I am at the end of my life now..Wow, what a ride. This song just reminds me of how much time has passed and how quickly it goes. If you are young, Im not preaching and your life is yours to live as you choose, but trust me--The days are long but the years are short.

My brother/roommate was killed over two decades ago. I wanted to play this at his funeral, but wasn't allowed. It makes me think of him. I hope he made it to heaven. He'd been in two wrecks, and he was never the same after the second. He had a heart of gold. He really was so fun to hang around. I know...people always talk great about the dead, but he was my roommate for a reason. He had a natural wit. Off the top of his head he would say or sing things that made horrible situations laughable. I miss you, Jamie

This song is one I love so much. I can play over and over.
My life has been up and down with heroin and opiate addiction. This disease took my only brother at 43. I was 39 and only 90 days from coming home after serving 11 years and 8 months in prison for addiction to prescription drugs. He was found in motel room. I eventually relapsed after 7-1\2 years of being clean. My first cousin committed suicide and my old beautiful ex girlfriend was found overdosed few years ago.
I’m holding my head and trying to take it one day at a time.
Feels good to just talk about all this. I’m 55 today

My uncle just passed away yesterday (Grandpa Seth in Troll 2). For 10 years after his sister died he withdrew and did not contact any of us. I sent him Christmas cards; he never replied. We learned a couple weeks ago he was getting evicted from long-term care but all our efforts to locate him (the facility name we were given did not exist) failed. Notice of his death did reach my mother and his former roommate's niece.

This song reminds me of my late mother driving me to school on a rainy day in 1970. I was 6 back then. I loved this song, but hated going to a school that I couldn’t stand being at. I’ve been a James Taylor fan since I first heard his music in 1968 or 1969. My mother & father both loved his music, too. I’ve seen James live in 1994 with my ex-wife. We enjoyed his performance. He treats his fans like he’s performing for them in his own place. The man is still an amazing singer/ songwriter/ guitarist! I still listen to his music to this very day. I never get tired of listening to his music (but then again..,. Who does?).

This is one of the greatest misunderstood songs ever written. James Taylor proves that it is better to be lucky than good. Everyone misunderstands the song to be all about the loss of a love, the emotional toll of the loss, and the recollections of conversations and an airplane crash. The song is actually a pity party for James Taylor. It's about the suicide of his girlfriend, his drug addiction and rehab, and the failure of his new band "Flying Machines". The song is not deep, but incredibly shallow.

I remember when it was a hit. The words sounded like a typical singer songwriter's poetry: fire vs. rain, sunshine vs. darkness, etc. It's only recently I've learned that the song was definitely genuine in its lyrics -- inspired by the suicide of his close friend (verse 1) and his dealings with addiction (verse 2). Deep. The song is a masterpiece, actually. Great acoustic guitar playing. As for my discovering the meaning of the words.... I guess you learn something new every day. Tons of respect, props to Mr. Taylor.

Susanne died of an overdose so verse 1 was about drugs too. Last year I lost my ex-fiancee to a heroin overdose. When she left me she got into doing heroin and the guy would shoot her up while she was still asleep. May she and Susanne rest in peace.

@@airheadrica1956 he said that the airplane part was from a headline he saw on a newspaper. I guess it was a bad day for James and a lot of other people.

I'm so very sorry to correct you, and don't want you to feel bad. I lived in James Dorm at UNC. We pitched in and bought his high school girlfriend because he missed her and couldn't smile very often. Her plane went down....no survival.

It's been three months since my wife, my dearest friend and companion for decades--most of my life---died after long fight with cancer. On the day she was buried, Christmas Eve, as I was driving home from the cemetery, this song came to me, clear as a bell. I hadn't been listening to it, not for a long while. Coincidentally (?) her father and I were on the phone, and he quoted the lyrics to me a few days later----no, not coincidence. That was from her. "Sweet dreams and fine machines in pieces on the ground".😿

James poured his heart out for all of us to share his sadness. It gives us a time in our life to understand our loss. Love to you and music is part of our self care.

Flying machines... it references his band, FLYING MACHINES , that had failed and broken up. Just one more source of anguish in his life at that time. The sweet dreams referred to the plan Suzanne must have had for her future.
