There's a ton of guitar maintenance and repair tutorials on the StewMac channel by the world renown luthier Dan Erlewine. StewMac is Stewart MacDonald, arguably the best known luthier supply company on the planet. Dan repairs and maintains some of the most famous guitars in history that are owned by some of the most famous guitarists in history, and often uses those maintenance jobs in his videos. Some of his videos cover really difficult work that most of us either can't do, or don't possess the correct tools to do them, but most of them are easily performed with a few standard tools most people already have. Just search for StewMac, then have some fun!

One suggestion - After soldering in the new pickup, and before putting back the bridge, test the new pickup. Simply plug in the guitar, and gently tap on the new pickup with a thin piece of metal to make sure it works. Remember to also test the switch, knobs, etc. to verify that everything is working as expected. This will save you a lot of time, just in case something went wrong in the replacement process.

A few years ago, I installed a Mighty-Mite single coil into the bridge of my Stagg M350. It was such a feeling of "first time" euphoria, and it sounds great!! In so doing, I found that the original pickups are wax-potted (something I learned about on this channel). I shot Stagg an email, asking if all of their pickups are wax potted. They said yes. One of the reasons I love this show is the fact that Max is NOT a snob!! He sees the real beauty in all the guitars he reviews. I think it's awesome to have such open-mindedness, unaffected by hype and rumors.

So I ordered a cheap hotmail pickup for my starcaster strat. 11.00 bucks. Installed it. Black wire to my 5 way switch, soldered grounds to the back of the pot. Isolated the white and red and taped them off after tinting it with solder. Sounds amazing man, such a night and day difference. Added locking machine head tuners and a full vintage strat tremolo system. Awesome sound, stays in tune. Waiting on a cheap roasted maple neck from China. But basically super stratocastering it out! Next 500k pots! The neck I ordered has the bone nut already installed. The final touch! Cant wait!

One step you forgot to mention, after all is done and you tune the guitar you should set the pickup height. 5mm from the pole pieces to the strings is a good staring point depending on how hot the pickup is and adjust to taste from there.

There isn't a strat player alive who hasn't occasionally thought 'I wish I could get a fatter tone, but I don't want to lose my strat.' One of these cheapo hot rails pickups in the bridge position will expand your tone range exponentially. Also good to replace the lame neck pickup in every Tele ever made...

  • @FiveStringCommando
    @FiveStringCommando 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

You could always attach string to the wires (or solder a long wire to the old wires) of the old pickup before pulling it out. Then use that string (or wire) to feed the new wires through the body.

Exactly I have used Dental Floss from the Dollar Store and you can tie it easier and you dont have to worry since it wont break if you need to give it a little tug . Waxed Floss is also preferable it slides easier if there are snags or any splinters in the wiring hole .

I bought some of the dual rail pickups from aliexpress just to see what they are like paid less than £15 for all 3 pickups. Added one to my telecaster in the bridge position and I was gobsmacked at how good they sound. I think they are a much better option to bar magnet pickups you find in say squire guitars. Good little how to video Max! The hair flick when soldering was awesome! Keep safe dude

Then I put a fender mojocaster logo on it and then I replaced the saddle's with fender one's and The neck plate. To fender one and now I just ordered that humbucker you just showed us . And I. Going to put that in the guitar . So thanks for directing me to the website to get it .

Easier than removing the bridge humbucker... when you pull the single coil attach a thick string or wire to it ( twist together, electrical tape, etc.) Pull it all the way through, and when you go to put the new hot rail in, reverse the process. It is the same as electricians using a fish tape to pull wire through tight or sealed spaces. Just make sure the connection is firm, but thin to slip through the chase

G-Max is the pickups wired in series or parallel? Is the pickups coil split/tapped. What are the types, features and brand names of the pickups in this guitar after the video was finished to TH-cam? What wattage was your soldering iron? I use 15 to 30 Watt either electric AC or DC Powered for portability and ease of use. They make a quick cool DC Powered models. This was another GR8T video ! ! ! Also a weird thing with my starcaster. Its body is heavier then expected for basswood. Wondering if the company made a booboo and it's made of a different wood material? Like I said, it's heavier then basswood. It's the sunburst model with the arrowhead headstock. Not a single serial number on it. The neck plate was blank. Now it has the f stamped plate.

I bought two of these guitars to fix up with top of the line hardware. Original Floyd Rose nut and bridge, Gotoh 16:1 tuners, Seymour Duncan lil Screamin Demon in the neck and demon bucker in the bridge. However, nothing made a change for the better until I switched out the cheaply Asian made 500k volume pot. I mean this thing sucks, and what's worse is this is the same volume pot they're using on all the overseas made guitars. I switched out the junk volume pot with a Dimarzio Pro Parts 500K push pull pot. This made the biggest difference in tone out of all the hardware that was switched out. However, you have to drill a slightly bigger hole for the shaft to fit. I also had to use a dremel tool to get the new pickups and floyd to fit properly. These guitars absolutely scream!!!!

I installed a cheap dual blade humbucker to replace a single coil bridge pickup and was unimpressed. Sounded very flat and uninspiring. In retropect I failed to take into account the tone pots are 250K and typically should be 500K for a humbucker. I haven't tried swapping the pot yet but just something to keep in mind if you have a tone pot for the pickup.

Why is the guitar not painted inside of the guitar with the cool finish? Why painted black?

For $12 I like to see how long they last. They sound good but will your guitar catch fire after 3 months. Let us know after a few months of intense playing. I'm interested.

You don't need to remove/loosen bridge pickup - neck cables should fit perfectly

Maybe I'm just not seeing it but where is the selector switch? I see that the push pull knob does the coil split but how to you actually change the pickups from neck to bridge?

Daniel Sheehan The push pull is the pickup selector, the way Lynch wanted it. Neck only or bridge only.
