    As a professional seamstress, I think you did a great job! Fabric glue for the appliques isn't uncommon and given your time crunch, completely reasonable. As for patterns, everyone's body is different and commercial patterns aren't always great about it. I love your vibes-based drafting, it really worked for all the swooping, organic shapes. Personally, I would recommend making paper versions of stuff like the bodice base. Then you have a template for the next one you make. Pattern's biggest strength are that you can quickly make the same garment again and again. I'm glad you had fun making and wearing such a beautiful and ethereal gown!

      @@your_local_artist The ultimate power move in a vampire/fey rivalry would be the fairy inviting the vampire over to tea. The vampire has natural dominion over anyone who invites them into their home, the fairy has natural dominion over anyone who violates the laws of hospitality, and neither can refuse the appointment without showing weakness so it'd just be a constant headgame of the vampire trying to manoueuvre the fairy into a position where the obligations of hospitality allow the vampire to eat them, and the fairy trying to trick the vampire into doing something that would allow the fairy to declare them a poor guest.
      Next paradox: Fairies have power over those who eat fey food. Vampires have power over those they feed on. Even should the vampire succesfully bite the faerie they're still at square one.

    A tip for the lace appliqués: If it’s polyester (which it usually is), use a heated knife or a wood burning tool to trim around the appliqués. It’s a lot faster and a lot easier than using scissors.

    • @MissTwisteddd
      @MissTwisteddd  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +70

      I might try that next time! Thank you! I've tried a variation before that didn't work so well (went really stringy, I wonder if it wasn't hot enough?) so I want to revisit that technique it'll save me so much time!

    • @patriciahamel5674
      @patriciahamel5674 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

      @MissTwisteddd it depends on the fiber content of the lace, in my experience. Always keep off-cuts for testing out different temperatures before you jump in.

    • @willmfrank
      @willmfrank 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

      It also has the added benefit of sealing the edges so that you don't have to stitch them to prevent fraying.

    • @patriciahamel5674
      @patriciahamel5674 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      @willmfrank most of them tend to be on a netting of some sort and don't really fray, but even then, it still provides much neater, more even edges than scissors. If you do have to use scissors, the best kind to use is little embroidery scissors. You can buy a set pretty cheap, and they have much finer, more precise blades, and the sets usually include one curved pair, which is really helpful.

    As someone who grew up sewing, I really wish I could just go to every cosplayer that gets into this thinking of "illegal sewing," give them a hug, a cup of hot chocolate (with toppings of choice of course), and tell them there's no such thing and that their best is beautiful! I may not be able to share all of my knowledge with young sewists but watching these videos makes me feel obligated to start. It's all a reminder that no matter how little we had at times, I was fortunate to grow up with am amazing Mom who made life magical in so many ways and continues to inspire me to keep coloring outside the lines. Remember friends, it's not "illegal" because it's a theatre or film method to finish a piece or make-do when you're crunched for time or busy. Just have fun!

    So I have been sewing formal wear, historical wear, and cos play dresses for over 34 years now. Unless you are or where trying to do with historical accurately sewing techniques. Cosplay garments are pretty much anything goes as long as it look great and works for you! Using paints, dyes, heck wire sculpting elements onto a bodice to make fabric twisting vines with 3d printed flowers. Overall, I think your end dress turned out amazing and really captured the elements you wanted to achieve. 🎉❤🎉

    I didn't know a loop turner even existed! I usually just take a thicker knitting needle, and push the closed end of the fabric through the entire thing with the knob on the needle, and when it gets to the opening I can pull it through by hand. Not exactly professional either though XD And I'm not exactly doing a lot of sewing either XD
    My respect, it turned out absolutely beautiful!

    I love the hubris in this. Small tips: you corrected yourself from grommet to eyelet, but these ARE grommets. True eyelets are where you sew it like a tiny round button hole. And the awl trick (which is better with a flared or tapered awl) is for if you haven't cut the hole at all.

    • @MissTwisteddd
      @MissTwisteddd  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Yeah I think I was thinking of press studs when I corrected myself incorrectly 😂 I know the awl trick is used without the cutting usually but I wanted to use it since I had holes/grommets too big for just the awl!

    • @alicedeeznuts
      @alicedeeznuts 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The awl trick is also commonly used the way she did it, for a tight woven fabric which you can't get to the required diameter by stretching only. It's still way more stable to only cut a few fibers than to cut the whole thing.

    I only have the most rudimentary sewing skills (I can repair holes in clothes and sew beads to things) but I LOVE seeing the entire creative process with all of the planning, tweaks tests, trials, and spontaneous moments of inspiration. It's just such an art of love and it really makes long videos worth it.

  • @jjmetrejhon1743
    @jjmetrejhon1743 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    This was gorgeous, and it was so amazing to watch everythig come together. The level of skill it takes to bring so many different techniques into a cohesive (and frankly stunning) gown is mind-boggling, and watching you do it all in seven days!? I'm subscribing for sure.
    (Also, i'm sure you know the soldering iron trick for appliques but, just in case: With some fabrics, you can wear a respirator and use a soldering iron to trace an outline around the edges of the beadwork, which will separate them from the fabric without damage and save hours of cissor-cutting time. It...does require being outside or in an incredibly well-ventilated environment though, so perhaps not in such cold weather)

      Steampunk and Goth are really kissing cousins. Each year, it seems more and more so. I used to be the one singled out at steampunk events years ago as the only one wearing black and jewel tones. I was pointed out at lectures as an example of something not sepia tone. But Victorians didn’t wear brown…the tin types were sepia! Anyway, each year, it got more gothy at steampunk cons. I feel now it is more of a 50/50 mix…and even at goth clubs, I will see the typical sepia steampunk. :)

      The bit about basically being glorified tents made me both cry & laugh - our older houses here in NZ are very much the same!!
      Thankfully some recent legal standards around actually having to insulate & weatherproof newer houses are finally going to make homes healthier, drier and less expensive to heat going forward... But anybody who's chronically renting older (ie cheaper) places gets very used to the ankle draughts, unbearably hot summer rooms, huge heating & cooling bills, window condensation & wardrobe mildew... 😵‍💫

    Yes it is a French seam. They last for 20 years or more of regular wear. They are fussy but marvelous. If the pliers are giving you a hard time try a bolt cutter. Alternatively you can cut with the wire cutter half way through and then bend the metal back and forth rapidly till it heats up and then snaps into. I have always used a crochet hook to turn a small strip. That is awesome, unearthly beautiful dress.

    I'm a reeeaaallll beginner at sewing but damn if your videos don't motivate me. Not only to get back to it but to be brave and just have fun with it. The dress and everyone else's costumes were so beautiful. I was genuinely in awe.

    Having seen the photos you posted on instagram, I had to see the process of building such a beautiful piece. The fact that you are learning as well as showing everyone your skills and corner cuts, is absolutely brilliant to watch. Loved every minute of the video and that dress is amazing. Thank you again for your dedication.

    Cosplay is all about learning and having fun! Nobody goes into a cosplay just knowing everything right off the bat. We all have to learn sometime and that’s perfectly fine! I know I’ve learned a few tricks from you, and I don’t even cosplay super complex characters!

    First off, AWESOME job!
    I have very little interest in sewing beyond what I need to in order to do basic repairs and only a vague interest in cosplay, but I find your channel utterly fascinating. You trigger my unquenchable urge toward omniscience.
    Your process strikes me as that of the stereotypical male: forget planning and measuring, full speed ahead,figure it out later, improvise/adapt/overcome!
    Pure Excellence.
