  • Occasionally RetroMaven likes to shake things up so here is a clip from one of my favorite movies from my childhood. The Great Race (1965) is a Blake Edwards' comedy loosely based on the New York to Paris Race of 1908. While the movie starts Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Natalie Wood, the real stars are the two incredible automobiles, the Leslie Special and the Hannibal Twin-8! This scene in which the Great Leslie (Curtis) and Max (Peter Falk) join forces to rescue their comrades being held prisoner in the castle of Baron Von Stuppe (Ross Martin) features both of these amazing cars! What a great movie. I loved this movie, must've watched a hundred times growing up.

Great film. Music by Henry Mancini, and Natalie Wood strips down to her underware !!!

The first time I saw this was at the movies. Myself, two brothers, mother and father lined up down the street. More than 50 years ago. Mother and father have passed and neither my brothers or self are young but I remember that Saturday night like it was yesterday. The magic of a bygone era. For "Babes in Toyland" it was again queueing down the street for a mid week matinee (school holidays) before the theatre even opened. I was so excited during "Swiss Family Robinson" I spent most of the movie standing up. Getting tickets for "Mary Poppins" just wasn't a thing so we ended up with the five of us plus grandmother and aunt taking a train to the city.
I consider myself so blessed to have watched all of these on DVD with my own children.

There is something magical in those older movies, so much effort put into filming, no greenscreen everywhere, charming actors and clever humour. This scene is my favourite one, even if the fight between guards and The Great Leslie could be a bit more convincing. The music, suspension, and later the famous fencing fight - simply amazing.

For me the scene really takes off once Max enters the castle to the strain of Henry Mancini's music and jumps in the Hannibal 8 and all heck breaks loose!! Such great cinema!!

I believe this music piece was never listed on the original CD from the movie, I wonder if there is somewhere a 'clean' full recording.

A classic moment from The Great Race! You can still see those two amazing autos today. They take them to classic car shows. One of the Hannibal 8s sold at auction a few years ago for 6 figures! Wonder how often you have to change the oil!!

I have looked for years for toy versions of those 2 cars but apparently none were ever made. Anyone have a laser printer I can borrow??😁
