDS and have been for my entire life. I’ve never heard of a wilderness camp associated with my faith. Our young men and women go on camping trips, but they are not disciplinary in any way and are only for a few days. If there are these disciplinary camps that are claiming to be associated with our church, they are (1) lying and (2) completely going against the teachings of the LDS church. I will say that you are correct, David, in saying that the LDS faith can be harsh. There are a lot of expectations and pressure.

    I think more people who were raised in certain types of parenting need to write books. It will take a support system, but I believe it's needed for our society. I just started writing mine. What is your childhood trauma so we can all learn not to do it or recognize it so intervention can be done before lifetime destruction is done to the child. I'm 46 and struggle every day. If it wasn't for Jesus, I would have taken my life when I was 8 years old, and every age after that, I fight to survive because the memories my body holds are excruciating. The Comforter keeps me going so I can life joyfully even when going through flashbacks and continuing betrayals. God bless

    I would love to know when Jodi said I did nothing wrong. Then she said something to the effect that before this is over everyone will know what's been going on. Like I said I don't know her exact words but what she said was like a threat To whom, or about whom? I'm assuming she meant Ruby and Kevin. Something else I have a problem with. Several people I've listened to say Ruby seemed genuine or sincere in her letter to the judge. I don't, at least parts of it. We all saw Ruby's way of disciplining her children before she met Jodi. She took great pride in filming herself and her kids. I know when I had to discipline my kids I did not enjoy it. I didn't have to try and hide a smirk or a smile. The last thing I ever wanted to do was hurt my children. I don't mean physically. I never spanked my kids, ever. I was never spanked. I listened to the jail house call she had with her sister. She told her sister she needed to show remorse. She said she needed to show that she was sorry. She said She knew Jodi wouldn't and it would go better for her . She even said the Prosecutor would not step in and suggest how much time Ruby's sentence would be. But he did say he would give his recommendation on Jodi's sentence. Ruby had figured out what she felt she needed to say and do to impress those who had control of her life. Either she came up with this on her own or her lawyer told her this is what needed to be done. It is clearly obvious Ruby is going to say and do anything that will make her sentence lighter. Even if it's all a lie.

    The 8 Passengers videos that I've seen strike me less as Ruby the narcissist and more as Ruby the sadist. She clearly delights in 'disciplining' her children. When she's disciplining, she has a perverse grin on her face. It was disturbing and creepy way before she was charged with felony child abuse. What made her fixate on Russell and Eve particularly? She did that a lot on the 8 Passengers videos as well. What was it about those two kids that sparked her delusions they were possessed?
