SMEG 50's Variable Temperature Kettle | Is It Worth $200?

  • We take the Smeg 50's Style Variable Temperature Kettle for a practical test run to see if it's worth the hefty $200 price tag.
Boasting features of 1.7L water capacity, 360 degree swivel base and of course, 7 variable water temperatures, we perform a review like none other before and see just how practical this piece of nostalgia actually is.
Our detailed testing looked at the durability of the lid, the weight and even its stability on a flat surface and unfortunately our expectations weren't met for such a high price tag.
    PURCHASE
We performed our dry test run at David Jones which at the time of testing had a discount to just under $200 for the appliance. There were a number of different colours on display but the black and white model captured our eyes.
    WEIGHT
The appliance itself with no water weighs a heavy 1.8kg which may be tricky for those with weaker muscles or the frail when full. We certainly found it heavy with no water inside.
    LID
Of the two models we tested, one had a 'worn out' lid which was not always receptive to being pushed closed. We imagined this was because of constant use in store, however, this would only be a reflection of what's to come at home. The appliance does come with a 24 month warranty however. It would also be nice if the lid could be opened with one hand whilst holding the kettle.
    BUTTONS
The Smeg has a 360 degrees swivel base and the buttons are located on the side of the appliance. When toggling the variable thermometer and switching the kettle on, the appliance moves a little to the left. We tried a number of ways of pushing the button without moving it along the surface, however, it failed. This could be different if there was water inside.
    OVERALL
    3/5
For the price tag and the issues that we encountered we felt on the whole disappointed as we looked forward to having this in our kitchen. For a respectable brand, hopefully they'll iron out these issues and improve them in the next version. For us, we'll be getting a replacement kettle from Kmart for $40.

How do you do a review and haven’t even bought it and actually use it for what it’s for?

I don't think you're supposed to "push" the on button when the kettle is empty. I'm pretty sure the kettle is not going to move when it is full with water :)
Also please use more strength when closing the lid, don't be afraid to touch it :) I'm not a smeg fan but this video is just comical.

I think it's just the display version there as just received ours and none of the issues you had are present! We used a display version at Harvey Norman and it worked so well - again none of those issues!

Lol. There is a way to stop it from moving. Put water in it.
I like the Union Jack toaster they have. Thinking about that one.
I got the Xioami kettle. Goes alright

Great point, will have to do a proper scientific test to confirm. Does your Xioami develop limescale at all? My Kmart one is ace but after about a year the lid looks scaley.

My SMEG is not like that. You just plug it up and put the water in it and turn it on and it gets hot and turns itself off when it reaches the max. temp. Mines is wonderful.

Erm...have you tried filling it with water and then pushing the button? It is unlikely to move when you press it when there is water inside it? When would you ever need to press it when empty??

Wouldn't it not move if it has water in it? and should you move the stuff inside before trying to open and close the lid??

    OMG 😱 it is practical

If the water was fulled in I don't think it will move. I don't see that as a big problem. I have a Russell Hobbs glass kettle it does the same thing with the lid. I guess it has to be firmly closed because of the hot steam.
