I’m starting to think he’s a narcissist. I mean look at his previous history. The constant hate for Dwight, McGee. Rudy. I really believe he isn’t satisfied with himself and is so insecure to the point to bring others down to make himself feel better. That’s the vibe I always get from him.

I saw that game on classics! You are right it doesn’t get enough attention, and it was actually the heady move of Westphal taking advantage of the rules at the time to get it into the 3rd overtime by calling a timeout they didn’t have to induce a technical foul but then the Suns could at least advance the ball to half court for a better shot to tie it. Another reason and another great story of Paul’s IQ.

Laker fan here chiming in. My guys took the first 2 games in a best of 5 in the early 90's in Phoenix. Down 0-2 and facing elimination vs a 39 win Lakers team Paul Westphal told the media "we're gonna win the next 2 in LA, and then we will wrap up the series in Phoenix." Pretty much verbatim. That's exactly what happened. I was young, and crushed. Not after the series, but after the game 2 press conference. Westphal really convinced with the way he spoke, that my Lakers stood zero chance to win 1 out of the last 3 games of that series. I'll never forget that press conference as long as I live. That was one special dude. My condolences to him and his family,

Because of this injury (a sprained left MCL), Kevin Johnson did not play in Game One. He returned well ahead of schedule for Game Two and played well (14 points on 6-10 FG and 2-2 FT, 16 assists, 2 steals), but was limited by a mechanical knee brace and could not push the ball like usual. However, Westphal later said that he could see that Johnson's knee was improving and that Phoenix "would have something more like the real Kevin Johnson" the rest of the way, hence his comments after the Game Two loss. (For the quotation, see Lee Shappell's book "Phoenix Suns: Rising to the Top with the 'Team of Oddities,'" published in 1993, page 265).
It was still a bold move on his part, though.

The game was the third-to-last of the regular season, on April 22, 1993. Kevin Johnson's injury was a sprained left MCL. It knocked him out of the final two games of the regular season and was supposed to keep him out of most, if not all, of the Suns' (best-of-five) First Round series against the eighth-seeded, 39-win Lakers. After Phoenix lost Game One at home without him, K.J. returned well ahead of schedule for Game Two. He played well (14 points on 6-10 FG and 2-2 FT, 16 assists, 2 steals) but was limited by a mechanical knee brace and could not push the ball like usual. The Suns thus scored just 81 points and lost at home again, meaning that they would have to win three straight elimination games to win the series.
    And they did.

After that the NCAA changed the way they fielded the tournament teams.

Kenny and Shaq are 100% the same regarding their rings. They only got them by playing with the best players in the league. No other superstar, and heck any other player I can think of brings up their rings as much as Shaq.

So Kenny Smith wanted to be an nba coach awhile ago, I've always looked at Kenny as a nice guy who tries to sound smarter than he really is, which is why he never got a gig as a head coach (people around the league likely found that out). The fact that he thought Westphal's story might've been true and was asking Charles to verify....(lol) really proves he isn't a very bright dude. RIP Paul Westphal.

Chuc never ran to join a super team, he led a good team to the finals and lost to the one and only GOAT 💯🔥 Chuc didn’t join the Rockets till he was way past his prime and on his way out. Chuc is a winner in my book and to anyone who actually knows and appreciates the game.

Barkley was not past his prime in his first year with the Rockets ('96-'97)-and Houston won 57 games that season. But he did suffer an (undiagnosed) hernia on March 1, 1997, missed the next fourteen contests, and struggled from the field the rest of the season.
