the water in the bucket is creating hydro-static pressure to force the water equally into the clay below the waterline. it is a great method for dehydrating clay also. I usually clip the top of the clay bag to the top of my bucket to reduce the risk of water infiltration, also make sure your bag doesn't have any perforations, or you will end up with a really wet clay. thanks.
