From the outset of this year's Scottish Highland adventure, Iona wanted to climb her first "big" mountain, so after scouring the maps and mountain guides we settled on climbing Beinn Dàmh (Ben Damph), in theTorridons.
Beinn Dàmh means “Hill of the Stag”, apt because it stands in the middle of the Ben Damh deer estate. It's a Corbett, a mountain over 2,500ft but under 3,000ft (which would be a Munro). It'a actually just 40ft off being a Munro, so close but so far!
What a climb! Steep trails, false summits, rock scrambles, amazing views and a pub at the finish, a perfect day's hiking in the Torridons.
It's a great "starter" mountain but certainly no less challenging for that and the views on the ascent and from the top are spectacular. And then Iona ran down the last couple of miles, I reckon we have a future Nicky Spinks in the making!
