Britain had outlawed and ended the trans Atlantic slave trade decades before 1885, in the face of fierce opposition from local African rulers. The idea of industrialized slave trade is not only inaccurate but a contradiction in terms. Slavery impeded industrialization by encouraging the use of cheap, unmotivated and unskilled labour instead of mechanisation and innovation. Colonialism wasn't genocidal and was only possible because the rule was no worse than being dominated by neighbouring tribes. It is a strange genocide when the population goes up! so we are supposed to overlook the fact that many of these "slaves" were actually slaves already in their African community, BEFORE any Europeans arrived. People from conquered tribes and local thieves, r*pists and such like, were aall criminals before any vessels arrived to try and trade with the locals. So, when Europeans needed workers for their plantations etc in the W.Indies and America, they PURCHASED those people who we ALREADY SLAVES, and took them to their various work places overseas.
We paid Africa at the time of purchase. Go see your local tribal chiefs ancestors and ask THEM for "reparations," as they are the ones who sold you in the first place.

We continue to Import Africans, not to our Colonies, but to our homeland. We are told to meet their every need.
I believe it all comes down to big corporations who lobby for this insanity in order to sell more and more and more of their mass-produced goods - which could never be afforded by the africans if left in their native countries.
My uncle worked for Nigerian government for over 25 years and slaves came with the job . When he came back to U.K. He couldn't believe how many were here and my aunt could believe they were wearing clothes.
We prospered from slavery before abolishing it, a cynical observation but does that mean some of our assets we hold today are tainted? I suggest industrialisation which took off in ernest after abolition is far more significant. Little is said of our own people being exploited and various acts of parliament to protect workers, especially children, postdated the end of slavery. Unfortunately, as we have seen recently, sweat shop labour is still happening within our shores and elsewhere.
It's a weird way of looking at things. Every last bit of work that a slave did, every service, every product, would have been consumed long ago.

Countries like the UK, Belgium, Germany, US, Spain France, Portugal and the Netherlands industrialised slavery. See the 1885 Treaty of Berlin. The colonialisation of Africa was a genocial project which we in the West have still to come to terms with.
If all involved are now long dead, who is there to have to come to terms with anything ?
I think you would be better off coming to terms with the fact that Africa and parts of Asia have more enslaved people today than ever before in history.

Britain had outlawed and ended the trans Atlantic slave trade decades before 1885, in the face of fierce opposition from local African rulers. The idea of industrialized slave trade is not only inaccurate but a contradiction in terms. Slavery impeded industrialization by encouraging the use of cheap, unmotivated and unskilled labour instead of mechanisation and innovation. Colonialism wasn't genocidal and was only possible because the rule was no worse than being dominated by neighbouring tribes. It is a strange genocide when the population goes up!
