      I feels like the floor is moving, but it depends on how it does move, like one side to the other or more like a circle kinda movement. Also during a real earthquake (like the ones we have here) you can't walk because 1.- the floor is moving and 2.- some stuff can fall into your head, which sucks. But living here you don't have to worry about the whole building collapsing, because unless you are on a really old building (like form the 1800s) every building is designed to resist an earthquake of at least 9.0 Richter. But if you are lucky enough to be on a 17th story apartment or so, you'll see how your building can almost touch the next one, which is what they are built to do. Watch the video from brazilian tourists in Costanera Center, the tallest building in South America. They were on the top floor and they filmed how the structure was holding on like a champion. I hope this was helpful!

    • @jlrfnox4173
      @jlrfnox4173 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Depends the intensity of the earthquake, frequency and type of movement, for example with an earthquake 8.4 so if you try to move quickly you end up falling to the floor and if you are at home some furniture will move from its original position as the refrigerator

    Hats off to these brave people. I live in Pakistan and we experience earthquakes every now and then but as soon as we realize its an earthquake we shoot towards the streets. I'm amazed by these people's reaction. Courageous people. Love and respect from Pakistan.

    • @Luboman411
      @Luboman411 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Part of the reason is that a) Chile gets more earthquakes, and those earthquakes tend to be much stronger, than the earthquakes in Pakistan. So people get used to it. b) Chile has adopted Japan-style engineering codes for their buildings, and it's a very non-corrupt country (like Japan) so people trust that the buildings will withstand earthquakes and not collapse. That's not the case in Pakistan--people don't trust those buildings so they run out into the streets.

      Chilean structures are seismic resistant, so that a major earthquake hitting will cause minor damage. Here in the Philippines, even a magnitude 6 quake can shift foundations and create ground fissures.

  • @TheGringuish12

    As a chilean I must say there are some myths on why we keep it so cool during earthquakes:
    First, we are not really used to major earthquake events, they happen every few years but that does not make an habit, but rather being taught since children that rule number one of survival in an earthquake is keeping calm and think deliberately. Earthquakes still scare the fuck out of us but we know for sure that panicking only increases the risk
    A major factor in chilling it down is the common knowledge that buildings are resilient as regulations in sísmic construction are obviously higher that average. A 5,5 event in my apartament house in Santiago is a strong meh, but the same event in every other country would freak me out inmediately
    This being said, smaller that 5,0 ritcher events are indeed very common and it does polish the awareness on when you should do something or just wait it out

    So, you'd came to Chile and lived an Earthquake... so, you got the full Experience for a Tourist! lol
    And it's true, if you feel an Earthquake here and you don't know what to do... just see how the Chileans react, if they are like: "Meeeh..." don't panic, but even if a Chilean it's a bit overwhelmed ...well you just survived!

      No, that's the case of earthquakes caused by superficial local faults, which doesn't apply here. In subduction zones, earthquakes tend to go on for minutes unless they are very small in magnitude (M4-5), because in subduction regions just like Chile, Japan, Indonesia, etc... the bigger the earthquake is (magnitude), the longer it lasts.

    • @cocolebolovesgod2700
      @cocolebolovesgod2700 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The one in Japan (in 2011) lasted 6 mins....
      Your point doesn't stand
      The length of time it lasts depend on where is the epicenter and many other things
      (If it's a joke only then sorry lol)

    The ground literally did a wave right under my feet as I was walking to school that morning. Craziest experience with waking up holding on tight to my bed from constant after shocks. Was kind of cool seeing & feeling the ground move like a wave.
