9:20 Frank Bunce scores his second of the night after being called "too old and too slow" by the (generally shit-house) NZ media building up to the test, "Too old, too slow, 2 tries" Read the headline the following Monday..good on ya Buncey. Thanks Real Rugby for uploading something for us AB fans, very sporting of you and much appreciated!
Just something I think worth mentioning, as I spotted him in a couple of frames. The great Joost Van Der Westhuizen. It hits me a bit seeing him as my best mate died of MND. A player that I dreaded as an AB's supporter. But always admired as one of the true greats. Great is a word well and truly overused these days. There are very very few true greats. Joost was one. RIP.
@@Rugby-union-and-league Nah. Umaga was nowhere near as good at linking with his wings. Roberson wasn't as good at breaking the line, which always surprised me given his sheer pace.
Watching Little play here, reminds me of what a great era this was for centres. Little and Bunce, Horan and Little, Scott Gibbs, Guscott, Sella, Gerber. Not sure the position has been as strong across so many countries since. Great upload.
This was brilliant! Surely a golden age for the game. SA, NZ, even Scotland had a decent team (decent ish) . The early days of professionalism and there so much hope. How did we get to the modern game from this "golden age"?
Who knows what went wrong... I think it has a lot to do with the laws. Look at refs like Paddy O' Brien, Andre Watson and Jonathan Kaplan, they didn't blow every little thing, they let the game flow and let teams play. Advantage wasn't allowed to go on forever, if you made some meters, advantage was over and the game went on. The scrums were also left for the front rows to sort out, no reset after reset after reset
@@RealRugby Yep - the game has just got more and more complex, when it could just have stayed as it was (probably minus the way the scrum goes down and head injury protocols.)
Our Bok supporters always brag that Lomu never scored against us - just wish we could say the same about Cullen. He was such a powerful force in open play and when he touched the ball there was trouble. I watched his video and he is definitely one of my favourite players of all time.
Bro he would of in the 95 final if it wasn't for a perfect tackle by Joost? I know "if". Great tackle though an 1 i always remember as a Kiwi an huge All Blacks supporter. RIP Joost
They go on about how Jonah never scored against the Springboks but as was evident here his power running provided ample space for Marshall, Cullen, Wilson and Umaga to score
I know its likely just me, but your vids are very Bok centric if you will. You highlight other legendary players from other countries, sure, but this is nice to see. Its a celebration of rugby. As one fellow noted, as a bok supporter, it;s painful, but as a fan of rugby, this was a lovely watch. This was just a reminder of just how good Bunce was. He would have been a force even with the stronger, faster, better drilled players of today. Same thing with that man Gerber in my humble opinion. Please keep up the good work. One last question, what would be the best way to get in touch with you? I have a question about some of your archives.
Thanks for the feedback Thomas. I am South African, so the footage I have will always weigh heavily towards Springbok rugby, although I try and showcase as much rugby from across the globe as possible. My email address is werner@realrugby.co.za
New Zealander here. I was always a fan of Danie Gerber. It's sad we saw so little of him internationally. I remember he played for a World 15 against a Northern hemisphere selection. John Kirwan was outside him. The two of them cut the Northerners to shreds. I almost felt sorry for them...... almost. Yes, Bunce was brilliant also.
As Bok supporters we can suffer through 30 tries scored against us by the All Blacks because(we almost did in one match in Albany) we can appreciate their greatness, but you will get negative number of views if you make a 30 Wallabies tries or heavens forbid 30 England tries against us.
Frank Bunce was absolutely amazing. His running line, change of pace, step and deft short passing game was 👌
Laurie Mains spoke very highly of Frank Bunce. Said he would always pull out one or two plays every test that would turn it the AB's way.
Dominating for decades at a time. The Mighty Humble AB. 🙏🏾🇳🇿💪🏾
Those switch plays were beautifully executed, time after time, John Hart likely had a hand in that, great coach.
I miss hearing the English speaking SA commentator. His voice brings back great memories of titanic battles against the Boks. What is his name?
I could watch Jeff Wilson all day. He got better with every season and retired at the very top of his game.

@ regular john I concur mate!

As a Springbok supporter, this was painful to watch, but as a rugby fan, it was a joy.
Do you know how difficult it was to put together?!?! But I have a lot of respect for the All Blacks. Credit where credit is due
@@RealRugby Indeed
Don’t worry mate there’s a vid of 40 great Springbok tries against the ABs. I just watched it, and as a kiwi it was painful and enjoyable all at once
As a Kiwi supporter it was disappointing that the world never got to see Danie Gerber in his prime because of apartheid
I always thought Bunce was the best 13 I had ever seen...hard as nails and always evasive.. ab team of 95-97.. best ever in my opinion
Agree with you 100%
Definitely!
Tana Umaga,Bruce Robertson?
Yes he was better than Robertson, Stanley, Innes, Umaga and Smith. The most complete of all of them
@@Rugby-union-and-league Nah. Umaga was nowhere near as good at linking with his wings. Roberson wasn't as good at breaking the line, which always surprised me given his sheer pace.
Beautiful to watch, thank u sir. That James Small attempted foot trip still gets me tho? He would of scored anyway but should of been sent
There was another try on the left wing maybe wilson where cullen was held back by the collar as he came through.
That 1997 All Black performance contained some of the best tries ever...magnificent performance against a brutal Bok team at Eden park
6:26 That try by Brook was based on something that the Going brothers cooked up long ago up when playing for Northland. They called it the "special".
Mid-Northern ‘Maromaku Special’

Danie Gerber, Phillipe Sella and Tim Horan were the gold standard.
@@fletmok3548Are you saying Little and Bunce weren't lmao?
Awesome Upload. Must say Bunce was so underrated.
Once again we are reminded of how wonderful frank bunce and jeff wilson were

gotta say frank bunce best center we ever had..juz me

Cullen eviscerated defenses with true aplomb. He could break tackles like no other IMHO.
Cullen was a freak who could split the best defences open with ease

It's a team sport and the AB is second to none. The none sides are more individualistic than a team idea.
‘96 was a season for the ages..
Beautiful
Rest in peace James small you were amazing
Yeah, he was a beast. Tough as they come
I forgot How good Josh Kronfeld was.
They go on about how Jonah never scored against the Springboks but as was evident here his power running provided ample space for Marshall, Cullen, Wilson and Umaga to score
Should just call this the Christian Cullen highlight reel.

Geez, Frank Bunce humiliated that defence
He was a master. I have a lot of respect for him, but hate him because he was so good!
Amazing how we always kept Lomu out. A miracle of sorts.
A miracle is defined as something that defies the laws of nature, so, okay, keeping Lomu scoreless against South Africa *was* a miracle.
Kept Lomu out, and usher Cullen for a shitload of tries hahaha
I could only make it to 14min. The pain got too much. 👍🏻😓
Sorry to do that to you boet...
All you missed was more tries from Cullen. Standard!

That’s my last name lol
Crikey were the Springboks a little disorganised in the 90s??
Champagne rugby, 96-97!
Tremendous selection of brilliant attacking rugby! Boy oh boy...
James small why would you do that

Of all the teams in the world to lose to, New Zealand and South Africa hate losing to England the most.
God, that would be awful. I can't bear to watch any England tries against anyone!
Fair enough mate. And being a New Zealander I can understand where you're coming from.
Has England scored 30 tries against SA 😂
in the 90s I think the Australian team were the kings of rugby
91-92 yes
As a very staunch all black fan I'd have to but agree!two world cups,91 and 99!but all blacks dealt to them severely in wellington 1996
Painful to watch again. Good stuff though.
...and you'll never see any Jonah Lomu highlights😮
