One of our guys built a plywood CASTLE and 3 attacking siege towers too then bought Knights/archers figure sets at the local HOBBY LOBBY to battle with (quite impressive) !!! When he's not using it (medevil castle) he has it suspended on cord ropes from hooks on his ceiling up above his gaming table (works pretty well ) ! :-)
The funny thing is most medieval castle interiors were actually plastered and covered with murals and paintings. Most of them wore away with time giving the impression that they were bare stone rooms. You could have probably got away with a historically accurate castle theme with sparing use of real stone at a few key areas and some good medieval decor and hand painted murals here and there. Edit: Well that's why you wait to watch the entire video before commenting.
The obvious thing to do in the basement is the WWII bunker. Love the crusader castle theme; light and bright and a nice thematic contrast to the existing room.
@@LittleWarsTVI saw some corrugated steel pieces being carried down into the basement early in this episode so that makes me think that The War Room or Bunker will be the basement theme. It’s probably too late for the castle area, but google Crathes Castle and Craigiever Castles in Scotland to see what they did with painted ceiling beams.

If you wanted the most options, why not consider using large double-sided panels that could be mounted on the walls to change between themes based on the game being played?

As much as I'm keen for the return of the Little Wars TV wargame videos, the discussion and work into the renovation has been very enjoyable. The consideration for history and working on the project really feels like any other miniature terrain project (just bigger, naturally, lol). Also, I was a little apprehensive to try and fill out the Wargaming form as my first instinct was "I'm not a historical wargamer" but I was glad to see the survey wasn't so narrow (which I should have expected from the start) and I was able to complete it. Always makes me happy to see how wide the Wargaming hobby can be~
This is the biggest scale terrain project we’ve done hah! And yes, glad you tried the survey. Lots of fantasy and sci fi gamers take it and there are questions for all scales and genres!
Well done, when first starting to watch your videos years ago I thought you were in an old Armory type building, especially since the armory on George St (where I was stationed ages ago) had been repurposed/sold years ago as well.

You gentlemen need to purchase a reciprocating saw (sawz-all). When removing a wall, run saw across top of the bottom plate cutting fasteners holding studs in place, pull the stud out and down to separate it from the top plate(s). You can then pry the plates loose. Just remember if you decide to reuse the stud or plate to watch for severed fasteners. Wood is reusable without indentations or fractures from pounding on them with a sledge hammer. Besides, injuries from the saw will leave a cool scar versus a dent in the head from a 5lb sledge. Can't wait to see the finished projects.

I need to get to work on my own wargame room. But I still hold out hope that you guys will try Pulp Alley. That miniatures game system is the most fun that I've had with miniatures in 30+ years.
Maybe a couple of members from Little Wars could go out across the US and Canada, making visits to other gaming clubs to see their clubhouse set ups and play a match with them. A gaming club tour so to speak. Oh, and chart your travels on a wall map.
I personally would have just stayed with the Victorian Parlor theme cause I like eclectic decor and creative clutter but I'm excited to see how yalls new space turns out!
I think you spoiled the basement bit with the gray primer on the wall. Though with water damage comes mold issues. I hope that was settled before it was covered up.
What you are doing to the original room is what I had in mind. Very good, the semi Victorian setting is conductive to almost any era of gaming. The new area I would have done as a modern day war college. Several plain tables. Shelves of books with references to current projects turned facing the room. Cabinets showing examples of all eras and scales of your miniature collections. Posters, paintings of great military leaders, maps...etc., also suitable for any era. The new basement should be a computer LAN game system and online research area. don't bother with a theme just add some soundproofing material to make studying a little easier. Very jealous of such a great gaming environment.
ONE THING - Ever since your 1st video (SHARPSBURG) I've noticed you all use " Smaller Tables " than we do for your games ( maybe it's because you use a lot of 6mm ? We used lots of 6mm, 15mm, 20mm, Air/Land/Naval) ) - We battle on a standard PING-PONG table which is 9 ft. X 5 ft. ! I noticed in your design layout for your NEW/OLD Room a 7 ft. X 5 ft. Board-game table which is still smaller than our standard ping-pong table , The Largest Wargame we've ever done - STALINGRAD - Battle for the Factories had 3 2"X2" 2-story foam factories down the middle of the table with single-story buildings down both sides of the ping-pong table and 19 PLAYERS around it !! Some ping-pong tables come FOLDABLE on WHEELS and you could store them against a wall ? If you had 2-3 of these FOLDABLE Tables you could use Multiple Tables lined-up side-by-side to form a GIANT 15 ft. X 9 ft. OR 5 ft. X 27 ft. LONG ( We once did a BRIDGE TOO FAR game in 20mm that was 40 feet long ! :-)
I think a good theme might be an explorer's or adventurer's club. It would be a good excuse to have artifacts from different eras from marble busts to captured weapons. Perhaps it could be used in the future when Little Wars owns the rest of the building!
The explorer’s club is very much in keeping with the original theme for the Victorian parlor, where we brought in eclectic artifacts to clutter the walls. Could another marble bust or two maybe!
The Crusader's Castle is not at all what I expected. I like it! A less than usual choice, but oddly appealing. Is it too late to suggest the logo of LWTV be changed to something other than a Tiger tank? I always found the logo slightly off-putting, and not really representative of what you guys do. Maybe a hoplite silhouette?
We’ve thought about changing the logo from time to time, so it’s not an out of bounds question. Honestly, when we started the channel we were looking for a tank silhouette and never paid much thought to what nationality the tank was. Anyone savvy enough to recognize that model tank by the silhouette surely has a proven appreciation for military history. Will we change the logo? Maybe. Open to that. Maybe we should run an open contest for new logo options!

Over here in jolly old England a local RAF squadron had to drop its name after "complaints" The Lincolnshire-based 14 Squadron was formed in 1915 and was nicknamed the Crusaders after flying missions in the Middle East. The RAF said the decision to scrap the "unofficial" nickname followed a confidential service complaint, which was partially upheld. A spokesman added: "Our focus must be on not giving prominence to any offensive term that goes against the values of the Royal Air Force." "The traditions and informal nicknames used by the RAF in the earliest days of the service have a place in our history, however, some are no longer appropriate in the 21st Century," the spokesman said.
The one thing is a PRIVAT Gaming Club, the other a OFFICIAL part of a nations Army. I served on the Destroyers Rommel, Mölders and Lütjens. And I agree that the use of those names is no longer justifiable (also for a German Luftwaffe Squadron). Nevertheless I wear my Destroyer Squadron Caps in public...because I'm now a civilian. Times change, that is nothing new. How many RAF Squadrons dissolved forever?
Well, one of the advantages of being a private club of friends is that we don’t face the same kinds of public pressures that large organizations face to rewrite or run away from history. We can just enjoy history for what it is.

In fact, I think teaching and "handling" history is way more important today, that's why I prefer historical wargaming with my son and my nephew instead of Warhammer (but that's also OK.). My Son already saw Dachau and we visited the Campsite Humbolstrasse in Essen, right where I grew up. 520 young Jewish girls had to "live" here while working at the giant Krupp plants. One of my Grandfather's worked as a Capo on industrial construction sites (for example Panzerbau III in Essen) and he always told me that everybody knew what was going on. But strangely, those who moan and gripe about the disappearing of traditions that enable those crimes, also moan and gripe about mixing military history with these things. Sounds a bit one-sided to me.
Not one "health and safety" inspector? No high-visibility vests and hard-hats? No prominently displayed fire-exit signs and Perspex boards identifying "where you are" and what is around you? It MUST be a Crusader castle then. As a modern castle absent these features (including a visitors centre) is well-nigh impossible. (Incidentally - why didnt you consider a nautical theme?
ww2 is a fun period to wargame but a ww2 bunker sounds boring as heck as a war room interior. Tho i have had my fair share of damp bunkers and smelly barracks with pastel colored concrete walls.

The gray primer was done by a previous tenant. But we observed the basement for a year to check for moisture. All good

A full size table for us would be at least 6x4. That’s a pretty standard miniature wargaming table size. Anything larger would be “oversized”

It was not available. There has been another tenant renting that office on a long term lease until last year. So we didn’t have the opportunity

I served on the Destroyers Rommel, Mölders and Lütjens.
And I agree that the use of those names is no longer justifiable (also for a German Luftwaffe Squadron).
Nevertheless I wear my Destroyer Squadron Caps in public...because I'm now a civilian.

Well, one of the advantages of being a private club of friends is that we don’t face the same kinds of public pressures that large organizations face to rewrite or run away from history. We can just enjoy history for what it is.

In fact, I think teaching and "handling" history is way more important today, that's why I prefer historical wargaming with my son and my nephew instead of Warhammer (but that's also OK.).

ww2 is a fun period to wargame but a ww2 bunker sounds boring as heck as a war room interior. Tho i have had my fair share of damp bunkers and smelly barracks with pastel colored concrete walls.
